Hey, I'm Reese! Filmmaker and aspiring Bigfoot Field Researcher...
Papaw | Short Film
An elderly man goes about his day just like any other, all while keeping a close eye out for something to lift his spirits.
Written and directed by Reese Hayes
Starring Mark Yochum
with Brian Jones, Michaela Keating, Eric and Julie Swader
Gaffer and general delight to be around Anthony Peduzzi
VFX by Scott Swemba
Thank you for watching! This short has been a labor of love over the past two months or so. A really personal story that I've wanted to tell for a while, but never knew quite how to do it. I'm so fortunate to have been able to cast Mark Yochum as the titular 'Papaw' and could not have made the movie without the tremendous help from my friends Anthony, Scotty, and of course Mikey.
If you enjoyed the movie, please consider sharing or subscribing or just clicking around the channel to see what else I've made recently. Constantly working on new things and am excited to share more movies with you soon!

In May of 2022, after nearly 30 years of operation in Pittsburgh, The Climbing Wall closed its doors for good. I was there to document much of this final month with many of the people who helped make it one of the most special places I've ever had the privilege of working and spending most of my time at. After TCW closed and the new Ascend Point Breeze took its place, I felt the need to step aw...

A movie about two introverts who are set up on a "play date" by their concerned significant others. Thanks to my buddy Drew for making this movie with me. We had a lot of fun running around the neighborhood coming up with ridiculous scenes to shoot on the fly. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I hope you enjoy it too! Great work! You have some amazing short films! I am a composer working mostly in short films. It would be great to collaborate with you on a project sometime. Let me know if you would be interested. I look forward to seeing more of your work!!
Beautiful work!! Loved it!
thank you so much for watching!
I've also heard it called the Behinder.
boooring
I don't think that anyone really noticed but when he was talking how he considers them as squirrels and the camera was zoomed in, there was a black dot scurrying up the wood pole...
I live like 30 mins from coudersport
Psa: dont hike with earbuds in. Especially in the middle of the night.
Thanks so much for making this video. I've seen the basic story and the legendary photo of Dr Bentley's remains in so many 'Unexplained' books, so it's great to finally find out about the man himself, who he was and the life he lived. He sounds a hell of an awesome character, definitely deserves to be remembered for who he was and not just for his bizarre death. 92 was a very impressive age for him to live to as well, especially for a heavy smoker! RIP Dr Bentley, great video.
I saw one of these things before i swear. What I did was turned around, and walked away, ignored it. At the time I was just trying to pretend like I didn't see anything, but maybe thats actually why I made it home safe 😮
Glad you’re around to tell the tale!
I remember watching this video thinking it was real, then I noticed that the video was fake
FAKE?!?!?
I've seen the hide behind it was in the woods in California and what happened is I heard stuff behind me and when ever I turned around a tree had a black out line and the other trees didn't
SPOOKY!
Wonderful use of sound at the end. 👏
Beautiful work, Reese. Slice of life films are hard to pull off, but you nailed it. The actor was great too.
Thank you! Mark was seriously a delight to work with
Nice work, really subtle. The guy with the jacket/hoodie on the bus, he pops.
Someone should cast him in more stuff
@@DashingAgent yeah, I saw him taping his headshot to telephone poles the other day.
Nice work as always. Appreciate the lack of a score. Sophisticated. 🙂
Thank you! I tried a bunch of different things but in the end I really liked the documentary vibe
Addie vs Julian
This is so fake
WHAT???
My favorite movie I own in the criterion collection is fanny and Alexander out the ingmar bergman collection
I recently got the Bergman collection! Very excited about it
@@DashingAgent you'll love it
Good stuff!
Thanks!
Don't ever give up! Love you
Reeeeaaally loved the shot at 19:35
Thank you!!
Does that guy know you have a match against WWE / ECW Legend Rhino on June 1st?
His mom has to pick him up from Canada
This almost makes me miss my community theater days.... almost! I'm just kidding, I loved that time in my life, especially the improv acting games. ☺️ This has captured an emotion so perfectly, that emotion of tension and "God, I hope I get it!" (A Chorus Line joke, ha.) You all did A-mazing with your monologues 👏👏👏👏👏 I can smell the moth balls in my old prop rooms........ wasn't haunted though! That Dr. Evil monologue though 🥲
Thanks for watching Jenny!
Great documentary wish it was longer
