The Otter Messer Bergmann; German Elegance.
Salutations, Ladies and Gentlemen! Today, I’ll be discussing a beautiful piece of cutlery by Otter Messer; the Bergmann.
As many of you may know, I absolutely adore Otter as a firm. Their dedication to tradition and commitment to quality has gained my interest and respect over the years-despite some of their knives being less than perfect. This particular knife is one that may appear familiar to some of my long-time viewers, as I had discussed its predecessor back in 2022; the Webermesser.
The #180 Webermesser pattern is one of Otter’s oldest models. It originally found favour in ribbon weaving mills due to its textile, pointed, Wharncliffe blade. The pattern is a simple one-featuring little more than a carbon steel blade mounted on a steel frame and sporting a wooden (Sapele) handle.
The Bergmann, however, offers a considerably finer set of materials-all of which are inspired by the mining industry of the Bergisches land. Its dark, Ebony wood handle pays homage to the heavy coal mining business of the Ruhr region. The copper pins and copper accents in the carbon-fibre bolsters reference the lines of copper that can be found in coal seams. Even the name of this knife invokes its inspiration-as ‘Bergmann’ means ‘miner’ in Deutsch.
When I received the original Webermesser, I was somewhat disappointed, as the blade featured a substantial warp to one side. This led to me hardly carrying the knife, despite greatly liking the pattern-which is of course, due to my affinity for Wharncliffe Swaybacks or ‘Tackler’ knives. The Bergmann absolutely filled the void that was my disappointment regarding the Webermesser, as I can now proudly showcase an Otter #180 and declare it to be of outstanding quality! Where the Weaver’s Knife failed in terms of fit and finish, the Bergmann certainly succeeded. The craftsmanship on this piece is exemplary-especially when considering Otter’s lack of large-scale, factory CNC machinery.
Otter Bergmann:
-C75 carbon steel Wharncliffe blade.
-Features a half-stop.
-Ebony wood handles.
-Fat carbon-fibre + copper bolsters.
-Copper pins.
-Steel liners and backspring.
-7/10 pull weight.
-Lanyard hole included.
-Handmade in Solingen, Germany.
Overall, the Bergmann is an immensely elegant and classy version of what is a fairly simple knife. The higher-end materials invoke a degree of refinement that the original Webermesser simply did not hold. The Bergmann-despite being a new release for 2024, has already won an award for second place in the IWA Outdoor Classics. Its particular realm of victory is that of the ‘Classics’ category. It is no surprise to me that such a design-old as it may be, is still respected and praised, today. The Bergmann is an example of what Otter Messer is capable of at their best and I am very confident in recommending it!

Salutations, Ladies and Gentlemen! Today, I’ll be discussing a classic, working knife from France-the Pradel. The Pradel is a very interesting pattern. Unlike many French knives, the Pradel is not named after a city-but rather, Etienne Pradel, the man who designed the knife in 1867. It was inspired by Sheffield spearpoint knives, which were quite common at the time. Hence its original name-the ...

      There is a UA-cam video on the topic of the pronunciation of the word. It gives the original pronunciation as "Wen-guh" and English iterations as "Wendgie" or "Wen-gay" - or occasionally as you have it "Wendj". ('My transliterations ;) So by the argument presented you're not wrong, you just employ the lesser used of three options. I am somewhat reminded of the Solingen vs Solinjun pronunciation issue ;D

    Always like no nonsense traditional patterns but the bolsters not to my taste, I don't think German knife making ever dipped in quality to much unlike British made knives, thankfully in recent years a lot of improvement has been made, one big thing going for Otter is they are available unlike GEC and I won't pay stupid prices once they are on the secondary market, was wondering where you had got to not seen a video for some time glad to see you are well and regards to Alice. 😁😸

      Hello, Lewis! I agree that Otter is a great option for those who wish to avoid the hassle and expense of finding a GEC. Plus, Otter's quality is getting better with each new knife I acquire, so I can safely say that in terms of fit and finish, you should expect a piece of decent craftsmanship. Apologies, again for the lack of uploads. I'd been going through a bit of a trough, as of late, but I believe I have passed it. Here's hoping I can return to a more usual schedule and actually stick to it! Cheers and Alice says hi! 🐈‍⬛

Alas, their lack of communication has led me to believe that they have not put forth any efforts to correct what is a very real flaw in their backsprings. And until I see anything that suggests otherwise, I'll be buying Taylor's Eye Witness and Otter Messer from now on. Not that I mind, however, as both brands produce exemplary knives! Cheers!

