For those who lost the joy in music
This video is for anyone who has ever struggled with insecurity or doubt about their musical talent. Almost scrapped the video altogether, but I think it's an important message to share. This is the story of how I fell back in love with music. Happy (belated) AAPI month!

    This is video is so profound, I always saw your videos as such but this one is close to me as I used to “identify as a musician”, and I wouldn’t say I have the space to do so anymore. At first I didn’t get were you were going w the idol and then you said it all. I actually believe the majority of these shows are hurtful. Absolutely horrible when they have these “nerd/not talented” sections of the episode. I also believe church despite all its problems has a beautiful role in music education and practice around the globe. Well, really great video! ❤

      Thank you for the kind words. I definitely agree, while I think we should celebrate the gifted voices, I don't think ridiculing others at their expense in order to gain viewership is okay. I wouldn't have been nearly exposed to as much music if I hadn't grown up in church!

    Great video! For me I feel like I treat perfectionism as sort of a road for continuous improvement and refinement(Kaizen). I also feel like from my perspective I have to approach it with a particular caveat like when I was going through nursing school, talking with my friends, we’d often take on the mindset of shooting for the moon and even if we don’t hit it, you’ll land in the stars. Putting your best foot forward is just how we tend to do things(especially in our line of work) but like you said it’s also important to be okay with things not being entirely perfect. But I think that’s a good trait to have too because it also keeps us aware of areas where we can improve as we hone our craft and dial in those 1% improvements and eventually they’ll add up to an amazing finished product.

    • @lukezabala
      @lukezabala 5 місяців тому

      Thanks brother, 100% agree. Definitely think it's served both of us well in our field and will continue to. I think where I struggle (and I know a lot of others do too) is walking that fine line between excellence and perfectionism, which I tend to fall on the latter side. I love the quote "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good" because I fall for that trap often and need the reminder that sometimes I need to be okay with good, because perfect will come eventually with deliberate practice over time, which I guess is also another way of saying Kaizen. I'm gonna have to read that book on Kaizen I saw and let you know how it is!

    Bro! You spoke to my soul there, exact same situation ai haven’t posted a video in like 7 months because I’ve been “busy” with my full time job but really I’m terrified of failure and don’t want to post something that doesn’t look pike a movie which is unrealistic given my experience level, I read books, create systems, optimize, play with schedules and at the end of the day I don’t make videos which is the one thing that moves the needle, soooo glad I’m not the only one, let’s terminate this paralysing perfectionism!

    • @lukezabala
      @lukezabala 5 місяців тому

      Thanks again man, love your videos, but I completely understand how hard it is to produce at that quality level with a full time job. I'm starting to realize that I'm learning more with small improvements with weekly or biweekly videos, rather than super cinematic videos once every one or two months. I think the more scripts we write and content we release, the more the core of our content is improving, which is the value or message we're giving to the audience. Cinematics/visuals is always great, but I think that's something i got to be okay with not having quite perfect like I would like for this early period in my channel. Like MrWhosetheBoss said in a podcast, it's all about the aggregation of small improvements with each video. Excited for your next one man, welcome back!

    I've always been a fan of the "lite smartphone" approach. Get a cheap, small smartphone with a decent camera and use it only for basic functions (mine has google maps, music, podcasts/audiobooks, and email with no notifications). I even have a limit set on my browser. For social media, streaming, and browsing, I use my laptop and my cheap tablet. You can have all 3 devices for less than the cost of a $1,000 smartphone and you can compartmentalize your life through your devices in whatever way works for your lifestyle.

      Thanks for the kind words and encouragement Tyler. Reminds me of the Jim Carrey quote, “I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer.” Really cool to hear firsthand from someone that achieved that level of success in their field and confirms that sentiment. Trying to not get caught up in the numbers game and remind myself that even if I’m helping only one person, I’m doing what I’m supposed to. I would say slow and steady wins the race, but it’s not a race, so I’m here for the slow and steady growth with everybody. Love the community over there and thank you for the support!
