FOR BEST RESULTS USE HEADPHONES!! A piece of retro-styled electronic music. This time accompanied by visuals from a 1974 scientific film illustrating 'Crystal Growth Morphologies'. Nice textural shift at 1:30 and again at 3:30. The reduction of density created the impression that the piece, led eventually by the cello, became itself by stripping off its layers of complexity.

      I thought this would be one of my typical 'Midweek Interlude' throwaways! An half-hour experiment with a cello sample and a bit of a mess about with a short demo on a drum kit I came across. Then Indulge myself with an early bit of film history! However, it seems to have caught some interest - not sure why??? Must give it some thought!!

      I think my approach to music/film was inspired by a classic rock music show on British TV which began in the early 1970s called 'The Old Grey Whistle Test'. It stood out by inviting proper rock groups/artists into the studio to play a live set. When a band couldn't come in, the track would be played against clips from old films. Initially, this could be as simple as using an early film in its entirety (as I have done here); later they got some talented individual to cut old film to suit the track. I would love to be able to get up to his standard which was superb!!!!

    First time watching your content. Pros: Interesting location certainly helps. I especially liked the part walking the path between the trees (1:18) and the scene (5:37) with the runner stopping leading into the pan shot to reveal the silhouette figure. Great use of silhouettes elsewhere too. I got a sense of time travel. Audio fitted well, great use of voices, delay/echo. Cons, (Art is subjective, so just my view): The cloak/pendant diminished the production value akin to AmDram. I'm sure the costume fits your narrative though. Camera following actors might have benefitted from drone or dolly for smoothness. (Maybe you chose more of a POV though). I think a splash of colour may have added to the overall intrigue, maybe to hilight a single object or just a random nothing of interest. Overall, great piece of work. Did you use lenses or was most of it done in post? Subscribed.

      Hello S.Wilson, many thanks for the time you devoted to the video and your detailed comments. I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint you!!! I'm an experimental musician who adds video to the music. So, in nearly all cases I use found footage, obscure material from which I select and re-edit. It is akin to sampling in the music world. So, the film you see was shot in 1969/70 as a graduation project by a film student and is feature length. It is called 'Stereo' - hence my title. I selected scenes, cut them together and added the bug-eyed lens effect. I was interested in creating an overall paranoid feeling with the music and enhanced by the film. I claim no background or ability in film, but do recognize how it impacts the music, making the whole more YT friendly!!!! You clearly have considerable knowledge about film and it was fascinating to read your observations!! I hope you are not too disappointed???? Or angry???

      Hi SH, never thought I would see the terms 'guitar shreddage' and 'proto-thrash metal' being used in reference to my music!!!! Off for another lie down!!!!

    Another brilliant piece. Hauntological, nostalgic, and creepily eccentric! How did you get those voice effects? That really made the piece.

      @MalleableSound 23 дні тому

      Hi, the mid-week interludes shouldn't be taken too seriously!!! It's basically a dumping ground for bits and bobs which didn't make it into the main compositions, or little ideas that amuse me. The latter in this case!! It is no more than a concept that I wanted to chase up! Work up a sample of minimalist music, turn a lecture into a piece of pseudo-scientific babble to contrast with the simplicity of the music, then add something cinematic which (wittily) speaks to the idea of minimalism!!! The voice effects: original sample, layered with re-pitched versions of the sample, bit of cutting and shifting of relative positions, odd bits of delay interspersed in the mix, and hey presto!!! Very time consuming but can turn out quite effective. In danger of over-using the technique (some pieces to upload), so need to step back and find other, more musical, ways to getting out of a tight corner in a composition!!!

    Wow, that's a shocker. That opening was a jump scare. Impactful, and awesome psychedelic noise guitar piece! Listening to this further, there are parts that are almost reminiscent of Penderecki and, to some degree, Xenakis. But overall, well structured and executed! Brilliant.

    Great video, BTW. And the mix of natural overtones with the slight deviance that makes it not quite so is incredibly effective!

    Oh yeah, I don't know if you're aware of the American film distributor Something Weird Video? They have all sorts of crazy old drug films, LSD films etc.

    for a moment there I thought you may have been quoting the Anthony Balch film Horror Hospital with Michael Gough, although this one looks equally intriguing. Great guitar licks on this track.

      @MalleableSound 26 днів тому

      Now you're talking!!! Anthony Balch is a very interesting character. probably the only filmmaker to straddle the experimental, commercial and exploitation fields!!!! The film I have quoted from is 'Vertige' (Canada, 1969). There have been a number of attempts to provide a score for the whole film! I, of course, am using the film to illustrate some music!!

    the introduction is more fascinating than the movie. This does have a certain minimalist chime similar that achieved by Steve Reich for example.

    • @MalleableSound
      @MalleableSound 28 днів тому

      Not sure what you mean by 'introduction'? My explanation of the piece on the channel page? The film started out as a concept I felt would support the music. As I cut it together I came to like it in its own terms, feeling it was becoming a proper 'materialist' piece of cinema - the sort of thing expounded by filmmakers like Le Grice and Gidal in the early 1970s!!!
