Homeschool with Rachel
Приєднався 22 бер 2014
Hi! I'm Rachel, a Speech Language Pathologist turned Homeschool mom to 2 boys. My oldest is a first grader and my youngest is a pre-kinder. Learning should be fun, child-centered, and in these early years filled with tons of play and learning in the outdoors. Join along for curriculum picks, setting up lessons, and overall encouragement for motherhood and homeschooling. I love Jesus, my family, and a good book, so I'm sure some book reviews will even come up from time to time.
Homeschool Day in the Life // Kindergarten & 2nd Grade // November 2024
Join us for a very average day of homeschooling! We start off with breakfast read alouds, then transition to individual subjects, and finally end with more read alouds. This is what a normal Monday through Thursday of homeschool looks like in our home, and I plan on filming a Fun Friday day in the life video soon. Hope you found this video encouraging to your homeschool journey!

Love this I thrifted 532 books for 88 dollars and 75 dvds for 22 dollars for my book giveway at applebees ( 3701 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Metairie, LA 70002). I have given away 3200 books in 10 months to babies, kids, teens, and adults.
Your 2nd grader has such a great camera presence. He gave me a giggle with some of the things he said. Thanks for sharing your day!
@@HomeschoolWithTheClarks Thanks for watching! He loves when I bring the camera out! He even pretends to film his own UA-cam videos for fun 😊
Loved! ❤ Sending love from Brazil.

I agree I used HBL A with my second grader last year and will be with my second grader next year.
@@Grace_Filled_Homeschool I’ve been contemplating splitting them into different social studies curriculums next year even though they’re 2 grades apart. It would benefit my youngest but be more teaching in my end.
@ I am using the current HBL K with h my 1st grader and HBL B with my 3rd grader. It’s going very well.

Where can I buy bible verses like yours?
Hi! I made my own, but I found these cute ones that would be perfect for open and go! amzn.to/3XLaTZp
So I missed the part where there are videos. So B+R provides a list of video links to supplement each unit/lesson?
For all the lessons in Wonders if the Earth and Sky there is a section labeled “For the Visual Learner” which has a few video links! They’re all from UA-cam which make it really easy to use. We’re using Wonders of the Plant and Fungi Kingdoms this year, and so far there’s video links for every lesson so far.
I can’t even remember what I did yesterday.
@@Imsaved777 I can relate as an adult 🤣
How exciting! We begin this Monday. May you have a wonderful year mama.. you and your little ones. 💗☺️
Thank you 🙏 Praying you have a wonderful first day!!!
Hi, how did Treasure Hunt Reading work for you?
@@ashleymurphy4813 we completed journey 1 and it really did help my little guy have a solid phonics foundation. It gave him more confidence with each letter and corresponding sound. We started journey 2, but quit halfway through as it was too repetitive for us and he honestly was doing great with his other language arts curriculum.
@@HomeschoolwithRachel thank you! We are hoping to start AAR 2 after journey 2 or before
Thanks for sharing,
Hello, I am following you from Iraq 🤍 May God bless your life
@@abbasiyad1713 Hello! Have a blessed day 💜
My little guy and I loved it. Hopefully it’s a hit for your little one!
I'm starting this curriculum with my 4yo this school year, and I'm glad to hear that you think it's helpful
Great video lesson! Thank you very much for sharing it with all! It shows that he truly knows the material! Blessings to all!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your support 😊
Thank you very much for this video and sharing all your homeschool experiences with all! Truly helpful! Your video answers many questions I have, especially regarding on the use of technology! Also for sharing all the books! I will definitely look for these. Many heavenly graces to all!
Thank you for watching and sharing your kind words of support! Wishing you a blessed day 😊
WOW! THANK YOU! Your video is very very helpful! I learned a lot. I certainly did not know this! This is totally new to me. I also went to a private school (Catholic late 70's) and we did not memorize Bible verses. So I can even use it NOW for my personal life (I'm 57 yrs old). May you, your family and all your subscribers be abundantly blessed forever and ever!
Thank you for your kind words! It’s helped me so much to memorize verses with my children so I’m glad you found this helpful 😊
Very helpful video!! Random question, but do you know the name of the paint color you used? It's really pretty and I've been looking for a light green for my daughter's room!
Thanks for sharing a good look inside!
You’re welcome!
This sounds so fun and I love that it's literature based. 🥰🥰
Thank you!!! Literature based is my favorite.
how do I locate my scriptures within my memory box? I’ve got lots of scriptures and no “method to my madness”❣️Help❣️
Thanks for your question! I use tabs to organize. My organization tabs are titled learning, even days, odd days, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and then the numbers 1-31 to represent all the days in a month. One verse will be in each tab as we methodically work our way through the verses. The only tabs with more than one verse are the numbered tabs since as my children master the verses they review them just once during the month. I hope that helps 💜
Thank you for sharing your experience. We just did Bookshark for Kindergarten, and the history read alouds made my sensitive boy anxious and too scared to sleep for a few weeks. So... I have been tempted to try something different like Beautiful Feet Books Around the World Part One since we are an half Asian family, and my home cooking is basically a fusion of all the Asian countries listed. But I wasn't pleased of the book recommendations for India in the sample. Does it get better for the other Asian countries? I got the first impression that the curriculum creator only wanted to suggest old classic books on those countries which were usually written by Westerners.
