You got to tell your story, boy before it's time to go- Neil Young
I played piano at an early age and knew the spirit that music evoked but didn't hear the calling until
I was 15. Stumbled through guitar with every style of learning I could. My appetite stretched through Electric to Acoustic to Classical. Rock to Country Blues to Jazz to Soul to Gypsy to Bluegrass to World Music to Gospel to Punk to Reggae to Electronica to Fusion to World. Academically I jumped from Music Performance to Audio Engineering to Guitar Repair and Construction.
As you might imagine I am no Master and would never claim to be anything but a student for life.
I've never made much money from any of my endeavors and don't plan to start now.
I want their to be a space for musicians and listeners alike to hear and discuss what moves them. Music can be an intense solitary experience and simultaneously at its core is a communication of its parts. A call and response.
Music appreciation and testimony.

good stuff, nice to see an unusual album of theirs reviewed. you can see the track johnny the fox in there.
All the same with rock bands.. young guys writing great songs take years to develop unless you just got the gift take a look at Bad Finger first album countless others..
Your intro really is discordant noise, not rock or jazz or even music. It sucks. You can do better. Create yourself an original hook.
Honesty is no excuse is arguably one of their greatest songs
I appreciate you listening along. It singlehandedly made me discover their future discography further. The mellotron doesn't hurt!
@@SubterraneanVisions Think it was played by a relative of one of the Cocteau twins
You might like Ed Palermo doing Zappa's Aybe Sea. Mike Keneally on guitar. ua-cam.com/video/QkPTgwK9Cz4/v-deo.html
I like what the band is doing generally but the solo much like Zappa's solos can be repetitive because they drag out too long. Like a lot of guitar players they don't know how to shut off the valve. Example Muffin Man or Willie The Pimp
Boring. Just do a Zappa album. That's all that is needed.
What do you think is the best Zappa solo/album?
I had a cd copy of the Zabriskie Point soundtrack years ago. I don't think it was Pink Floyd's best work but it definitely captured a lot of interesting things that they were trying on before they got into their best 70's epic stuff.
@@honuman39 That's true while not sure the Wall is entirely as listenable as some of their Pre-Dark Side more pastoral tracks from Soundtracks to Meddle, Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. But I get your point.
@@SubterraneanVisions I can agree with that. I really like the wall but it's relentlessly bleak.
Interesting 😎 read. I will listen to that tune. Don't think I have heard it yet, though may have as he has so many. I picked this tune while I also thought about moppin the bride or Danse norvegienne as they were on the cassette tape I initially found by him. I do hear him hesitate a bit here for note choice which is not like him but the solo is still of course quite striking and beautiful. I agree I like the clarity of this amplified sound over the muffled jazz tone later adopted by some. Whereas on the acoustic unamplified gypsy sound it's cuts the mid and bass tones. His later period was not a downgrade compositionally by any means nor his playing. But I am not sure if he had always played amplified if we would not be losing something. Of course we might need to sit and listen to some to formulate my thoughts better. 😊 Appreciate the view and communication!
Funny thing is the pickups and amps Django used sound incredible. And are easy to replicate today and still sound great. Many Gypsy jazzers today use that tone with a Selmer style guitar or a Gibson. The blues masters would take the torch on harsh tones then distortion blossomed of course. And many guitarists would hear that tone for the first time from blues, but that was much later than the 40s when Django was doing it. I prefer Django’s tone here to the overly sweet jazz guitar tone that Christian used and became standard. Too mellow I would recommend you listen to Songe D’autome - both takes. Djangos tone sounds perfect for what he’s playing. Cuts like a knife. But really all the electric recordings are very fine work, def not a downgrade from his acoustic stuff. The maestro doesn’t miss, that’s for sure. Seems random that you were drawn to this recording specifically, tho it is an interesting tune. His solo is a bit hesitant tho. Most of the rest of these recordings he’s totally confident haha.
I enjoyed both of these. First time I've heard Steve Morse.
Grateful to hear you enjoyed them. Hope this was a good first listen for Steve Morse, he has been around a while with more than a few notable bands, Kansas, Dixie Dregs etc. I don't gravitate to everything he did but, he is interesting and can be captivating. I did peruse your channel, as you said there are so many artists to dig into. Fenton Robinson is a favorite as well as Johnny Young when I heard some mandolin blues, so unique.
Steve Morse! I saw the Dregs on the What if tour. I've been fortunate enough to have seen them 11 times, including their last reunion tour. And, met the original keyboardist David Davidowski in Marshall, NC 2 years ago as he was playing piano one afternoon in a coffee shop. Unfortunately, Marshall was destroyed by flooding caused by hurricane Helene.
Wow, you are a real fan of the Dregs! I met Frank Brittingham playing guitar at a restaurant gig. After talking to him I found out he played with Steve Morse at a very early period before Dixie Grit and the Dregs. I also lived in Asheville, NC from 2015-2020. Loved him from Kansas as well but haven't gone as deep listening as I should perhaps. Thanks for the memory!
Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society album EYE ON YOU is definitely worth hearing. The other guitarist is Bern Nix. (I liked one side better than the other, but it's been more than a decade since I heard it.)
