    I think the mistake was when you took the square root of both sides at around 2:37. Taking the square root of a number always gives the principal root, which is the positive root. Since 3 - 7/2 = -1/2, which is a negative number, taking the square root of (3 - 7/2)^2 does not give 3 - 7/2, but rather its absolute value, or positive 1/2.

    Unfortunately you're incorrect about the MM experiment having debunked ether theory. It only debunked the most childish definition of "ether", namely as a sort of gas on which EM waves move longitudinally. If you consider EM waves as transversal, MM debunks nothing at all. And EM waves are in fact transversal. Longitudinal waves are wave phenomena where the movement of the medium and of the wave are co-linear, such as sound waves. Transversal waves are wave phenomena where the movement of the medium and of the wave are orthogonal, such as waves on the surface of a body of water. The water moves up and down, while the waves proceed horizontally. Another example of transversal waves is vibrating strings such as in musical instruments. Longitudinal waves occur inside the body of a transmitting medium. Transversal waves occur on the surface or interface between two mediums. EM waves are definitely transversal waves, where in fact there are TWO vectors of underlying "movement", namely the electrical and magnetic vectors, which are orthogonal to each other, as well as to the propagation vector of the wave. EM waves occur on the 3D surface of a 4D medium, namely space-time. Now: Longitudinal waves propagate at a velocity that is relative to the medium they traverse, whether stationary or moving. Transversal waves propagate at constant velocity regardless of the movement of the underlying medium, such as waves in the water of a river, which seem oblivious about river flow speed or direction. Therefore EM waves, being transversal, should have been expected to move through space at constant speed even before Relativity. The Michelson-Morley experiment was designed on the assumption of EM waves being longitudinal, like sound waves, and therefore it was fundamentally, conceptually flawed.

    • @ChemistryinaNutshell
      @ChemistryinaNutshell 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for your comment. You’re right that electromagnetic waves are transverse and that transverse and longitudinal waves travel differently. The point remains that the Michelson-Morley Experiment challenged the notion of a stationary ether enough that it led to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, which posited that the speed of light is constant in all inertial frames of reference, eliminating the need for an ether and leading to new understandings of space and time.

    • @privateerburrows
      @privateerburrows 3 місяці тому

      @@ChemistryinaNutshell Thanks for the intelligent reply. To clarify, I'm not saying that there is an ether; all I'm claiming is that Michelson-Morley didn't prove a thing. None. That its misdrawn conclusions may have historically inspired an evolution is undeniable, but that's like two wrongs making a right.
