    Beautiful work! Do you typically need to do just one "burn" to help get the contrast in relief with the wood rings? Thanks!

    That's a very cool project. Also nicely edited. Not meaning to nitpick, but... I think the math part of that curve has been worked out by some guys (not me) to make the curve very forgiving. I saw you struggling around 8:00 to get just the right placing with the "on ramp" and wondered if that would help. Anyway, I don't mean to be critical, because it's an awesome project.

    Thanks for this! So cool! I want to try. Have lots of woodworking stuff, etc. Do a lot of chainsawing for local land trust as well. One main question: What does the BURNING step do? I assume maybe it accentuates the differences in contour / depth in the wood itself? Also, any tips on the PLANING step?

    • @lahaart
      @lahaart 8 місяців тому

      The burning creates a relief which makes the whole thing possible. Try to get it as flat and smooth as possible, then you will get a nice print.

      You can do either, if you burn the piece when it’s fresh you won’t have any cracks in the cookie, if you wait and let it dry, the growth rings will be more noticeable. Usually you want to be somewhere between 😉

    I use the size 1 and 1/0 Mustad hooks to freeline for snook ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzXmlErSqVAEGWFEKO530BvTqFDw53QW3 and they have been fantastic. The points are super sharp, and the hook is small enough to blend with my baitfish, yet large enough to land fish 30" or more. I also use these hooks when I'm pier or surf fishing with my kids. They tend to catch tons of smaller snapper, whiting, and catfish, and we get far fewer gut hooks with these Mustad in-lines, which means more of them survive after release. I was actually using these hooks when I caught my friend too, but I think that had more to do with the bait I was using ;-)

    • @lahaart
      @lahaart Рік тому

      Hey Dan. There are a few factors that come into place, type of wood, how old or rather how dry, and how thick. I try to get my tree cookies quite fresh, plane and sand them, put it in a place were I can keep an eye on them, as soon as I can see the first small cracks I burn and print them. If you wait to long the cracks are bigger if you burn them to early you won't see the growth-rings as nicely. Would love to see your prints.

    • @dangrc3671
      @dangrc3671 Рік тому

      @@lahaart Thank you kindly for your detailed answers. I do appreciate you taking time for that. While sometimes the cracks look nice, I'm trying hard to get the rings to show. At times, the rings are quite dense/thick. Sounds like quite the balancing act between too long/not dry/too dry/etc. : ) I'm also trying to dry with salt or acetone. Again, thanks. I'll send some images when I get a bit more proficient.

    • @lahaart

    If raising the log up and using the "ejectors" doesn't work then lift the log and put another log under the back edge so that the log gets forced down at an angle which will cause it to "twist" off.

    A quick tip for WD5 if you're working with a lot of dust - using a clean (new) filter and a vacuum bag (that doesn't mess up the filter right away) makes a huge difference in suction power. Dust kills power without a vacuum bag really fast and you can clean the filter as much as you want, you'll never get it as clean as it was. I haven't cleaned my filter in probably 2 months and I work with it all weekends cleaning brick and concrete dust. Before I was using the bag I had to clean it every 15min if I was cleaning a lot of dust.

    • @DamirUlovec
      @DamirUlovec Рік тому

      Indeed. And he didn't run that test with Parkside vacuum cleaner.

    • @lahaart
      @lahaart Рік тому

      But that's the point, with the Parkside vaccum you just don't need a bag and it works perfectly.

    • @DamirUlovec
      @DamirUlovec Рік тому

      @@lahaart You don't need a dust bag In Karcher either. They both designed for that. But it is much better for a vacuum cleaner if you have one. Vacuuming (dry) dirt without a dust bag and filter will destroy any electric motor of the vacuum cleaner in very short time.

    The wood is stunning! Especially the burning technic, wow!! However, the image doesn't fit right at all as the composition of the piece does nothing to draw the eye in. I'd be curious to see some more but find another artist to sketch an image or someone who can freehand a pattern directly on the piece.

I started carving in 2016, I was meh at it.. then I purchased a sweet dremel kit and practiced on pumpkins lol I'd cook the pumpkins or squash later.. then I'd work on soft wood, found out I didn't like the feel.. I'm good with maple and olive. Walnut is stunning. I stopped carving back in 2020 jumped to pottery just this year. My background is in fine arts, painting.. I left the commercial scene last year and I'm working on my own account. I'm gonna subscribe, but I wanna see more carvings!! ❤🍷 love from Montreal,Qc
