Here we test two second hand cars against each other, a 10 year old hybrid and a 7 year old diesel, to see which gives more miles per gallon, and which is quicker in acceleration, in real world driving conditions. The cost per litre for the Shell garage on the motorway test was £1.589 for petrol and £1.759 for diesel, for the city test using the Esso garage it was £1.599 for petrol and £1.855 f...
K&N Air Filter vs OEM Filter - Diesel

K&N filters may give power gains to performance cars but I want to find out what it can do to an average 4 cylinder diesel engined family car like mine. In this video I test the K&N filter and the Lexus OEM filter over a range of speeds in second gear third gear and four gear to see if a less restrictive air filter translates into increased acceleration.

WINTER TYRES vs SUMMER TYRES - Can you use Winter Tyres all year?
Переглядів 14 тис.2 роки тому
Winter tyres have superior grip to standard summer tyres in icy wet conditions. But do summer tyres have superior grip compared to winter tyres in dry warm conditions? And if so, by how much? Changing tyres from summer to winter and back again costs around £120/year, not including the tyres. Can winter tyres be used all year round instead of switching back to winter tyres? Let's find out.

EGR VALVE CLEAN - Toyota Avensis 2.2 Diesel
I've got a 2010 auris now on 212,000 miles, In the 7 years and 135k of ownership it's had EGR valve cleaned at 140k, 2 rear springs, tyres and bulbs. The hybrid battery is starting to sag and really could do with a new one. MPG has dropped from mid 60s to 50mpg. Still on the original brakes. They never seem to wear out. Over all, fantastic car, will probably be skipping the mk2 though and going for the corolla. High mile mk2 with 300k on the clock are available for as little as £2.5k now. And to be honest I'd probably pick one up as a spare car for tip runs etc.
I own a Vauxhall Grandland x 1.5 8 speed auto, combined mpg is 55-56, long runs 63-70, I think I will stick with it for while lol
Very good and thorough. Thank you.
“This would make a great car for burglars”😂😂😂
What's the process of starting this car? Foot on the brake + gear on neutral + push button, or the turn the key? And is there any settings/menus inside to check the battery degradation/health? I am thinking of buying a 2017 or after model. Thanks
I'm clueless about cars and want to learn so this was helpful on how the set up of the brakes are. Is the principle any different for the front brakes?
Thanks guys, bit of a faff but well worth it if it cures it. I can not even hear the motor running on mine so while the wheel arch is off might replace the whole unit (depending on cost). Thanks again.
Legend 💯
A really useful review. You should take car reviewing up as a profession! You cover everything one might want to know, calmly and knowledgeably and you’re not wasting time being ‘amusing’ or trying to be a character. (One Jeremy Clarkson was more than enough, and if I never hear from him again it will be too soon.)
What is the mileage on this 10 year old Auris? And how long do you think these engines will go for ? Cheers
Ive just looked on autotrader, theres about 5 listed at 2 and a half grand with over 300,000 miles on them this engine is very reliable and not bad to work on
Detailed and very fair review. The soundproofing is definitely a weak spot, especially on a motorway. As you say, it's not an engaging car to drive. It suits me but not a car for a keen driver. Mine is about the same age but with 72K miles on it. Only things it's needed are tyres, brakes, suspension bushes and a new 12V battery (original lasted 10 years). Bit surprised that the Toyota dealer didn't know what battery degradation is as that's the very thing that the hybrid health check is for! A taxi driver told me that the batteries tend to fail around 150K miles.
Fantastic review. Really well done. Thank you.
Thanks for watching.
The worst car I've ever driven. sent back to the dealer after three months
Out of interest was it anything specific, or just not what you expected?