    I found this video really interesting for different reasons. 1. The knife. I have looked on May's site a lot over the past couple of months. I dont have many pocket knives but recently i have zoned my interest into traditional only knives. I have until now never liked this handle shape much at all. But almost as quick as a click of the fingers I have it on the list to buy. Ive started to appreciate the trade more and respect for the cutler and with that has come a desire to have different patterns instead of varieties of barlow, barlow, barlow. Earlier today i order my first M.May knife. Barlow ebony, turquoise, filed. Im looking forward to it. I also like the clayton spearpoint. But again, at first, I also didnt like it! Its quite rare to like something and also not like it at the same time....nuts but I experienced that with that knife. 2. Interesting to hear you speak about the fit and finish. You're right, people seem obsessed with it. These are hand made and so will not normally be perfect. My first A Wright was a stag lambsfoot. Zero gaps! Perfect centering until I saw the blade was bent about 2 thirds of the way down to the tip! I contacted and they apologised and offered a replacement but i ended up keeping it as i didnt intend it to be a big using knife. The stag handles are very even and it is beautiful. But it would be impossible to sharpen on a stone so in my eyes its unacceptable to pass for sale. Gaps used to bug me but not anymore. My latest A Wright is my weekend carry, Clip barlow oak barrel handle, lovely grain, knife is getting used everyday at home for food prep too. Gaps are off the charts! On the blade side, between BOTH liners and their oak handles there is about a half mm gap all the way to the bolsters. Pretty spot on on the spring side. When i first saw this I was really disappointed, but then I thought about it, they are hand made. Are these gaps actually going to be a problem for the usage of the knife? I like them because they are handmade. I will be happy to see them looking used. It all adds character. Now to me, the imperfections of fit and finish in a hand made knife just adds character and history. It also makes them unique. The bend in the blade preventing sharpening is not acceptable, nor any other imprefection that prevents use or maintenance, but visual imperfections are fine, good even. Thanks for the review and i was ready to comment saying you havent even said if it is comfortable and ergonomic and then you began to!

    • @TheKnifeRaven
      @TheKnifeRaven 9 годин тому

      First of all, thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely comment! I always appreciate it when my videos stoke enough interest to warrant a longer comment. Moving to your first point; the pattern itself. The Ergonomic was a piece that I was originally sceptical about, until I watched a couple videos that discussed the design. Afterwards, I was confident that despite its admittedly odd and perhaps even "off-putting" shape, it would be quite the comfortable knife. When I received it, I was no less than impressed by the pattern and would absolutely recommend it. While somewhat peculiar in design, the Ergonomic's execution absolutely lives up to its name. Regarding Michael's other knives-that Barlow you speak of is quite the fine piece. I enjoy the look and feel of Ebony, although I'm not thoroughly convinced that I like the Turquoise. I recall once upon a time, Michael used to make a knife with an Amber collar-something that originally brought him to my attention and interest. I can much sympathise with your feelings regarding the Clayton Spearpoint. On one hand I think I'd love it, but on the other, I'm unsure as to whether or not I'd find the handle uncomfortable! 'Tis a shame that there are no current reviews on the pattern... As for fit and finish, I believe it all boils down to personal preference. Granted, there are some flaws that one simply cannot ignore-such as a faulty backspring or a warped blade. Other, minor, cosmetic flaws, however, can be completely disregarded by some, while infuriating another. Again, it all comes down to the individual owner of the knife and what they are willing to consider 'character' versus 'flaw'. Personally, I can accept certain imperfections such as bits of gapping or unevenness, but flaws that actually affect the performance of the knife (such as the warp you described) deeply bother me. That's just my way of looking at it. While I'd always prefer my knives to be gap-free, it's not the end of the world if a knife features a little here and there. In my eyes, at least. Again, thank you very much for taking the time to comment. I very much appreciate it! 😊 Cheers!

      Salutations! Unfortunately, the only retailer that I was aware of which stocked this model has since sold out. I purchased the Executive back in 2021, whilst it was still available at my local House of Knives. Currently, Victorinox's website has no purchasing options and none of the retailers I usually buy from appear to have the Executive at the moment. I wish I could offer a greater degree of help, but given the fact that this model has been discontinued, it will likely be very difficult to find one now, considering the demand due to scarcity. My best suggestion is to keep an eye on the secondary market-perhaps turning to a place such as the 'All About Pocket Knives' forum. www.allaboutpocketknives.com// Again, apologies for not being able to direct you to an exact dealer. In my experience, the Executive has almost completely vanished from sale in most places-so by all means, best of luck in your search! Cheers!

    Nice to have you back,, I too have been on a bit of a hiatus, due to moving house, ! Also, due to the new house and lots of hard work, I decided last week to reward myself with a new hard use large knife,, I've been a Spyderco fan for many years, so I've gone for the Police model, sprint run, in Micro Melt PD1 steel, it's about as large a pocket knife, as you can get,, Anyway, it's absolutely fantastic, and I'm a very happy bunny,,, It's a shame I'm risking a lot, if I carry it in public,, All the best from across the pond,, Cheers,, John...

