Diverse: Issues In Higher Education is the preeminent source of critical news, information and insightful commentary on the full range of issues concerning diversity in American higher education. Diverse began writing about diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education long before diversity and multiculturalism became “hot-button” issues.
Today, our mission remains as true as it was 40 years ago: to provide information that is honest, thorough and balanced. We seek, through traditional and nontraditional mediums, to be change agents and generate public policies that resolve inequities that still exist today. In fulfilling our mission, we believe we are helping to build the educational, cultural, social and economic structures necessary to allow every individual to reach his or her full potential, and thus contribute to the greater good of their community and the nation.

CAMP at Washington State: Improving Student Outcomes for Migrant and Seasonal Farm Working Families
In this episode we sit down with Michael Heim, the Director of Migrant Education Student Access & Support (MESAS) at Washington State University Pullman (WSU).
Heim has overseen both the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) and the High School Equivalency Program (HEP) at WSU for seven years. Under his leadership, WSU CAMP has been selected as this year’s Example of Excelencia at the baccalaureate level.
Created in 2005 by Excelencia in Education, Examples of Excelencia is a national initiative that identifies and promotes evidence-based practices improving Latinx student success in higher education.
Tune in as Heim, and Diverse host Ralph Newell, dive deep into the inner workings of the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), which supports students from migrant and seasonal farm working backgrounds during their first year of college.
WSU’s CAMP serves a cohort of Latinx students annually, focusing on retention through evidence-based practices that positively impact these students' educational journeys. Despite its successes, the conversation also explores the challenges CAMP faces, such as the need for continued support beyond the first year and the role of community partnerships in sustaining student success.
This is the third feature in our series of four schools being recognized in 2024 by Excelencia in Education. In case you missed it, check out our prior episode featuring this year’s Example of Excelencia at the associate level: Getting to Know the EAP program at Reading Area Community College episode: ua-cam.com/video/W6xQDOZ3tX4/v-deo.html
KEY POINTS:
- WSU emphasizes diversity, focusing on its growing Latinx population.
- CAMP supports students facing challenges, leading to a 10% higher graduation rate.
- More funding could further boost CAMP’s retention and graduation outcomes.
- How Heim’s work with CAMP has shaped his views on education access for underserved groups.
- Ongoing support from K-12 to higher ed is vital for migrant students.
- The University of Idaho tragedy underscores the need to validate student concerns and build trust.
- WSU and University of Idaho CAMP programs foster community among migrant students.
QUOTABLES:
“CAMP is a program specifically designed to help students who come from a background in migrant and seasonal farm working to have success during the first year and transition into their second year. - Michael Heim
"The stronger the foundation for that student, the more successful they'll be later." - Michael Heim
"The goal is to really serve the state as a land grant institution. We've noticed that at least one sector is kind of growing pretty quickly and that population is our Latinx student population." - Michael Heim