Great video, thanks! Some have mentioned the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator to drain coolant. Be careful on older cars when unscrewing the plug they may become brittle from age and can break. I've got a 2006 Avensis (with 206 000 miles on the clock.) around 11 years ago at 105 000 miles Toyota fitted a brand new sub -assembly under warranty, albeit the car was way out of it's warranty as there was a fault with the engine. While the engine was out I got them to refurb the clutch. Touch wood - The car is going like a Boeing. To change the subject slightly. If you don't drive your car often after driving on gritted roads during winter wait for the second rainfall or so, (wait for the first to wash away any salt.) take the car out for a drive to rinse the salt off the underside of the car. My car has suffered rust because I leave the car parked for extended periods afterwards. Safe driving.
Thanks for the tips about the salt. Good to see you're in the exclusive 200k club and your Avensis is still going strong.
Why all the drag starts if the video is supposed to be about real world economy?
Thanks for your comment, I like to include acceleration tests out of personal interest, the MPG tests take hours to complete where as the acceleration tests take a few seconds.
My dad had one of these he got rid of because of ulez....it was pretty good but he found it hard to put it into first gear??? There was lot of resistance - and it seemed to not be very smooth when shifting gears i dont know if that was normal or if there was an issue with the car...whats your thoughts on this
I don't have any issues going into first, but 1st to 2nd on a cold winters morning is a bit clunky, the gearbox oil takes a long time to get to operating temperature. Also it doesn't like quick changes between 2nd and 3rd, the selector springs are weak and its easy to go from 2nd to 1st instead.

Good cars???
If you're a diesel head yes, for the majority of people the IS250 petrol is less complicated, for me I prefer the IS220 diesel. I have a 15 year review video coming soon.
Nice detailed review! Just got back driving in Germany with our 2013 Auris Estate hybrid. This is a very well balanced car! The only issues I have is Aircon evaporator is corroded and little bits of white powdery dust comes out every time you switch on the AC, in order to replace it, you'd need to take the whole dash out! I'm not bothered, it's a Toyota after all.
How much is consumption during winter?
I also have a (crossover) Lexus UX 250h F Sport. It has not an average reliability CVT, it has an extremely reliable ECVT (they are very different, even their acronyms match 75%). This Lexus is #1 in the small crossover segment due to its excellent reliability (even with my spirited driving I had zero issues in more than 5 years, not even recalls) and low TCO (about a third of the far less reliable German competitors). The self-charging hybrids are the best of both worlds (especially if they are based on Toyota hybrid system). Btw, Lexus brand is #1 in reliability and #3 in lowest TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).
Hi Please do an Lexus LBX review and 0-60 please!
I certainly didn't buy mine for fast starts!
A heated Steering Wheel! I want one! Thank you for an in depth demo but I cannot afford one I’m afraid. I remember Jeremy Clarkson (I think) mentioning flat bottomed steering wheels on some posh German cars were because of Bratwurst consumption.
Thanks for the first comment, and the insights into German consumption.
How about in California areas were only snows 1 inch few months a year can we use snow tires year round
Its a good question, I personally would not use winter tyres all year round in California, you would benefit more from the sharper handling you get from summer tyres. If you lived in Seattle or the North West, then yes winter tyres work very well in wetter climates.
This review is great....i owned one and i know alot from u
Just bought an 09 IS 220 almost 2 weeks ago & being that it's winter now & the crappy weather we've had the past week with non stop rain & 0 degrees or less most nights I hadn't had the opportunity to take it out until earlier. It drives great but the problem is I couldn't get any heat in the cabin so it was a task keeping the windows from steaming up. Apparently the car had a full service before I bought it & fresh MOT & a pre sale check. I drove it for 20 minutes & it was still freezing in the cabin. Am I missing something?
There's a button above the stereo which will use the AC to demist within a few seconds, you don't need to wait till the engine warms through to demist the front screen. On another note, because it is a long stroke diesel it does take quite a few miles before the engine warms in winter.
Better buy the auris with 1.2 turbo engine. Much more fun.