Thank you for making this. I hope to have a community like this.
Thanks for watching!
I feel gutted for everyone who was a part of that gym. I hope the tribe finds a new place to thrive and tell stories.
My gym was like this all the way up to two years ago. One thing I love about the old Jen was all the all the holds. I ended up buying close to 3000 pounds of.Holds and they now live in my basement and on my homewall. This was rad! I would definitely check out this gym if I had the chance.
Thanks for making this. Alan is my dad and I spent a lot of my youth at there. It’s amazing to see the impact of the place he helped create. I hope the community is able to stay together.
Lots of memories of ealry morning bouldering when I was preparing for an ice climbing trip, gathering with the team before a mountain ascent or just seeing old pals in the top-rpoing area.
I came across this video trying to figure out what's with the horseshoes I've seen in some of the sidewalks in the area, but I'm still not really sure.
Yeah me neither
@@DashingAgent this is cool nonetheless. Such a beautiful area!
Beautifully told - you captured the heart of the story in a way that's relatable for climbers anywhere.
My heart. My soul. So wonderful yet so crushing to watch. The sound of the bell the fans the hum. Thank you for going through the emotional slog to lend some immortality to such a special place.
Thanks for being an integral part of what made it so special!
At least we still have climb north
It's heartbreaking to me that a new climbing gym would so immediately cause a local staple to close up. Thank you for this video. I've climbed at Cooper's and had no idea the area had been affected as such.
It's not Ascend's fault TCW closed. It was well known the owner of TCW did not care about the space in the same way the patrons of the gym did. This was the only game in town for almost 30 years. I loved this place and the only excuse it had for not succeeding was because of the owner.
I’m upset my local gym raised their prices 30 a month. Also told me their cameras weren’t working, when my bean mocs got stolen from the cubby.
Very interesting portrait of a place that I can only imagine wasn’t easy to fully capture. Bravo 👏
Thanks for watching!!
I can't even state how much I miss that place. Thank you so much for making this video.
I miss this so much. This was home. I loved climbing and working here. I made so many lifelong friendships. Thanks for sharing this! ❤
I miss this place so much. thanks for making this video, reese.
This was really cool! I really fell for climbing at TCW and miss it dearly.
Miss that place! 🥲🥹 Thanks for making it, brother!
I miss it too. Sorry it took me so long!
I definitely saw this once or twice in our footage when looking back, we walk the woods of Camp Hero in Montauk all the time. Trying to figure out if the legends have any Native American roots, or did they descriptions start with the lumberjacks in the early 1900s? Great video either way!
In the mornings, the 1st thing I do is put on UA-cam while I'm still waking up. Which is what I did with this doco & it was super comforting. Great work as always, Reese🎉
Happy to be a part of your routine!!
Beautiful documentary, captivating imagery, also it felt like you were telling me a story about a long life friend you had that I wish I could’ve met. Love seeing your stuff. I’m still waiting for cobblestone 2 tho 👀
Thanks for watching! It was a special place. Keep your eyes peeled…
Great gym. Still super sad that its gone. Lots of people still sticking together at the point breeze location
I’ve only climbed there a couple times, but every time I go it’s lovely to see so many familiar faces!
Love your work! Keep it going!
Okay fine! Just for you though :)
I'm always fascinated with contained stories, because they reveal a certain level of creativity and deep sensibility necessary to pull them off, - levels that bigger budget productions lack more often than not. Great work!
I’m a little late but this is beautiful work, well done!
Better late than never! Thank you for watching!
This was greet Reese! Maybe this sounds lame, but I really loved the setup and atmosphere here of a friend telling another friend a spooky tale. Like the approach is just great. It sort of grounds everything first, builds up suspense, and then lets it go wild at the end (which is also just a really smart move from a filmmaking perspective). As someone mentioned below, it really reminds me of Poe and many other early 20th century spooky tales I love. Well done!
Thank you so much! Not lame at all haha this is super appreciated :)
Glad to see you taking your movies seriously. You're a talented dude and deserve to be recognized. It's gonna happen Reese. I'll hold you accountable this year...right after I start holding myself accountable too lol

Great personality. I genuinely enjoyed you talking. Stick with it. You'll get big.