Thanks for your kind comment. This curriculum is very Eurocentric and like you said many are from a Western perspective. If I had to do it over again, I would probably choose Build Your Library. I believe their level K is a similar Around the World curriculum but with different book choices. Hope you find something that works for your child!
@@HomeschoolwithRachel Thank you so much for the input. I would love to try Build Your Library, but I got to get my charter to approve it so my effort making it happen would count toward state standards. Maybe in a couple of years, I really hope my kid will be ready to try Beautiful Feet Books or go back to Bookshark (I missed the memo that I should choose a level with my kid's age being in the upper range. 😅)
Love it!! These are my favorite kind of videos to watch! Curriculum reviews mean so much when they come backed up with lots of personal experience!
Glad you liked it! These are some of my favorite videos too 😊
Thank you so much for sharing! Currently looking for math curriculum for Kinder and was looking into Singapore Math. This was so helpful.
I’m glad it was helpful! We really like Singapore Dimensions 😊
Aaawww! That was lovely! 🙏☺️
Thank you so much sweet mama!
Hola! Fellow SLP turned homeschool Mom with a rising k and 2nd grader. I “retired” in 2019. Lol
Hello! So glad to have another SLP stop by and watch a video. I retired in 2017 😂
I’ve been using B&R language arts since kindergarten and my daughter thrives on it. I wouldn’t use any other language arts curriculum with it
That’s wonderful your daughter thrives with B&R LA! We’ve used B&R the last 2 years for science and thrive in it as well. I’m still undecided which LA program will best fit his needs.
Love how you're planning this. We are starting ATR 2 in a week as well. Are you planning to have them do note booking or coloring maps/animals from that region? I will be.
Thank you! We just finished up with the Brazil unit and will be doing Peru and Chile in the summer. We did all the note booking pages and it's so nice to see their progression in learning how to map and color with more precision! I hope you have a great time with this curriculum!
Chicken tikka masala for Great Britain 😃? I live in England, odd choice. We haven’t done this program, but we are starting BFB early America history primary soon, and I am noticing as I am planning, that there will be many more lessons than 94. I have estimated 140 lessons that’s using some rabbit trail books and video references. How many lessons would you make this program and how many in picture books around the world part 1 too, please?
@@jessicajones611the curriculum doesn’t specifically have a total number of lessons since there are so many supplemental book recommendations that aren’t listed as lessons. I added up the lessons and then a few supplemental book recommendations. It totaled up to around 100 days of lessons for Around the World Part 2 and 90 days of lessons for Around the World Part 1. Hope that answered your question 💜
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I am not working with anyone. I have been watching videos, paying for online courses, and buying things from TPT. Any guidance would be appreciated, although it sounds like maybe you would have to hear him to help me so maybe that is not possible. Thanks again. Blessings.
Yes, I would definitely have to see and hear him to make the best recommendations since there are a few different things that could be impacting him. Keep it up because it sounds like you’re doing all your research. A speech therapist may be helpful if things aren’t progressing but I understand there are barriers to getting speech therapy 💙
Thank you for the encouragement. I will find out how to work with a speech therapist in a year if we don’t get it. I’m sure homeschoolers have that option somehow. In the meanwhile, if you ever feel like doing a 25 min consultation w us I would gladly pay for your time just to make sure we aren’t missing something key!!!
@@gingerdillard1664 I am not doing any video consultations, but I will give you some info on the three different options you have for speech therapy because it can be confusing. First is going through the school system because speech therapy is covered for homeschoolers through special education by creating an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This option is free and he would likely receive 1-2 sessions per week. Second is getting a doctor order for speech therapy and using your medical insurance to cover some of the cost for you. Third is finding a private practice speech therapist and paying out of pocket. Good luck and all the best on making progress!!!
💛THANK YOU!!!! My husband and I will start a conversation about all of this and look into it! VERY HELPFUL~ finding your channel has been a blessing!! THANK YOU AGAIN!
You mentioned being a speech pathologist ~ do you have any advice for a 7 year old struggling with the R sound? We have been working on strengthening mouth muscles and minimal pairs but not seeing results. Thank you!!! Blessings.
Hello and thanks for your comment! It sounds like you are working closely with your speech therapist on exercises. I would keep up the work you’re doing because that R will likely come with continued treatment. I know it’s hard in the moment, but results will payoff in time. Stay encouraged and also ask your specific speech therapist for more activities for his specific R distortion since your speech therapist knows his distortion the best 😊 Good Luck!
I stumbled on your channel looking for Singapore Dimensions reviews and I'm staying for everything homeschooling! Loved your curriculum picks and actually took the plunge on Dimensions PKA because of your reviews! It's fabulous!! Are you still loving it for your older son? I've heard several people talk about hitting a wall in grade 1 and switching to Math With Confidence or other conceptual programs in the same vein as Singapore and MWC, so I'm curious if you're pressing on with Dimensions or considering a switch!