Have a 2013 Auris in Excel for about a year and a half now, and has treated me quite well! :D 😊I've not had any issues relating to the battery though, and I have left the car unattended for 2-3 weeks sometimes. I was under the impression that as long as you leave the hybrid battery with at least 2 bars left, it will trickle charge the 12v battery by itself. Wonder if that is faulty on some hybrids then for it to happen after a few days each time it's driven? A few tips I've learned that may help you, or anyone else: -EV Mode's ideal use is for when you just need to move the car a little bit from the start. It'll avoid the the engine's warm-up cycle to save on petrol. However it will not allow you to use EV mode at the start if the warm-up cycle has begun, or hybrid battery is too low. After this point I find it's pretty much useless to select EV Mode because normal hybrid operation will work exactly the same. -As you said, Eco Mode is pretty much useless, unless you're a type of person that always has a heavy foot. Though, it does seem to alter what the climate control will do; I've witnessed it turning the re-circulating air on and off by itself, and it never does that in Normal mode. Whether the extra things it does to the climate control actually saves petrol or not, I can't say since MPG values don't seem that different. -The B-Mode on the gear select basically uses the wheels to provide extra resistance by spinning the engine and pumping air without petrol. Personally have never used this, but it's intended use is for when you're going down a very long hill, and need to have some "engine braking" to alleviate grinding your brakes down while having your foot on the pedal to maintain speed along the decline. -The A/C is powered by the hybrid battery, so you won't burn MPG by keeping it always on. I use Auto on the climate control, and it seems to adjust how much compressor it needs to use. Not really noticed a difference with consumption, so probably no harm to let the car have permission to use it when it needs, plus will keep windows from fogging up on damp days.
Thanks for your comment. Where are you messaging from, is your climate warmer than the North East? Do you mean that as soon as you press power on, as long as you press EV mode straight away you can move the car slightly before the warm up cycle starts?
@@amateurtorque6709 I live in the Hampshire area in the south. Yep, as long as you press the EV mode button during the delay before the engine starts the warm-up cycle, it will allow you move the car. The battery does need to be charged somewhat for it to allow though; can't give you a solid answer, but I think if you have 50% charge or less it won't let you. As I said before though, only really useful if you need to move your car a short distance - for example I use it when I'm moving my car closer to my house due to street parking struggle. Hope this helps!
Which is the best and cheap obd scanner for auris hybrid 2014
Is it safe for the engine and for the car to do the power mode up to the maximum limit? Thank you.
Yes, these cars have wide safety margins built into the ECU, they even have soft limiters, so you can only rev to 2500 in neutral. It will harm your MPG though.
@ i have 2015 toyota auris hybrid 1.8L with 75k mileage. Is it worth it for me to keep this car for 5-10yrs? Any advice as I am a new driver? Thank you for your help.
@@alvindeguzman3126 That should be no problem if you are diligent with servicing.
@@amateurtorque6709 I will. thanks bro ❤️❤️
I had one of these for 3 years never gave me a problem but pxd it earlier this year for a Corrola which is big improvement on the Auris and can easily achieve 70 mpg on a good day Toyota make reliable cars
Thanks for the clip. Just changed mine in my 57 plate. It was filthy😮
Pleased it helped Steve.
My brother has one and has experienced the same starting problems after not using the car for a few days.
Some cars' cruise control computer is much smoother and reactive on the gradients which can influence fuel consumption. I've started using a youtube trick on the highway : you reduce the speed while climbing and recover the speed delta while descending. It seems to be more economical.
the acceleration test is somewhat unfair, the diesel was revved up upon the start, giving it an advantage
Yes, well spotted, I didn't overlap when launching the Auris, as it wasn't my car.
Pointless for a video that purported to compare economy.
Changing tyres from summer to winter and back again costs around £120/year, not including the tyres. You mean you can't change the tyres yourself? British men are as useless as women. And they can't cook, sew on a button, write a letter ... Jack, the Japan Alps Brit
Can you use Winter Tyres all year? Of course you can when you're off road as much as I am. Jack, the Japan Alps brit
Very comprehensive review. I do find myself strangely drawn to these cars even though the Corolla estate is clearly a big step forward and should be the car I'd buy.
Diesel has been used for a 100 years and will never be beaten end of story.
