Flamenco Drummers - Pancho Brañas
Spain
Приєднався 23 лип 2021
Playing Flamenco with the drums is one of the best things that have happened to me in my life, because I have improved a lot as a drummer thanks to it and because I have enjoyed playing in this style more than in any other. Flamenco is freedom, honesty, creativity, intuition, naturalness, personality, beauty, sensitivity and all these virtues are what I want for my life. I have been playing flamenco with drums for more than 25 years and a few years ago I decided to share my experience with many drummers. If you want to be one of them, this is your channel and in it you will find a lot of content to learn how to learn to play in this style with real drums, clearly and following the really appropriate steps.
FARRUQUITO "Zapateado"
When I discovered this incredible performance by Farruquito "Zapateado", in the film "Flamenco Flamenco" by the great Carlos Saura, I fell in love with it and I promised myself that I would be able to add drums to this work that was done with percussions. After a lot of study I managed to learn it and my dear friend Quisco López helped me by making this wonderful video.
And it is just one more example from a didactic point of view of how much the drums can contribute to the world of Flamenco. With all my respect, humility and love towards Carlos Saura, Farruquito and all the artists who participate in this work of art.
In this link you can see the original performance, without drums.

In this cover you can see how Seguiriyas are being played now, mixing modern concepts with the spirit of Traditional Seguiriyas. Enjoying the art of this great artist Pablo Rubén Maldonado with whom I have the honor of playing for many years. A flamenco piano genius. I highly recommend his entire discography!!!! I wonder why the the 11th and 12th beats are counted as "one" and "two". I've heard other people count them as "11" and "12". I'm guessing that it's because the word "11" has two syllables where is all the others have just one each and that makes it more complicated rhythmically to say it that way? Technically calling a beat in a 12 beat pattern a different name than it's actual numerical location can be very confusing and probably arose from people with a more musicological or 'western' approach trying to learn a very traditional "never counted" approach, perhaps the musicologist said to the Flamenco musician, oh there are 12 beats, please count it for me, having never counted before and not understanding the western ways of counting it could quite easily be a misinterpretation where the 12th beat is counted as beat one although beat one is still on beat one a person unfamiliar with this Western system could simply think 12 is the important number because that's the one you have to count up to. So be careful.... cultural clashes like this are very common, I've been at this for many decades and people who like me have been dedicated to it are still learning new things about how to be more true to the traditions rather than distorting them through misinterpretations and miscommunications.
Me ha encantado la síncopa del tercer compás!!! Magnífico Pancho sigues dándonos sorpresas
Muchas gracias Pedro!
Ésta me gusta mucho para un mix que hago del barrio en la orquesta!!

What is the definition of Flamenco drumming as opposed to say Jazz drumming?
The main differences are the type of base rhythms and the way of developing the rhythm, because the musical concept is different.
@@flamencodrummers-panchobra6020 Are you the drummer in the video? As a professional drummer and teacher I never heard of this style called Flamenco drumming so therefore I'm interested. First I should ask what is the time signature here if any? I was hearing a combination of 6 and 7 but I realize some forms of music does not use time signatures like music from India where they use syllables.
Yes Steve, I am the drummer. Playing flamenco on the drums is something quite recent and there are not many drummers who do it. Flamenco gives you great rhythmic skills, it is wonderful to play the drums in this style and also difficult if I'm honest. The flamenco rhythm of this video is called seguiriyas and the key is like this: 1 & 2 & 3 & & 4 & & 5 &
@ I'm still hearing a measure of 7 followed by a measure of 5 (I said 7 and 6 before but I meant 7 and 5) so I think we each have a different way of counting. If you add all the characters you wrote ( 1 & 2 & 3 & & 4 & & 5 &) they add up to 12 and so maybe it could be in 12/8 in Western music notation but also 7/8 plus 5/8 would be also 12/8 so I don't know if it is coincidental or not (did you write & two extra times?) if you purposely wrote two &s after 3 and after 4 then maybe it is not a coincidence that we both come out with 12 counts total.
@@spercoco Yes, you also can consider the rhythm as a 7/8 plus 5/8, but the most important thing is knoowing flamenco language.
Está buenísimo. Muchas gracias!
Muchas gracias Vicente ‼️
Magnífico 🙏
Muchas gracias ‼️
Thank you, very nice video, thinking of buying your book...playing drums and percussion professionally for more than 20 years now, but never got into flamenco.
I studied Medicine in " Sevilla (Spain) and i am sure you refer to "SEGUIDILLAS" (not as you call it it). Lovely video, muchas gracias from Manila/Philippines
Yes Tom, both names are good. Web, flamenco people used to call It Seguiriyas. Thank you.
Thanks to you ‼️
Beautiful playing .. Your drums sound fabulous too .. Muchas gracias hermano 🙏

Sublime! buen trabajo!

Gracias Daniel ‼️
Muy bueno sí señor. En mi opinión yo hubiese suprimido la ventana donde aparece la actuación y en su lugar meter una donde se viese el pie del bombo, para poder apreciar el juego bombo/ caja. Por lo demás enhorabuena.
you rock! thank you for the lessons
Thank You Very much‼️
Increíble!!! Eres un máquina

Thank you Phil‼️
Just found your channel today. I really Love it. Un Abrazo.
Thank you Al, very happy to hear that ‼️
Im now living in spain and have only began to realise the richness of this spanish associated style. Before i had only thought it was guitar, vocals, singers and perhaps some percussion, ofcourse hand claps(palmas) also. This channel though is an eye opener. Practice begins now, wish me luck
Eye opener for the drumset application, forgot to mention
To add, my favourite moment is towards the end where the beat is voiced over the ride cymbal and snare drum. Very nice sound and feel demonstrated there
Thank you Brian ‼️
Clean yet punchy! Musical and appropriate! Precise and inspired. Put simply, I love it❤
Wow, sharp and punchy! Clean and precise! Musical and appropriate! I love it quite simply❤
Thank you Brian, very happy to hear that ‼️
Ps, I've subscribed now. Will check out everything
🥰
Thank you Brian ‼️
A warm idea as inspired by this brilliant man: play paradiddle patterns to the groupings of this beat while accenting the accents of the original beat on the bass drum and keeping a whole note pulse on the left foot. The paradiddle pattern will be this: R l r r, L r l l, R l r r l l, R l r r l l, R l r r. Repeated again now but with left hand lead to start. A warm up idea , not a musical one just to note. Anyone like it? Inspired by the drummer in this video btw, thanks for the inspiration
Thank you very much Brian ‼️

Love it! 👍
Thank you!!
Sir if i may ask, what's the reason to combine every variation? I find it in some degrees blurring each other, make the clapping sounds like ordinary 4/4 beats. Unlike before the combination, the actions are more firm
Yes of course. The reason to combine every variation is to create rhythm with a lot of energy, which is very tipical of Flamenco. It looks like 4/4 but really it is a 3/4 time. This is the mysterious of Flamenco music also. All the best!!
Oleeee
Muchas gracias ‼️
