optimization got worse
I think what you see as a lack of information is more so an over-reliance on information. To completely rely on iggy's direction as if they were rule and it was your guide to get you through the game instead of it being general motivation to explore is kind of, not what is intended. It seems even late game you relied on it even though by then most players should have mostly disregarded it and explored the game independently. Discovery should have been your motivator, not some worm. The minimal UI also feels appropriate, breath being something you feel out and you seeing what you have in your hands instead of symbols telling everything make the game way too disassociated and precise, you dont learn, become and predict what happens to the slugcat, you just now use the UI And,, honestly,, your movement and lizard journal just sucks, completely misses the idea that you learn from observing instead of "oh heres a book you read up on your lizards!"
6:16 it’s kinda like old cartoons where all the cabinets will be background except for the one the characters open which have defined lines.
Cap. Elden ring and Black Myth Wukong exists.
Ive personally been enamored with the graphic fidelity of games like Battlefield 1, RDR2, and the two God of War games. You really get a clue of just how high fidelity it is when you zoom in on the *skin* of character models. The hair. The eyeballs, the fingers. Ragnarok doesn't explicitly look better than God of War (2018), but they had far superior face capture. Yeah, graphical fidelity is stalling out. Which was to be expected, honestly
The AAA companies - crocodile comparison at 3:00 made me laugh very hard! Epic!
Game graphics peaked 8 years ago is exactly how I feel about modern games. The other day, I was saying to my sister how the game graphics of 2018 compared to 2012 looked night and day apart. But when you look at 2024 vs 2018, the difference is noon and 20 minutes past noon.
Art style will always age better than something trying to be overly detailed. I think part of the reason games might look worse now is because developers are forgetting the techniques and skills to make an aethetic that is timeless.
I like that Doom Eternal looks more cartoony. The enemy design has improved drastly with more defined characteristics, which help define the different enemies and their roles better. My only issue is how they tried jamming in Ray-tracing.
RDR2 is peak for me. They didn't just increase pixel counts. They animated everything down to the horse's cold ballsack shrinking.
Maybe it's time we got back to basics: gameplay and fun, rather than boring open worlds.
I am done upgrading my PC to play games. I have been building my own rigs for a quarter century and the biggest reason I did that is so I could play video games. Every 2-3 years I built a new rig from the bottom up. Around 2013 something in me changed and hardware leaps slowed a bit. I ran an i7 3770 and an R9-290 for 7 years. I built in 2020 and started with a Ryzen 7 3700x and an RX 580 because video cards were nuts in price. I ran that until this spring when I bought a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and an RX 6800. I fire up a game and the game sucks so I shut it down and play an old game. This goes for most games for the last 4-5 years. I didn't need to upgrade to play old games. Assassin's Creed Black Flag is great. So is Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
A games graphics are only as important as the world they immerse you in. Games like red dead 2 or bf1 benifit from hyper realistic graphics bc the rest of the game immerses us into the dying west or the trenches of ww1. In the same way terrarias 2d pixel based style immerses is into a silly fantasy or top down pokemon from the ds era makes us feel like we're in a different world. Companies can make a game look as good as possible. It'll do nothing if the rest of the game can't immerse us. After all, games are a way to escape the real world for bits of time
i agree with everything exept the helldivers slander
An underdiscussed part of how games are starting to look worse is how we have taken skilled artistry in 3d modelling and texture art for granted to the point we only care about resolutions. Go look up a cool gun from a game released on the xbox 360, like the Lancer from gears of war then pull up a picture of a gun from like, Helldivers 2. Notice how, resolution and polycount aside, the old model looks infinitely better? It has more depth, the materials are more evocative, it looks like a thing in a world, and not a pile of polygons and pixels. Modern games dont have any god damn grit or grime to their textures, making them look unnaturally clean and just unfinished. They rarely bother with very simple yet effective techniques like painting in artificial shadows in recesses and corners, they dont do much realistic scratches, wear and tear. It is so often just the bare minimum of masking out a material region and hitting it with the fill tool to set the colour and material then leaving it there. Its all about time, making good, high quality hand crafted textures requires well paid professionals who have to take their time, that is expensive so they get interns to churn out the bare minimum in terms of artistic standards then exporting it in 8k resolution when the lack of detail means it may as well be a 256 texture. It was never fancy tech alone that made games look great, it was the hard work of artists who were once allowed to deliver their vision.
