      The first one you listed is the true first pressing and I wish I had that one. I have the second one you listed and compared that in my video to the DCC, AP and original Monarch Mono. It's still my favorite, but the louder bass on side 2 is not as appealing in my opinion as the more organic sound on side 1. Some people prefer side 2 that way, but not me. I am happy to have my copy in the condition I have, but I would prefer the true first pressing as opposed to an early first that is EQ'd on side 2.

    It is impossible to understand how revolutionary Van Halen's first album was when it was released if you weren't around to be part of that experience. I clearly remember the first time I heard Van Halen, it was the summer of 1978 and I was 14 and hanging around outside the skating rink, a guy came cruising through the parking lot blasting Eruption on his car stereo and it was astonishing, sounded so fresh and futuristic compared to anything on the radio at the time. I asked him what is that band and from that moment on was a fan. Those that were raised on Van Hagar don't have that same perspective, by that time the music scene had evolved and most rock bands were influenced by Van Halen and had incorporated parts of that style into their own, so it's understandable that Van Halen wouldn't have stood out from the rest so drastically. Dave had attitude, he was cocky and funny, he was a great rock singer in the studio and in the early performances, people that say he never could sing have poor taste in my opinion, Sammy Hagar is a great singer but a very different one... he was great in Montrose and as a solo artist, I was also a fan of his, but when he got in Van Halen the dynamics of the band changed completely. His songwriting style is very different, he freed up Eddie to play more keyboards since he plays guitar too... although he is far from being in Eddie's league as a lead guitarist... and wrote mature radio friendly music and they were commercially successful.... but they lost their edge with him, they were already successful and had more success but it was built on what had already been accomplished, it wasn't starting out from scratch for any of them at that point. The first lineup had that hunger for success, they were driven, and on fire. They wanted to take over the world. The ultimate party band, it always sounded like they were having a blast. Listen to David Lee Roth's Eat 'Em And Smile album and then listen to 5150.... Dave still had that attitude and swagger, he was still on fire and put out a harder rock album in my opinion. Van Hagar was also great but personally I felt like Van Halen rocked harder with Dave and Sammy rocked harder as a solo artist then he did in Van Halen. Two completely different bands, even though only one member changed. A band is a sum of the chemistry of all the members, one new member can change everything.... and it did. I try to look at them as two different bands and not compare them. The first line up will always be Van Halen to me, the other is Van Hagar. Sammy's voice has held up better and he is a great artist in his own right but Diamond Dave is the alpha male singer when we're talking Van Halen.

    • @steveatvinylrecordnetwork4452
      @steveatvinylrecordnetwork4452 10 місяців тому

      Incredibly well stated, objective and fair. Two different bands in two different eras of hard rock with Eddie being the common denominator. As much grief I give Hagar, you can't blame him entirely if you are not a Van Hagar fan. Eddie changed a lot musically after Dave and felt the band needed to evolve. His musical direction was at the forefront of creating an entirely different band as much as Hagar joining. It was interesting with Dave back in the fold for A Different Kind of Truth that Eddie reverted back to playing like it was 1981 all over again. I guess Dave's talents brought out one side of Eddie and Sammy another. I respect all VH fans that like both versions. I bought the first 3 Van Hagar albums when they came out and broke down when Eddie passed and rebought 5150 on vinyl. It's hard for me to not compare the discography's of the two bands and see an enormous gap. I look at VH's first six as being as pivotal in Hard Rock as the first 6 from Zeppelin, Sabbath, Queen, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC. Van Hagar just seemed like any other band by 1988. Just my opinion of course, but it seems to be shared by the masses as I never see a VH album ranking that includes more than 1 Van Hagar album in the top 6.

    Great video, I have the ones you mentioned although my monarch is the one with the (m) on both sides, it also has a spelling mistake on "oher" instead of other on BOT. It's a great sounding pressing but l'm on my 3rd exact copy of that pressing and I just can't seem to find one that isn't noisy. I've had a vg copy and 2 vg +. All noisy. I would rank the DCC a hair above the MON but as I say I don't have a MON copy that isn't noisy. Being from Canada I also have a first Canadian press and it sounds great, it's clean and I would say it's pretty close to the top of the heap. The 45rpm is disappointing sound wise although the others in the series sound great.

    David Lee Roth was the glue that made VH the greatest heavy metal showband of all time...look at all the MTV copycat wannabes that tried to be the next VH. They were and are the ultimate party band. I think Roth wanted to keep the party going, and Eddie wanted to experiment. I think Sammy tried to find a balance, but ultimately Eddie got his way, and Sammy left too.

      All valid points. VH influenced many. Both Roth and Ed are responsible for that relevance. I believe that is the big difference between Roth and Sam in their prime. Everybody wanted to be Dave. I never heard anyone say that about Sam, but your right Ed wanted to grow up and Dave didn't want to play along and Sam deferred to Ed and the rest is history. Sam did get a bit of a raw deal at the end and the 04' reunion.

      @@tonycrabtree3416 true but Van Halen would not have been as successful with DLR. Even Ted Templeman who wanted Sammy Hagar in the beginning of VH days becaseu Dave was not cutting it vocally. Well, Ted says now that if he had done that Van Halen would not have been as successful as they were with Dave. Go read his book. It's all in there.

    I was and still am a huge Sammy Hagar fan...Standing Hampton, VOA, Three Lock Box are great 80s rock albums. So you can't call Sammy a hack. I think Van Halen ruined Sammy. The Van Halen brothers lost their mojo...Sammy didn't bring keyboards to VH...Sammy didn't make VH a pop band...Eddie did. VH became lame because Eddie let it happen.

      I respect Sam's solo career. I don't blame him 100% for how I feel about Van Hagar. I think VH is the best thing to ever happen to Hagar. Ed's writing suffered over time and he was no longer an innovator. Personally I think Roth brought out the best in Ed and those records with Roth are superior in every way to Sam's time in the band. Just my opinion.

    Great video Steve! Like you, I have Monarch stereo and mono pressings from 1967 with the Witmark credit on Whiskey Bar. The stereo pressing is exceptional, just like you say. The bass on Back Door Man shakes the walls when cranked. Almost like a LZ II Ludwig cut. Mine seems to be the reverse of yours, with (mon) etched on side 1 and (m) etched on side 2. Agree the mono just doesn't match the stereo, although an interesting listen.

      Nice assessment and thank you for watching. I do prefer the (M) side. Wish I can find one in great shape that had (M) on both sides. It is a little jarring to hear the EQ differences when listening to the whole album. Mono is interesting for Morrison's voice and Densmore's drums. Wish it was not so distorted.