Hi Emily! Thanks for your kind words. We are sticking with Singapore Dimensions for 2nd grade. We have a few lessons left in level 1B and it’s challenging but in a good way if that makes sense. The games really help him stay motivated because the workbook going from levels 1A to 1B was significantly more challenging. We are sticking with Singapore because it works for us but I am completely open to changing if we hit a wall 😊
@HomeschoolwithRachel thanks for sharing! That's great that it has fun games to keep things positive!
I plan on using the same LA and math! my son actually sees a SLP twice a week and wondering what phonics you would recommend in addition to TGATB?
Hello and thanks for your comment! Depending on your specific child’s needs I would recommend 3 different programs. Explode the Code is workbook style, All About Reading has tons of research to back it up as it’s an Orton-Gillingham based approach, and then Treasure Hunt Reading has videos and a free workbook which you print online and follows the Orton-Gillingham approach. My now 1st grader needed extra support when he was a kindergartener and we used Treasure Hunt Reading for about 6 months until he was more confident in his phonics skills. These are 3 different programs but depending on what your child’s needs are hopefully one of these help supplement TGATB!
How did you end up liking Letters & Numbers? 😀
It wasn’t our favorite unfortunately. We ended up skipping the Numbers section as it was too simplistic for my Pre-Kinder. We did like the Letters portion but it is very repetitive with the same/similar activities for each letter. It got the job done though because he knows all his letters and sounds and is beginning to string CVC words together. I would have picked a different curriculum if I had another Pre-Kinder because I wouldn’t want to teach from it again. I have a review of it on my channel if you’re interested 💙
Here’s the video link if you’re interested! ua-cam.com/video/pzUFKrNaAGY/v-deo.htmlsi=2j3oMUVtVCa0PZgW
You might also enjoy the Pre K-8 Environmental Activity Book from Project Learning Tree. I recently picked it up after watching another UA-camr's flip-through, and it is just marvelous! I am using it to supplement the Nature Study from Blossom and Root for my Kinder kiddo.
Ooo I’ll have to look into that resource! Thanks for sharing 💙
I have a very bright almost 3-year-old and I'm considering using just the teachers manual and textbook to go through this with her. Do you think it would be sufficient? Or do we absolutely need the workbook? Thanks for a great video!!
The workbook gives good review of the concepts but would not be necessary especially if you plan on using the games and centers in the teacher manual. The games and centers are so fun and hands on! Happy homeschooling 😊
@@HomeschoolwithRachel thank you!
Lovely flip through. The library is a great place to start gathering those books 🙌☺️
Thank you! The library is one of my favorite places 📚
I'm so excited for you! 🎉 Homeschooling is so much fun!
It’s the best!!! 💙
Strongly Recommend Homeschool Languages. Unless they have a pretty decent vocabulary in Spanish and you have some Spanish Llamitas might be a little bit of a stretch. Llamitas focuses a lot more on "academic skills" reading, math skills etc. Homeschool Languages on the other hand is focused a lot more on building conversational skills and very very gently begins to introduce some of the grammar and pre reading skills. It's very kinesthetic and makes it all super fun. We're almost finished with Homeschool Languages Level 1 and my little girl has learned a lot. One of the great thing also about Homeschool languages is that the teacher guide is scripted in a way that you can implement if you don't know any Spanish at all. And it's pretty much open & go. I like the idea of Beautiful Mundo and have looked at it several times, but my problem is that it's just a little too unstructured and decision fatigue is real. LOL.
The decision fatigue is so real with Beautiful Mundo! That's completely my problem implementing it every week. We've worked our way through it over the past year, but I want something much more structured for our next Spanish curriculum. You're the second to recommend Homeschool Languages! Thanks for your insight 💙
New Sub here! 1st off so happy to have found your channel, 2nd Love your tips for the lessons, review, and honesty. I have been wondering about this curriculum for my pre-k'r, as I am on the hunt for his curriculum currently. I am a homeschooling channel as well!
Hi Rene! So glad you found this video 💙 I'll have to stop by your channel and see what you ultimately pick for your pre-k'r in your curriculum picks videos 😊 Happy homeschooling to you and your kids!
I saw a video for a Spanish curriculum the other day that looked so amazing… but I can’t remember what it was now 😂
Homeschool Languages! It’s kinda pricey but looks amazing. I saw it on Seven in All’s channel (thanks UA-cam viewing history)
I filmed this video awhile ago and saw that same video from Rachel a few days ago 😅 it’s added to my l growing list of choices! That curriculum is visually appealing so it may make me want to teach from it more than my current curriculum.
We are going to do Early American History with Sonlight too. Maybe if I actually plan next year. 😜 We liked Sonlight’s new K World History quite a bit. We did most of those literature books this year so they must not have switched those - definitely found some new favorites!
Im so excited for all the books!!! History used to be my least favorite subject in school, but I am actually so excited to teach history since it’s all stories and literature based!
Hey!! If you can’t get your boys into the co op class maybe you could sort of outsource with BJU press Spanish dvds or Masterbooks has a new online program as well. Just a thought!!
Oooo I hadn't even thought of those options! I'll have to look into them. Thanks for your wisdom 💙