      Happy to *be* back! Thankfully, my hiatus was just built upon my own inability to upload anything! Regardless, I hope the move went well-I can't imagine that being a pleasant experience! The Police is quite the imposing knife. I once met a fellow at a gun show who was selling knives. We got to talking and he showed me his carry-knife: an all-steel Spyderco Police. Needless to say, I was impressed. I wasn't aware the Police had a Sprint Run variation, so I'll have to give that a look! It's truly unfortunate that a massive amount of law-abiding citizens are punished for the actions of a small minority of troublemakers. Perhaps it is different in the UK, but here in Canada, this is the norm for making laws regarding knives and such... Thanks again for stopping by, my friend! Cheers, as always!

    I know the carbon steel is probably better technically. However, I have the all stainless version, and whatever they used for the blade is superb at being stainless. 3 years on mine, and the whole knife doesn't have any spots, or rust on it. I've had it out in the rain, cut limes for drinks, and used it at work. The only differences now from when it was new are, the lock tab and spring inside turned dark grey, the keyring is worn pretty thin, and the knife has fine scratches and polishing all over it. No rust, no loose rivets, no bends or chips and still takes an edge. Just clean it with hot soapy water, and occasionally some cotton with rubbing alcohol to get the gunk out, and wipe it with cooking oil. After that, this knife would probably survive at the bottom of the ocean.

    • @TheKnifeRaven
      @TheKnifeRaven 20 днів тому

      I prefer carbon steel, simply due to its rustic appeal. I've found that the claim of "carbon steel is easier to sharpen than stainless steel" is really dependent on how well the steel is tempered. A properly heat-treated stainless steel will almost always be better than a poorly tempered carbon steel. Among Otter's knives, I mostly have carbon blades, so I'm not in a position to make a comparison, as I haven't needed to sharpen the stainless models all that much. Regardless, I'm glad to hear that the all-steel model has been serving you well. It sounds like the perfect example of 'beauty in simplicity'. Cheers!

      @@TheKnifeRaven So I went to Böker and Otter (Hartkopf and Klaas next time). Böker has a large modern building with a fancy shop and an entire office complex nearby. Otter, on the other hand, is a small company with a very unassuming main building. They are situated close to Böker in a street called "Schwertstraße" ("Sword Street", Solingen used to produce bladed weapons for the military) with a variety of metalworking companies. I was the only customer at the time and the lady in the office showed me around. They have a little showroom with their products - they produce the all-metal Mercator knives and a variety of beautiful traditional pocket knives. They also have a variety of fixed blades, mostly traditional hunting type, and a beatiful sailor's knife. I spent more money at Otter than at Böker - the former has a special charm and the Mercator is a classic. - It is apparent that Germany is undergoing a process of de-industrialisation, combined with mass immigration and you can see that in Solingen. It is somewhat depressing to think that traditional companies with a century and more of culture will struggle to stay in business. Böker has outsourced parts of their production to China; their Chinese pocket knives - the Atlas and Atlas Backlock, for instance - are very affordable, made of superior metals (12C27N and D2 steel), and with expert computerised precision, as compared to Otter's traditional pocket knives, which are much more expensive, rough around the edges, and made of simple 4034 or C75. But I've come to really appreciate Otter for its traditional craftsmanship. I hope they will tay in business forever and I will send them all my $!

    • @TheKnifeRaven
      @TheKnifeRaven 18 днів тому

      @@ewaldseiland8558 Wow! What an experience that must have been! I recall Böker having a larger factory than Otter but I can imagine the contrast between the two being like night and day. To me, Böker has always been the Solingen knife 'company', whilst Otter is Solingen's knife 'workshop'. One is advanced, mechanised and worldwide-the other is traditional, handcrafted and local. I've always held a greater appreciation for a 'perfect' Otter knife than a 'perfect' Böker, simply due to Otter's lack of fancy machinery in comparison. Naturally, I'm speaking from assumptions and vague knowledge of both firms, which is why I'd love to visit Solingen someday and get to witness the makers, firsthand. Thank you again for sharing your experience, I greatly appreciate the insight into Solingen's knifemakers. Cheers!

    Until the penny dropped, it used to confuse the hell out of me that there was a Pradel pattern and a Pradel knife manufacturer. I think that handle is called a coffin handle. It looks like it's been constructed with typical French 'joie de vivre', and to be honest you could find similar on the Taylor's basic Barlow at one time, if not still, which I can't help but compare it to. Like the Taylor's, it also looks like it will last a lifetime. It's funny, but since collecting French knives myself, I've also stopped letting knives snap shut.

    • @TheKnifeRaven

      A 'coffin handle' is actually a very accurate term to describe the Pradel's shape. I certainly appreciate the construction for the cost. It's far from perfect, but I can't really fault it as a work knife. Oh, and yes, Taylor's basic Barlows features the same tang style. Cheers, as always!
