Since Robert Shelton’s New York Times review of Bob Dylan was published almost exactly 63 years ago, on September 29, 1961, Dylan has been the subject of intense critical focus. Journalists, academics, and fans have created an expansive catalog chronicling the minutiae of Dylan’s seven-decades in the public sphere. From studio releases and live performances, through books and films, to personal...
Talkin’ Planet Waves

A Million $ Bash Roundtable The 1974 album Planet Waves marked a series of firsts for Bob Dylan. It was his first official album with The Band. It was his first record not on the Columbia label. And it was, believe it or not, his first No. 1 album. The music represents, if not a return to form, a reset after the release of Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid and the Columbia-compiled revenge album call...

A Million $ Bash Roundtable We are entering a season of maximum hype for the Timothée Chamalet vehicle, James Mangold’s biopic of Bob Dylan, A Complete Unknown. The release date is December 25, 2024, and I, for one, can wait. It’s not that I don’t dearly love movies about Bob Dylan; it’s just that I don’t trust this particular director to create anything but a feel-good yawner complete with lov...
Myth, Memory, and Identity Construction with Court Carney (IOT 06)
Переглядів 43Місяць тому
From the beginning of his career, critics, scholars, and fans have attempted to define Bob Dylan’s identity. Countless interviews and biographies and even Dylan’s 2004 memoir Chronicles: Volume One include myths, half-truths, and obfuscations, leading to lingering questions. These questions are compounded by the public’s perception of him and public images of Dylan used to serve a particular ag...

    I have accidentally erased my original comment (which somebody liked). It went something like this: I enjoyed your video. I especially like what you said about Dylan being American. It seems to me that Dylan's later work is weakened because he sounds like he is trying to be American. I hope that makes sense to you. Thank you.

    I love that song. I remember hearing it and thinking 'what in holy hell is that about'. But I didn't worry too much about it, I remember one guy saying that great songs all have lyrics that 'you can sort of almost understand but not quite'.

    I have a paperback collection of Mr. Kramer's photographs of Bob Dylan from the the 1965 era. It contians Mr. Kramer's recollections of following Dylan during those years when Bob was transitioning from folk singer to full-on electric artist, culminating with the Forest Hills concerts. There are many iconic images and stories in that collection. Mr. Kramer witnessed and documented firsthand some of the most important times in the development of Bob's music, and American popular music in general.

    Kulee Baba was so far ahead of its time - what a fantastic song and recording, or at least what we've heard on YT. Fagen's vocals are next level. The latest versions out there sound like Rick Marotta. Horns have been added, but what a feel. Losing Kulee and The Bear were bigger than the 2nd Arrangement. Just IMO. ua-cam.com/video/iaQY9JesF9I/v-deo.html

    Yeah, that sounds like Gadd instead of Keltner. He's on the beat. Marotta was the right choice with the R&B/funk for Peg, laying back a smidge "character." Great interview! ua-cam.com/video/bWOaSQ-GlRk/v-deo.html

    I think the combination of rather mediocre Dylan songs coupled w the then popular overly reverby sound in the mid 80s makes people skip that period. I for one played Empire Burlesque a lot when it came out. Some of the songs were totally drowned in reverb. Pity, really. And then the Brownsville Girl album was a step backwards.Really awful. The amazing sound of Oh, Mercy put him back on track.

    • @MrBallynally2

    Bob Dylan is a very low-key kind of guy. I remember Leo Kottke telling a story about how he met Bob Dylan once and spoke with him at length and didn't know it was Dylan until years later. I remember another story of Dylan being taken to a police station and placed in a cell. The officer didn't know it was Dylan until one of the other officers recognised him. It's like he doesn't put it out there.

    I cant imagine what dolts would call 84-88 the worst 4 years... Performance wise... They are GREAT YEARS... if you have any sense. . The years with most consistently bad performances is late 89 thru 91... I believe i can feel that he was drinking and in a kind of depression or oppression.... By the time of the '92 concerts.. I hear his heart and mind and spirit CLEARING UP and there's passion and heartfelt expression coming back into the performances.... My first shows were OCT 93 OUTDOOR SHOWS Hollywood Bowl and Blockbuster Pavillion Devore Ca... Santana opening

      @TheFM_Club 6 місяців тому

      Yes. It's a slightly ironic title as explained at length in the first episode of this podcast season - they are the worst of Dylan's career but filled with excellence as we've reviewed in ever episode. Something has to be the worst!

    • @AMEER-114-
      @AMEER-114- 6 місяців тому

      @@TheFM_Club And what did Bob absolutely say was the definitive versions or what in his mind is of most substanitive significance.... The LIVEperformance. Therefore... If we care for his opinion OVER any other opinion... Then... If labeling a certain stretch of years as WORST... We should seek to indentify the period of most lackluster, shoddy, shabby, inconsistent, and non heartfelt performances.... That period is as I stated.... SOMEWHERE around the timeframe of 89 thru 91.. And also... just looking at his countenance during this time... Should make it even more plain and evident that he was just feeling downtrodden...

    • @TheFM_Club
      @TheFM_Club 6 місяців тому

      Yes agree 90-91 was the Live bottom. But the made-up criteria here was 5 least impressive years in a row. Again, just a click-bait title to have some fun with the series that looks at how good it really was.
