United Kingdom
Приєднався 1 лют 2022
Hi everyone and welcome.
On this channel I will be posting one Wallsend History video and one Crime and punishment video every Thursday. I am also hoping at a later date to post a North East history video on a Sunday night. I have a huge love of the history and stories of my local area, of people, places, buildings etc and I want to share it with everyone. I hope you will enjoy what you see.

Jesmond Old Cemetery, some interesting graves part two
A second short video covering some of the graves and the interesting lives of those buried there, in Jesmond old Cemetery. I hope you will enjoy it and find it interesting. Filmed back in sunny September this year.
I am still quite a novice at filming outside so do forgive me for some of the camera movements, I will get better with practice, I hope!
I would just like to add, I always try to reply to all comments but have noticed recently some of them seem to vanish before I see them, so I am not ignoring anyone I just can't always see what you said. I am a little slow replying these days due to other commitments but I do get round to all of the comments eventually :)

Thank you for the update on the cemetery, it's fascinating to hear about the lives of people from the past, some of the headstones are quite elaborate
your drawings are great
Thank you so much.
Another fantastic video .. thank you

Thank you for all the work you put into these videos. I love hearing tales from where I grew up. They bring back so many memories. Every time I have a hot chocolate, I can see myself sitting in dads car drinking hot chocolate from a willow pattern paper cup having just been for a swim at Wallsend baths. Oh happy days.
Thank you, so glad you enjoy them. I went to Wallsend baths many times, however I still can't swim ha ha
Thank you all for watching.

Thankyou once again for a very interesting video. Old cases are fascinating. Surely Harold was not mentally well. Sorry for the wee lass. Cheers.
Thank you for watching. Yes I too like the old cases, but they often show that little has changed today, sadly.
Brilliant Julie thanks and Keep up the Brilliant Work

Just found this by chance and I'm so glad I did. Very interesting and sad video, but beautifully told. I like your drawings. I have just subscribed.
Thank you so much and welcome to the channel :)
I suspect there may have been a lot of betting on the race.
Yes I think you could be right about that.
I was born in Newcastle, but this is the first time I've heard of this event.
I was born just down the road from Newcastle and have to say I knew nothing about this either until I was researching something else. So much of our local history is still unknown to many of us.
Nice One Julie and thanks

Hello again,Julie. It seems to me too, that this is a case of temporary insanity, and that he wasn't culpable.I do find it odd that he served only 10 years; presumably, he was a model prisoner. In any event,it doesn't seem that he offended again, and it's also another case where guilt could be seen as a punishment by itself. The 💔 Thank you once again, Julie, for another sad-but-intriguing case. Goodbye until the next one. 👍🙈⚘
Yes, I simply could not think of a reason why it happened other than a temporary case of insanity. Harold, as you say, would have lived with that guilt for the rest of his life. Thank you for watching.

A time when officials claiming that lessons would be learned would probably have been correct and future landing stages would have been made more durable and safe. It doesnt sound like 1867 was the best year to be going out or staying in.
Yes 1867 was quite a bad year for Newcastle Upon Tyne. I still hated those Ferry landings and gangways when I used them in the 70's.
Psalms 107:1 “O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
Thank you for watching.
Excellent video, well narrated and illustrated. I don’t know if the ferry company’s books still exist (possibly in the local record office if they do, or the current compan’s archive) but they would indicate if any financial penalty had been imposed. The Board of Trade archives for that period is in the National Archives at Kew, London. They, too would record any further action. In both cases, if the material exists, it would be a challenge to find the relevant reference, especially not knowing if it exists or not.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Yes it would be interesting to do some further research but yes, it would be a challenge, I wish they made information easier to find.
In charge of, guilty but the race came first 😉
I certainly found that very odd, the race was important but surely the accident was more important, but I guess it depended on what stories they hoped would sell their papers.
Another 👍☝,👋Julie🙂
Thank you for watching.
Tragic end to a day out. Respect to all who tried to assist.
I know, and it also reinforces my fear of those wooden gangways that I hated when I was a child.
@@julieswallsendhistory8671 Yes! Not sure how we survived! Little health & safety input & no seatbelts! I can picture my mother, with her headscarf on, holding my baby sister on a family outing with my father deliberately going fast around a corner so that we kids in the back would slide on the vinyl car seat into each other. We'd all be laughing except my mother!!!
Nice One again Julie thanks and Keep up the Brilliant Work
Thank you so much and thank you for watching.
Thanks for that interesting episode. Very absorbing. Cheers.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it.
In an era before tv and other similar forms of entertainment such things were a form of public entertainment. Seems strange to us now. Also there's also the ghouls who do still exist and who seem to thrive on viewing disasters!
Yes ferry company is guilty of negligence of safety, crowd control and emergency happenings. Manslaughter with payments to injured parties
Yes I agree, I may try another search and see if any further details come up to see if they did end up with a fine.
Thank you ❤
Thank you for watching.

Thank you :) I hope you are well.
what a tragic accident .. obviously the so called strengthened gangway wasnt up to the job and colapsed under the weight .. should have been tested before it was put in place ..great story thanks for posting it
Thank you. Yes I think maybe they were trying to fix something that they knew wasn't quite right and then didn't do it properly and thought it would be ok, never expecting quite so many people to be standing on it and any one time.

I used to be a carer for a lady who owned an historic house in her village. People used to walk up the path to get a look at the house because it couldn’t be seen from the road. I don’t know how anyone could do that and was surprised even more that the elderly owner never seemed to mind. She told me it happens often. I wonder if the owners of the house you found experience the same thing. What you could try doing is looking it up as if it’s for sale as you can often get the old details showing up with all the relevant photos including interior photos.
Oh bless her, I think that would have driven me crazy, imagine stepping out to go somewhere and finding someone in your garden just wandering around? Yes I have done for sale "look ups" before, usually just to see old personal family homes but it is quite useful for other things too, it is a good idea.
The graves lined up flush against the cemetery wall looks strange but I have seen this in other cemeteries. Wish I could have seen the dragonflies! They're amazing. Thanks for the video
I have family buried in a cemetery in Kent where, I believe, it was made into a park of some kind, the headstones were all moved and now line the outer walls. I did find that a very strange thing to do. As for the dragon flies, I have to admit I have not seen as many at one time before, they were amazing but so fast and impossible to see on video camera. Thank you for watching.
Youre few mistakes did not take away from the great story telling. However if you have a problem with youre making of mistakes, possibly look into editing.
Thank you for saying that. Yes I have thought about editing but I am terrible at it, the few attempts I have made with a free version were very annoying and stressful, but maybe with a few months practice I might get the hang of it ha ha. Thank you for watching.
He not only murdered his wife but also murdered his unborn child, I understand that at the turn of the 20th century life was extremely hard for the poorer classes but that does not excuse killing your wife & child, just because your going through a rough patch in life, struggling to make ends meet. There are people going through the same today & if everyone turned to murder because they couldn't see a way clear to get themselves out of the mess they found themselves in, the prisons would be overflowing. Therefore I think he got off lightly for a heinous crime, depressed or not, he should have felt the full weight of the law at that time, not had his sentence commuted
I also can't help but wonder what he thought was going to happen if his wife and unborn child were not around, did he assume the family would take the children and he could be free from the burden of taking care of them and just get on with his life as a single man? I think he was let off far too lightly.