Absolutely amazing work team! Lets Go Cougs!
I can see white through Tim✡️
I really wonder how jews can claim they're white ? An arab claiming that or chinese would't make sense they are at best as european as turks. would it make sense they claim to be european ? Why do you talk on behalf of some grup you don't represent
It was a pleasure to learn about your program, Noemi. You and your team are doing amazing work!
Thanks for listening!
Hello! 😊 Thank you, and I hope you are doing very well. I analyzed your UA-cam channel and found that your content ideas and quality are very good! 🎉 However, it seems you are not getting enough subscribers and viewers in proportion to your content. Listening to Tim Wise certainly keeps my bearings in place.
Lewis Paul Perez Charles Lopez Michelle
She's in hiding now thanks to Matt Walsh, and all the had to do was let normal people, the majority of Americans know her view points. That's it. If her ideas were actually logical and not insane embarrassing nonsense, she would be glad she got free promotion. The woke mob is being exposed, and even they know their ideas are nonsense. HAHAHAHA
Great conversation!
She stole the idea and this entire book and idea from Theodore Allen. She is a con.
Racism begins when "Jesus " was presented as a white god.
This is how the Dialectic works
Like wise some of my comments are being deleted from what I wrote about their something really wrong within this phone network etc:
Let me cut my skin open. Do the ignorant people in the comments know what blood is? Oh mine is red. Is that racism? Act like the blind when it comes to anyone’s skin color and be deaf to hearing mentally ill speakers of race or religion. You know what’s poisonous is when you continually provoke and say,” this is racist the world is flat and if you don’t agree you are racist.” Sick of it!!! Get along no matter who it is.
I am surprised when I hear some white people say they don't see color. Please I want to know how they drive through traffic lights. How do they know their car in the parking lot.
Dr. Jacqueline Battalora. You are awesome. I feel your early relationship with person of color also shaped your opinion and acceptance of different races. Race discrimination is prevalent in advanced and western countries. Ignorance and fear are the basis of this human behavior. It's also human phobias.
COMMUNISM
If this is from a black lady, it would be outrageous. Jacqueline is not just white, but has PhD degree, from Scottish heritage? I think she's spoken the truth here. It makes sense, now Putin just put out the Black Jesus. 😮😮
What I find out is terms but no definitions or laws that no race bait. I and others would be willing to listen. Saying a term white supremacy my thought when I hear this word as whites are better which is obviously wrong. Asian who come hear or born here have no problems and very much accepted sure there some but I find this to be rare.
Dr Battalora work & efforts are invaluable🤔& i for one thk her for sharing
😢
(((Tim Wise)))
15 minutes in & I am surprised from how I discovered her, she isn't dealing with race From A Historical perspective Bacons Rebellion and Previous to Bacons Rebellion we know White & Black is A Color Coded cast system
The eternal jew.
Dr. Jacqueline Battalora , Thank you for all you have contributed to Society. Ralph appears not to have comprehended your work by his referring to Dr. Jacqueline as 'WHITE'.
I really Love that Mr. Newell and Mr. Wise provided an Amazing and Informative discussion on these Really Important issues!! Thank you both so Very Much for providing this information and guidance!!
Anti-racism is racist!
Every. Single. Time. ALWAYS a backlash. That's why we need to be armed with SOOOOO much information!
All I can say is PHENOMENAL! the panelists were so specific and REAL!
God bless this man bless this man AND HIS FAMILY!!!!
Thank you for your spirit 🫡🫡🫡💪🔥💥⚡🫱👁️🫱👂
Just for a little bit of historical clarification there was an invention of the African-American there is an invention of the black man there's an invention of the negro all in the same time of the invention of the so-called white man which denotes status both the word black and the word White and so forth when we got these misnomers the major question is who is the so-called black people, are they the real original people of this land the Aboriginal people the indigenous people the true sovereigns of this land and the other question as to why all the laws are made with the scheme of the identity classifications
Yeah she mentioned how the chess game you know it's equal to the situation but the chess game is played backwards meaning is played from a patriarchal standpoint when it's really a matriarchal game
She mentioned the key word that is responsible for the problems patriarchy is the word this is evidence letting you know that everyone knows that it needs to go back to matriarchal structure
These mechanisms were put in place by the black conquistadors The hidden Hand the unseen hand and executed by their pawns the so-called white man
All the religions that we know are the mechanisms of the divide and conquer
I love Manifest Destiny
Racism is a false narrative. Stop feeding in to it😢
Asian American women don't see color, they think they are white
Dr. Yakub
Very insightful interview! Great book too!
Just how intellectually shallow and disengenuous can modern people? Any dominant culture has this so called "privilege". Can any of you understand even just a tiny bit that both Marxism and Islam, and every other corrupt tyrannical cultish group, wants to take down Judeo Christianity, which in the West is predominantly White, at least until WWII. Why? Because even though White British Europeans of the Judeo Christian nations are actually a minority among the Darker Skinned Races, they brought something to the table that others (with their HUGE populations didnt, couldnt or tyrannically wouldnt. And many among the Darker Skinned Races (fed up with tribal nepotism and dear leader tyranny) wanted what the Western White Race had on offer. I mean, it's not like there has been a mad rush of Whites to get into the Dark Skinned cultures, eh? which by the way, many were at least semi-civilzed by association with Whites. Tell me, did the Whites impose the Engl8sh language in the global business community? ? Why wasnt it German or French or Spanish? Or Chinese? Or Farsi? Why the English language of that particular group of Whites become so popular? There is so much truth to tell, but, i think it's wasted here... haters gonna hate! The need to take down successful people and cultures is a disgusting human tendency. White are not superior nor a better Race, but, they are a Race and not merely lightened by northern winters! Do you even know anything about genetics? Yet, they are flawed like everyone else, but the Western (predominantly "rule of law" civilzed, educated and even the poorest are better off than most Brown cultures) White Race no more needs to examine itself than does any other Race, Culture or Civilzation. Meaning, we ALL need to do it...collective culture or individual...and the Holy Bible is a good start. But you won't get anything out of the Bible with the arrogant assumption another person or another culture needs humbling more than you! Honestly, this silliness must stop, but it wont because insecure haters enjoy feeling superior, so they find a target to demean and bully, and that's exactly what's happening here! One thing is for sure, i could easily wish White Liberal Atheist Women hadn't been given the vote... they're going to be the utter ruin of the West. When the West becomes the East, these truly ignorant shallow over-educated White Liberal Loonie Leftist Women (who cant even explain what is a woman!) are going to be more than a little dismayed when they finally realize what "useful idiots" they've been for the enenies of Western Judeo Christian Civilzation...Marxism and Islam. God help us all untangle this Marxist CRT BLM TRANS mess before it sinks the West and the whole earth becomes a "one party, one government, one tyrant" system of oppression.

I am sorry but Mr Wise's marxist ideas are absolutely wrong. The problems black Americans face today are not because of "white privilege" or "racism" but because of goverment policies implemented after WWII. "In examining the challenges faced by Black Americans today, it's essential to consider the impact of government policies implemented after World War II. Redlining practices, discriminatory lending policies, and limited access to quality education are among the factors that have contributed to economic disparities and hindered the progress of Black communities. The 'War on Drugs' and its unintended consequences, such as mass incarceration, further exacerbated the cycle of disadvantage. Critically, certain welfare policies unintentionally discouraged family stability. Unequal access to quality education and community disinvestment have perpetuated social and economic challenges. Acknowledging the historical impact of these specific government actions is crucial for understanding the roots of inequality."
Slavery - historically speaking - was all around the world, all people, all cultures, throughout all history and it still exists. All races have been slaves, all races have been slave owners. White people were the first to abolish it. Thanks white people! My question: are Robin's DEI programs helping or making race relations worse? Listening to this she makes an awful lot of assumptions about both black and white people. Which is kind of racist.
I just signed up today for an account with Diverse Issues in Higher Education. I love these videos and podcasts. Please keep them coming. Excellent information! Thanks