Best video ever well explained Thank you so much
Great video! Loved it, specialy tandem drive & apples to apples comparison. I'm having Clio mk4, 1.5dci 200Nm and 75HP. Average economy is about 4.5lit per 100km over 10k range, AC on, all terrains, city + motorway. I mostly do coasting, ramp up the speed and keep it const. I wonder did you drove hybrid as a "normal" car because it could show poor results, as I've read that hybrid should be driven with min. accelerations, and use coasting at const. speed as much as possible (well if you're the only guy on the road, right? 😊) I like brimmed diesel tank that shows ~900km autonomy but also wouldn't mind new Mazda 3 or some low-maintenance Hyndai i30
They're great on mileage them Clios with the DCi. When we were driving on the economy runs we were using minimum throttle to get upto cruising speed.

Right folks! I have to share my recent experience, 2013 Avensis with check parking break system coming on and car going into limp mode. I had the car checked by 2 mechanics and both said I needed 3 injectors and an EGR valve. After watching this video several times I took on the task of cleaning out the EGR. Well when I say it’s like a different car to drive…I’ve amazing, very powerful, unreal and all warning lights gone off on dash. I am really hoping this stays the case as the prices ive been quoted are up on €1500 for 4 injectors and the EGR bypass. Thanks very much for your help and thanks to all in the comments for your guidance. I took a large amount of sut out of the EGR today then 🚙💨💨
I'm pleased this helped on your newer T270 model. What country are you in?
Just over in Ireland here…
Thanks for the review. I always carry one of those rechargable power pack jump starters - useful bit of kit and not just for jump starting cars. If I go away I always leave my cars on CTEK conditioner chargers.
Thanks for the tip Jonathan.
These days, i had a diesel car but had a problem with dpf and ad blue injector problem traded the car in for a corolla hybrid 2024 model and love it wish id of done it sooner yes on the motorway they arent efficient but ive said quite about driving in clean air zones
did exactly the same, I love it too
Hiya, This is a brilliant review thanks, really helpful, this is our perfect next family car! One question; can extra sound proofing/deadening be fitted into the car, around the wheels, arches, doors & floor of the car to make it much quieter? Has anybody done this or had it done? Many thanks!
Thank you Leon. I haven't tried sound proofing myself, bunt think you couldnuse a range of materials and do it quite cheaply.
I have an Auris Excel hybrid, 2016 version, different dash to this one. (No coolant temperature gauge!). Interesting to note I previously had a mk 1 Auris Excel hybrid and it did have a coolant temperature gauge. Never has any issues until the 12V battery was 8 years old. It wasn't holding charge properly and needed replacing. The CVT transaxle noise when under acceleration has never bothered me. Any car when revved hard makes a noise anyway. Interesting to note the dealer made an insurance charge for a courtesy car, my Toyota dealer makes no charges, but kindly asks you consider putting some petrol in to cover your usage. Regarding the hybrid battery, I always get a hybrid battery health report at service time, but nothing specific. I suspect when it's on the diagnostic it would flag up any bad cells?. Another point you mention about dealerships finding faults at MOT time, I found similar to yourself. My last 2 MOTs have had the same advisories about the rear shock absorbers slightly misting. They could have quite easily pushed this into saying they need to be replaced, but told me there is no need to change them just yet. I have found the car overall to be really well built, smooth, mostly quiet and above all reliable. It could be described as boring I suppose, but I'll take that as a positive. It's 9 years old February next year and the running costs (apart from petrol and insurance) have been MOTs servicing, wiper blades, tyres and a new 12V battery . I have never topped any levels up apart from the washer bottle. All the buttons and switches work fine. (I have always had it serviced at the dealership.) I will probably replace it with a Corolla, alas they have taken the CD player out and the spare wheel. They have however put the coolant temperature gauge back and installed a slew of new safety warning/road assist features to bleep at you!.
You have alot of knowledge about your Auris, you should consider doing a YT video review of yours. I agree that the engine revving isn't really a big deal for the majority of driving.
