I’m 42 and currently work as an engineering manager at a cyber security company. Make roughly 200k a year. But I’m not as content as I used to be. I’m also a freediver and scuba diver. I’m the happiest in the water. Been seriously considering a career change into commercial diving. I’m touring CDIs Arizona campus in January as there’s no classes in December. Haven’t made a decision yet. But seriously considering it.

Median price in the USA is $19.03, maximum is $36. I almost went this route but the numbers didn't seem correct, everyone talked BIG, but then when I saw government statistics I realised I'm being fed BS.

The people who are successful are the ones who learn the business and reap the rewards from a warm cottage lying next to a hot chick, while some cowboy is freezing his ass off underwater for his company, who's only reward for his efforts is bragging at the bar and a life cut short by some half witted tender. I've been doing this for 43 years. So don't try it.....😅😅😅

Couple of tips for new divers/people thinking about getting into it: 1)Despite slowly overcoming the wage stagnation that hit the US diving industry hard, still expect to make a bit on the low side for entry level tenders. Almost every single tender position will come with a nice raise after 90 days though. Reason being is so many people finish dive school the. decide they don’t like the work and quit so a lot of companies have a probationary period for new graduates/entry level jobs. 2) For people working in US, Washington and Alaska have some of the best rates. Getting your DCBC certification (Canadian certs) opens up even more work. Canada basically hands out work visas to commercial divers, and it’s relatively inexpensive for Canadian companies to sponsor your employment or for US companies to do business in Canada. 3) You learn a lot of skills, take advantage of it to supplement your income. Topside welding, marine construction (building docks etc), aquaculture, ship husbandry for recreational boats, etc. We do have slow seasons sometimes, but you wind up with so many relevant skills you should never go hungry or be financially struggling. Invest in some personal scuba and dive gear and you can make good money on the side. My usual work year is 4 months in the northeast pacific, the rest of the time at home working for myself or contracts, sometimes I will work out in the Gulf if a good opportunity appears. I bring home about $180k a year, with 4 months away from home, roughly 2-3 whole months not working at all, and the rest of the time working odd jobs/for myself at home usually a few week days every week or two.

I'm a railroad conductor and I'm making 821.51 a day for moving a train 347 miles. Most of the time it's 2 days on and 2 days off. I have over 29 years of service with 6 weeks of paid vacation and 11 paid leave days. I average over $170.000 a year and even though I have a Jr. College degree that I don't use , It was on the job training and then had to work lower paying jobs till I had enough seniority to hold a pool turn to another crew change point. The Railroad pays for the hotel and 2 meals then if I'm still not called after 16 hours I get held away pay at $ 35 an hour till I'm called to take a train back to my home terminal.

Salty sea man!! Thanks, dude. I've been 17 years in the diving sport industry as a diver and doing diving schools. Now it's time to change path a little bit, so I'm just getting into this new world of commercial diving, a whole new world for me. Thanks for inspiring me and explaining a little bit about the industry and its full aspects. What would you recommend for someone who is just starting in the industry and wants to point towards SAT diving at a certain point? Any details from someone with experience in the matter for someone who is just starting. Thanks in advance, Cheers from Chile

Don’t listen to this with reference to the earnings. It’s a 365 day salary potential. You might get a couple of days. You might get a month. Over seas for example you might get. 12 month contract. Think of it like the construction business. Some good some bad. If the weather blows up you’ll be off. You’ll find yourself always on the phone looking for work. You might earn a good day rate in SAT in the North Sea. But if you only get a couple of months work. Your earning big bucks. Do it for the experience. Not for the earnings. I worked offshore from 1977 - 1997. Then back offshore in 2012 top side. Subsea inspection engineer (3.4U) Norwegian sector

Hello Jed. I'm 33 and I work for an oil and has installation company (you probably know about) and I'm seriously thinking in getting through the diving career. My main concern is for some reason not be considered medical fit (I think I'm healthy) after investing. So can you get a certification before the course? And what doctors can pass that certification? Regards

I'm HVAC, and I have a guaranteed 40 hrs. Plus benefits. My base rate is 34hr. And that's low for my state... why risk your life for 17- 28? Seems like a horrible risk/reward prospect. I get its sounds cool and it wets the women.. but damn I don't get it..

It doesn't pay worth a sh*t. If you are lucky to get into SAT diving you will make some good money, but that money is short lived, because SAT isn't a regular occurrence. The problem is there is a bunch of diving schools out there that flood the market with new divers almost every month. Expect about 20 bucks an hour or so.

I will let you in on a little secret you don't have to go to dive school to be a commercial diver in the United States. There is a group that has tried to deem itself a governing body in the United States called ADCI. They are nothing but a group of guys that saw a way to make money by coming up with this group and have gotten dive schools and some companies to go along with it. Most of the board members own dive companies or dive schools wink wink. It's a scam so they can make money coming and going. Like I said I've been commercial diving 30 years, went to dive school at the Ocean Corp Houston, Texas before ADCI was ever thought about. Been diving all over the world and never needed it. Get your scuba diving cert go to work for an inland company they will teach you everything you need to know about commercial diving. Log your hours and dives have the supervisor sign on all of them and if you feel the need submit your logs with the extortion money to ADCI they will give you a card. Save your money and go the route I've explained here. I can guarantee you that most that go to commercial dive school aren't doing it within a couple years of graduating. You do it the way I'm telling you and you can see if it's something you really want to do for a living without wasting money on school or equipment.

This isnt very accurate. Saturation divers in 2023 can easily command over 400k usd a year if you work for supertankers or large companies like Jotun.

😂 I guess.... If you spend all year in the bin... Or your extremely lucky to get on a job that pays $3500 per day. Sure $400k could be made if you're able to work in Australia or the UK but is not a fair representation of what the industry is paying outside of those countries/unions.
