RPG escape room? Our experience with the immersive storytelling of Legacy Fables
This video was fantastic! So well put together and thorough. I enjoyed seeing parts of the convention my family and I didn't get to while we were there. We went to session 1 of the Worldhopper Ball and had some similar feelings to you. Still glad we got to be part of it, but wished it had been a better experience overall! The con itself was amazing (our first time attending) and I wish we could go every year.
Journey before Destination! Where the Red Fern Grows, despite having a very sad ending, was the first book that truly showed me books could be a gateway to experiencing emotions and realizing that a book is just as much about the journey as the destination. That said, I'm entering the contest not for myself, but for my best friend and his wife who introduced me to the Cosmere through The Way of Kings. I was able to get to DSNX this year and get my own signed copy, but if I win this contest, I'm going to give the copy to them, as a way of saying thank you for introducing me to this amazing fandom.
@@Daaaaale that's a great friend! I remember being very effected by Where the Red Fern Grows as well. Thank you for watching!
RE: the Worldhopper Ball drink lines & visibility - I went to the Day 2 Late Session and opted to not get my drink until after the first round of speeches, and ended up waiting about 45 minutes in line for one, and wished I'd have known there were more visual things coming up. I completely missed the Adolin/Kaladin duel, and had a very limited view of the Bridge 4 spear dance/Honorspren. It was definitely still a very fun experience, but I wished I could have seen more, as I had a front row spot for everything through Brandon/Emily's toast.
Hi! new to your channel, got recommended this video! Thats really unfortunate about the Worldhopper ball. Not only normal accessibility was flawed, but just looking at clips and the "escalator" you described at the beginning, those with actual disabilities wouldn't be able to participate for many reasons. For someone who wrote Rysn, I feel like that wasn't thought about in the preparation. Also with your comments on the music and volume of it, it sounds like it was like a "Worldhopper Prom" where Adolin and Shallan were Prom king/queen but actually they are in love. Also, anyone who gets anxious in crowds would not have a great time.
I'm certain there must have been alternate elevator access up that way as well. I think the convention in general was doing their utmost to make ADA seating and help clear and available. The very first thing I saw when entering the convention was a sign indicating where to get ADA help, so I know that's something they care about. I can't say for certain how the ball was from that end other than seeing comments from those who can't stand for prolonged amounts of time struggling.
Dragonsteel has an unfortunate habit of conflating "Insufficient communication" with "There's always another secret, isn't that fun?" Often their surprises really do add fun, but they often end up not giving enough information to set expectations correctly and I don't know if the withholding of information is deliberate or an attempt to replace a "we don't know yet" answer in a more fun way, but it's a pattern
An interesting point. I love a good happy surprise or mystery but this did create several unhappy surprises for people expecting dinner or a lower decibel of music at the ball.
Journey before destination. One of my favorite books that brought me inside was The Neverending Story, I particularly love the many chapters ending "But that is another story that will (shall?) be told another time," inviting the reader to continue the world outside of the explicit on-page canon, getting drawn in a way that can be almost as real as Bastian's experience getting pulled in
What a cool experience.
I get that everybody is trying to be optimistic and happy/grateful because being a sourpuss isn't a good look, but don't feel bad about telling it like it is. The tickets weren't cheap and the experience (not the performance, but the experience of not being able to see the performance) was subpar. It is what it is and you def shouldn't feel guilty over letting it be known very bluntly. Yes its their first event of this type, but the cover charge wasn't a 'we are new at this' price lol. Anyways I'm glad you highlighted that the music was probably Wit having collected music from offworld and lightweaving. I'm glad SOMETHING explained what they were thinking haha. Thanks for the video
I was optimistic that the "it's their first time" wouldn't be an issue when I heard they were bringing in an outside team that specialized in events to run it. That was what they needed to do, and it was a great call, so I was surprised when it went so poorly. I've heard that some issues around food and drink may have been because they had to use the caterers the venue offered, but the main issues of communicating what the event was, getting people in the room on time, the volume level, and making the experiential novella scenes visible seem like things that were more in their control, even if a challenge to think through/anticipate. From what I can tell, I believe the event team is really passionate about the source material and put so much work and love into it. That makes me feel more compassionate about their stumblings than if I felt someone was trying to make a quick dollar or pull one over on people. Being myself, a creative who dreams big and sometimes tries and fails is absolutely something that affects my views when only considering myself and my own disappointment. It sometimes makes me go easier on people than I do from a consumer standing. From that side of me I say to them, get up, dust yourself off, and try again! Learn and do better! From a consumer standpoint I'm much more harsh on it, especially for those let in super late, well after myself. So many people were terribly let down. I agree, it's alright to be open about the issues. The Wit lightweaving was a great excuse for anacranism, for that part, when I understood it after the fact, but why all the immersion breaking crazy music for the time before that as well?? Thank you for watching! I
journey before destination! Mine was Warbreaker <3 that's what brought me into this fandom
I still haven't read this one if you can believe it! It's on the hopeful list for this year though. I'm excited after your high praise. 😊
journey before destination!! Some of the first books that really brought me in was The Naming: The First Book of Pellinor. I honestly can't remember if I ever finished the series, so I might have to get on a re-read. But it was one of the first novels I read that really brought up the fact that women have periods, even in medieval style fantasy, it was just so much more *real* than any other fantasy I'd read yet. That's a big part of the reason I feel so pulled into the Cosmere - what with Brandon's use of mental illness and neurodivergence - even sex and gender! Also! My cosplay was a Mistborn worldhopper who had bonded a Cultivationspren, since we're speaking about OC cosplays 😄😄
Yesss I'm all about those OC cosplays!
