Secret to a Straight Bow!!!
In this video, Richard Amoroso of the Philadelphia Orchestra gives a lesson on playing with a straight bow.
The key to a straight bow is first understanding what a straight bow is, and that is playing straight relative to the bridge.
Ultimately, a straight bow will stay in the sounding point of the violin more consistently.

Great 6 min. lesson! 😊
I didn’t know that Alex had been playing with Billy for two years! Squirrel Hunters is a reel. It’s not too common among bluegrass lovers. But it’s a good place to start. Watch Augustin Hadelich play the Orange Blossom Special.
Sir, I have been working on my vibrato for almost five years. This exercise is awesome. Thank you so much.
I needed this Richard. My pinkie doesn’t even come up to my third joint of the ring finger.
That glissando .. bluesy slide sounds great .. my suggestion wb to give it more rhythm within applying string/weak bow pressure .. I’m know classical violinist these days .. just my two cents sense.. lots of luck. And enjoy. And start jamming with some bluegrass country groups ..
I’m new to the violin and having trouble holding the bow and keeping the shoulder rest on. HELP!
This is really fun to watch! I notice that for a lot of classical players coming to bluegrass or old-time fiddle, a challenge is to dial in the appropriate bow pressure. Rather than stepping on the gas and then letting up or even putting on the brake, bluegrass and old-time fiddle bowing is a bit more pedal to the metal (within reason). There might not be quite so many dynamic variations inside a phrase, and the dynamic range is smaller. This makes sense when you think about this fiddle style still being very connected to its roots in dance music.
OMG I LOVE THIS VID NO ONE COULD EXLPAIN THIS SO GOOD LIKE U DID🥹 THANK YOU SOOO MUCHHH🫶🏻🙏
Awesome!! My favorite symphony ever! Enjoy China!
May I ask you some tips of how to avoid the index finger from touching the neck? I found it is a challenge for me to do a seamless vibrato🙏🏻
Looking forward to your upcoming videos!!
Use double sided tape under the thumb to learn how to forget the thumb and stop it gripping. Concentrate on forgetting the thumb .
Thanx! 😊
Bravissimo, mi fa venir voglia di studiare
Great tip! You’re new to my timeline and I like the lessons I’ve seen so far. I’ve noticed what you describe quite a bit, that it’s easier to establish the pinky and stretch down the neck rather than the other way. Working on Mozart’s Rondo ala Turca, for example, there’s a few places where it’s a better setup to stretch down to play the progression between a few notes on two strings than to move your frame back and forth to multiple positions in order to play on the same string. Anchoring the pinky and stretching down the 1st finger as you need to allows you to keep your frame in 1st position the entire time.
Thank you for the for all of these short lessons! I really appreciate your expertise as I am always searching for new methods to practice and improve my playing. I have heard similar advice on balancing the hand toward the 3rd and 4th fingers before, but it is always interesting and insightful to hear how every violinist explains it slightly differently.
Great talk. As a musician I love to strive for that perfect sound. Much more a goal than intonation to me!
The colors grey, green, and gold refer to: the Tonic diminished, Subdominant diminished, and Dominant diminished scales.
Interesting. As a player of the Flesch scale system I always categorized these with arpeggios rather than scales, but an important thing to practice in any case. Something I found to be helpful, and that I instruct my students to listen for, is to be comfortable with the feeling of the tension between each note. Since the entire point of the diminished 7 chord is to lead us to a more consonant chord, there is constant tension from note to note that pulls on the ear and can make us play out of tune. It is important to practice these because it gives us a chance to engage with that tonal tension, WITHOUT giving into it. Great lesson! I greatly enjoy your content!
Thank you so much for that insight and thanks for watching!
Mr Amoroso, thank you so very much for this wonderful video, as well as the others! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 They are so helpful! Best wishes from Southamerica
You're so welcome
Incredible playing, man!! The fact that you can play it this fast is truly impressive 😮
Congratulations on reaching 1k subs!!
Thank you!!!!
this is an incentive for me to get back to playing. I want to make a beautiful sound. Thank you.
Cultivating a beautiful sound is such a great endeavor
I just needed this! Thank you so much!!
So happy to help!

What kind of chin rest are you using?
It’s part of the type of violin he has
thank you for this insight. it took me a while to get the timing right where the finger of the left hand must be in position before bowing. but I'd like to practice what you just showed. is there a way to download Kreutzer 6 from the web?
IMSLP
GREAT! Thanx! 😂
You know what else builds muscle memory AND the necessary muscle? Actually playing. Also the fuck is he talking about "correct posture" while holding a pencil like a flute?
I won a job with the Phil. Orch doing this. Thanks for your dissent.
Excellent video, Rich! So glad you mentioned the "true" length of the string being used! Visually imagining the string length from the true b-natural in high positions helps encourage to get that bow closer to the bridge and move at a good speed.
So helpful!! Excellent presentation! Thank You for this!
Very equal movement up and down of the finger, fluctuation should be very equal the same in singing,it is the secret of quality of vibrato.
Totally agree!
You say the ideal speed is sixteenth notes at 150 bpm. But what you play is two oscillations per beat at 150. Would this not be eighth notes, not sixteenth?
the movement of the wrist would oscillate upwards in eights notes, but there's also a downward oscillation. So if you take that into consideration, it would be sixteenths. I may do a YT short and explain further.
Great video.
Thank you!
Such a blessing to share such beauty... I am so thankful for you.
thank you, that was great. i have been wondering how to do ricochet bowing for decades.
Muchas explicaciones y poca práctica
HELLO INSTURCTOR MR.RICHARD
Well explained.Thanks
You're so welcome
I started learning the violin in my 60s, taking private lessons. I am on Suzuki book 7, and still cannot get the grasp of vibrato, and I cannot figure what is wrong.
dou you have a teacher?
@@JustFiddler Yes. Private. Everything went so well up until vibrato.
Yes, a teacher would be very helpful!
@@richardamoroso_violin I have had a teacher for 7 years, and still cannot grasp vibrato!
For me when I'm looking at the motion of the fingers at 1:07, that is just not possible for my hand. My fingers can't seem to make that motion. Is that the same for you?
This is so helpful. I've watched lots of videos but this is the only one that really shows how the knocking motion looks on the violin. As a beginner I couldn't make the connection. Thanks!
Thanks so much! I'm glad that this was helpful.
Leaning into the First Finger... first thing I'll do tomorrow. I did kind of turning my arm inside to get more pressure on the Tip on down bow. With the leaning motion it should sound much better. Thank you so much, this is very helpful to me 🤗
Excellent presentation! A concise, logical, methodological approach!! Thank You so much for this! Subbed and Liked!
Thank you for your kind word and the sub!
Great tips. I like the short review at the end of your lesson too. So helpful!
So happy to help!👍
Dude, you changed my life forever! I watched many lengthy videos on this topic when all I needed was 3 minutes with you. Thank you!
great review! now the next step (for me) would be discussing how to achieve a wide vibrato vs narrow vibrato :)
My latest video on vibrato talks a bit about it, but I may do another with deeper analysis. ua-cam.com/video/i4naaEolHA4/v-deo.html
Very useful!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for your guidance and sharing your knowledge and experience.
Excellent Richard Thank you for your valuable information ❤❤