I know this isnt the most on topic thing for this video, but this just makes me kinda wish that stalker 2 wasnt made to look really realistic on ue5, the old looks and feel from the first 3 were really charming to me and what made stalker feel like stalker
I didnt realized the little yellow guy was lying to you about the location of your family
I think video games in general peaked in 2012 with Batman: Arkham Knight and Halo Reach
I don't buy new games anymore, last game was Crew Motorfest.
Comparing a first person shooter developed by a triple A company with a third person shooter developed by double A to make your point made me stop watching instantly
Not claiming I've played EVERY game out there but of the ones I have these 2 are the most eye pleasing: Farcry 6, The Division 2. Again, these are MY personal opinions. I'm sure there are others that are just as If not more beautiful.
You're a real one for including the game names in the description, I completely forgot about Signalis.
BF1 and BFV are my fav games of all time. After year and a half of GW2 I purchased a 32:9 monitor and picked up BF1 back up. The game is so immersive on a 49 inch screen that I feel like I have PTSD because I have dreams about Volga river. Also BF1 and BFV run with like 200 frames on my 3080 meanwhile BF2042 runs at 80 frames let alone Marvel Rivals that is at 60 FPS
Realism means nothing if the game isn't captivating
Funny...I can't find one game that looks as good as the best looking games these days. Hmmmm.
>rainworld music that's one way to give my shivers shivers
Imagine a BF 1 remaster
4:01 and that’s why I use SBCameraScroll
It's kind of like when advertisements push fancy new kitchen appliances with the 'latest technology' but a good ol' pan on a stove will get you the same, if not better results with a lot less hastle. I recently replayed Devil May Cry 3 (recently as in a week ago) and as I'm watching those shitty little 2005 cut scenes I'm thinking to myself that the graphics might not be polished or realistic, but the animation- especially on their faces- was somehow more expressive than games in the past 5 years, expressive in ways that only unrealistic animation can be. They had much more limitations the further back you go, and yet they did their best within their capabilities, and it paid off. Now, we can make things beyond what the average person's computer can handle, but it doesn't need to get to that point to be effective graphics.
2:46 Bro literally said go outside 😂😂😂
Companies are using more complex game engines but aren't creating much detail as before, where the game engines were "bad" but developers created much more details by hand...
half life 2 has horrible graphics by today's standards since it is 20 years old and yet the story and lore of it is so immersive that the game feels more realistic than many games nowadays
Every person that still buys triple(quadruple) A slop in the current year need to watch this video.
0:48 i love the clip of the demake of bloodborne 😭
just tourrent it, maybe they will learn someting.
I really really don't care about graphics i want gameplay over graphics..cause nowadays games look AWESOME but then you play and the gameplay is annoying ..
I will ALWAYS hate game developers completely slacking out on optimization as if a majority of gamers arnt running low-medium end setups
Battlefield 2, 3, 1 & Bad Company 2 are the best Battlefield games.
Helldivers 2 looks great if you dont set the graphics settings like that
yeah this guy is kind of a dumbass
I prefer games that have a stylized graphic. Now with the Stalker 2 release and me playing the previous Stalker Games since 2011 and Modding the shit out of them, Stalker 2 does not really feel like a Stalker Game, because its graphics are a standard Unreal Engine Graphic and doesn't have this depressive style that the old Stalker games had.
You want some jellybeans?
I was not aware Bloodborne was on PS1
It is the same with Battlefront 2. EA should be ashamed of how they abandoned that game like so many others.
Elden Ring's graphics look no better than any AAA game from 6 years ago yet the art style is so fantastic that it looks great. Elden Ring looks like a painting sometimes even though the graphics are dated
0:51 massive?
Imagine
@@dubya4409 if ninja
In 2 years RDR2 will become 8 years old,times doesn't give a f and flies like a falcon.
Star Wars battlefront 2 is still the champion in terms of realism
Nice anology with the croc :))
HD2 looks amazing
Ps2 graphics with modern computational power is what I want