Wonderful video!
Excellent feedback breakdown 🩵🩵 I was standing right next to Oceandiplomat and I felt so awful for everyone behind us... And I was every bit as disappointed in the music as you were. I loved the environment, they knocked that out of the park... But it wasn't what I thought we signed up for. Overall though Nexus was the highlight of my year and I regret nothing. They are growing by leaps & bounds every year, they care deeply about what they do, and I do think they are trying their hardest to innovate for the fans. It was a WONDERFUL time 🩵
I agree. I can feel such a genuine care for the fans. And I love the direction of adding themed events like this. I can't help but daydream about how cool they could be in the future with baited breath(while also slightly worrying they might all remain less immersive with details like the music to appeal to a wider audience. I'm a nerd nerd. Don't dumb down the fantasy escapism! Lol)
The first book that I really feel brought me "inside" was Forest Born, by Shannon Hale. I was dealing with a very serious bout of depression the first time I read it, and there were moments where the protagonist thought almost word for word the very same things I had said to myself. Going through her story alongside her really helped pull me out of that round of depression, and it was the first time I realized just how powerful storytelling, and especially novels, could be. It was actually the book that made me decide I wanted to be a full-time novelist. Still working on that, but as you say, Journey Before Destination! Also, the "spots prey" bit with Wit had me cackling! XD
Thank you for sharing your experience. I very well need to add this to my TBR pile. I have really enjoyed every Shannon Hale book I've read so far.
Thank you so much for the Dragon Woodshop & Dropoff spotlight! Fantastic recap video of all the DSNX stuff 💜

Here's our discussion after the official closure of the park. ua-cam.com/video/gOG0jt0ArFQ/v-deo.htmlsi=vrhZ3cDg6gWakC7r
This looks like so much fun, what a cool vlog!! I also super appreciate having quieter spaces at large events
You guys truly made this park special. Whatever comes next, I wish you all the best ❤
love this
This is an amazing video! I loved in Moon’s Rare Books not only was there mind blowing things getting talked too, but you would edit in explaining some of the small things we would see in the background. Really cool experience!
IT'S PERMANENTLY CLOSED. BUT I NEVER GOT TO GO 😭😭😭 💔💔💔 why did it close?

I am sad to hear about the closure, more sad to hear about the actors and employees experiences. We were only able to attend the park once back in 2021 and it was a fantastic experience. We live ~3 hours away in Vernal, Utah so the hours made it very challenging for us to make it out there more with our four kids. Several more planned attempts just did not work out. The interaction we did have in October of 2021 was great and all the cast were kind and engaging, our older kids had a blast (then 10 and 9) but the younger two had more challenges. We would have been able to attend more most likely if there were more hours earlier in the day.
NO WAY I WANTED TO GO 😭
Thank you, lots of good thoughts and ideas. It brought back memories and let me think of my good moments.
where's Jenny nickleson when you need her?
Here before Jenny!
Starwars took 7 months
1:12:20 Back in 2019 we actually did have security tell us in our safety briefings to break character for our safety. I just don't think that's enough. I think that alone is not accounting for actors freezing/fawning in uncomfortable situations. Self-advocacy is a skill that must be fostered and is hard to cultivate without the rest of the structure also advocating for employees. Fellow actors could help back things up, but only if they can actually *recognize* that something sketchy is actually going on.
Sad.
1:05:18 So here's the thing... even if I had liked Ken in a buddy buddy sort of way, I can't trust anyone who can't own up to their flaws pertaining to my relationship with them. My relationship with him was just Evermore, and he only doubled down about his mistakes regarding that... making them more than just mistakes. He put his blood, sweat, and tears into making it happen, I believe that 100%. But I think that only dismisses ignorant criticisms that Ken was just using Evermore to make a buck, not caring about Evermore. There is still a lot of criticism against Ken that has nothing to do with that. Not to mention his dream of Evermore is not the same as your dream for Evermore, and never will be. The bottom line is this: NO amount of money and effort and HEART and SOUL you put into a dream will justify how you treated people in the pursuit of it.
1:08:22 It's perfectly fine to be a highly-creative person with little logistical foresight! But you HAVE to learn to delegate, to develop trust with other people to contribute to your dream who DO have those logistical skills, that takes important interpersonal emotional skills that arguably anyone needs to participate and thrive healthily in community. Otherwise you're gonna surround yourself with yes-men and sycophants and you're gonna hurt people and double down on it, refuse to self-reflect, refuse to apologize, and much later go "how did it get to this?" but the damage will already have been done.
I expect this place will close indefinitely
It has closed permanently, yes.