To me, I wouldn't have even mentioned Vernon Reid. I love the blues, Earl Hooker, Jody Williams, Hubert Sumlin, Jimmie Lee Robinson, Jimmy Rogers, Robert Lockwood... too many to name them all. I also love the older styles of Big Bill Broonzy, Lonnie Johnson, Tampa Red, and Robert Nighthawk (taking his voice into account, he's my favorite musician). And Kenny Burrell. BLUE BASH with Jimmy Smith is probably my favorite.
Thanks I will check it out, appreciate the comment!
@@DonDeeringI hear you, Vernon Reid solo was a bit of a wildcard compared to the other players in a way. I almost did a blues as I realized I wasn't finding one that was clearly somehow the greatest. I have loved and listened to so much country blues ala Rev. Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Brownie Mcghee. Alvin Youngblood Hart being my favorite modern interpreter. Also though about jazz blues as well ala Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, and Wes with Jimmy Smith, "Mellow Mood". But I did include one coming up. Country blues was hard because it's all great but mostly solo so I didn't include any solo pieces. Maybe later I'll do a solo piece Top Ten. thanks for your thoughts, nice to get a sense of it.
@SubterraneanVisions I'll select a few things from Earl Hooker and a couple others. I should have mentioned... a lot of people, but T-Bone Walker for sure, he's the North Star.
10cc - Feel The Benefit, Babe Ruth - King Kong.
Thanks for the recommendation. Never heard those, Babe Ruth was strong playing and 10cc was amazing singing and keyboards. Guitar solos were both similar blues rock, liked them a lot!
Sound of silence...
@@DobraVibra Good ear, that is the Hand of Fripp reaching out and casting all who play their music into exile. Alas if you tap the link in the description you shall be transported into the sublime chaos that is the cogs of King Crimson in Full HD audio bliss.😁
Thanks for playing these tunes. O.V. Wright was one of the great soul singers that sadly never really got the fame he deserved. He had a lot of great minor hits like "You're Going to Make Me Cry", "Nickel and a Nail", "That's How Strong My Love is" etc. , but he never had a huge chart busting hit.
Thank You, I will take a listen to some of his other tunes and potentially include in a medley of Soul gems in a future episode. He definitely has a place there.
One of my favourites. It has so much drama. An early masterpiece.
IMHO Vashti Bunyan "Just Another Diamond Day" is the most underrated album ever released. It captures such an air of whimsical, upbeat optimism. Thanks for reviewing!
I have to agree, hearing it 50+ years later, its' sublime clarity really hit me like a lightning bolt.
👍
A fabulous track from a fabulous album.
I agree, thinking about making it a full album listen. With the bonus tracks.
Subterranean Visions, great content you deserve more subscribers
Highly appreciated, I just started so slow and steady will be ok. You are my 2nd overall comment so it means alot to receive any feedback.
This is in the middle of whole lotta love in Long Beach 1975, it was different every night
It been awhile since I had The "How Many More Times" Record Set. So it goes back into Whole Lotta Love or right into Black Dog>?
@@SubterraneanVisions right into black dog
The big difference between the two bands, Led Zeppelin had full control over their music. Page not only founded the band, he produced & mixed everything, having full control was unheard of at that time. They released very few singles, some of their greatest songs aren’t as well known as others. They also weren’t a band together for long, before they fit it big, it was all within about 6 months. Page had about 2 weeks to find 3 band members to finish 6 gigs in Scandinavia, from a Yardbirds contract. The bands first rehearsal was on August 19,1968, on September 7th they started that tour. They came back to England & late September early October, in 4 days & total of about 35 hours, produced recorded mixed etc their first album. Their manager Peter Grant too the tapes to New York, & the band signed with Atlantic Records on November 11,1968. Atlantic Records heads didn’t even hear them live, & a signing bonus of $104,000, which was the largest at that time. On December 26, (68) they did a tour in the USA, & their debut album wasn’t released in the US until January 12,1969. It was released in March (1969) elsewhere, they then exploded into fame & the greatest band ever.
@@sicotshit7068Very concise background! I used to have a lp Labeled as The New Yardbirds which they still called themselves in the interim 6 months I assume. 10 Years Gone is probably my favorite. Check out my new episodes in the next week as I am going to do a listen to a live version of the The Crunge from Long Beach 1975. Thanks!!
@@SubterraneanVisions I will. I’ve listened & watched all the interviews, all are so interesting, plus other documentaries, everything about them amazing.
I've been a Bowie fan since the early 70's and this song is still one of my absolute favourites. A lyrical masterpiece. Cygnet Committee, Sweet Thing/Candidate /Sweet Thing (Reprise), and Station To Station...all 9 minutes+ and all phenomenal tracks!
Yes, Sweet Thing, Candidate and Reprise took time to grow on me as it was much darker tone than previously albums. But once it grabbed hold it became infused in me. Haven't gone too much past Diamond Dogs other than dipping a toe in. Thanks for your thoughts!
Too bad there is no translation to understand you. Nevertheless I encourage you to discover more of this great guitarist and musician whether with brainbox, focus or solo career.
what language do you speak?
@SubterraneanVisions I meant that there are no subtitles available to do the translation. I speak French.
