Grokking Ecclesiastes 3:12-13
Someone has called Ecclesiastes the weirdest book in the Bible. In this series of short devotionals we are on a journey to explore every line of the book from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes is one of the books in the Bible categorized as "wisdom literature." The Bible contains many different genres, different kinds of writing. While all Scripture is inspired, all writing is not the same. You do not treat poetry the same as prose. Ecclesiastes is an inspired monologue and needs to be understood from that context. Solomon (the alleged author of the book) takes us on a thoughtful journey, looking at life "under the sun," as if there is no God, compared to life lived with an awareness and awe of God. Much of the book strikes a pessimistic tone for the very reason that in those sections the author is looking for (and not finding any) meaning in life lived without God. Ecclesiastes is easy to misunderstand if we pluck a phrase here and a partial line there. Ecclesiastes urges us to see the meaninglessness of life without God and instead to turn to God and enjoy life. We can turn from emptiness to fullness with Jesus.
Pr Larry Kirkpatrick is the host of the Remedial Protestantism podcast, and has served congregations in pastoral ministry since 1994. He has authored books including Real Grace for Real People, and Cleanse and Close. He has been plenary speaker at symposiums and presented in many nations. In this sermon, presented February 8, 2025 at the Muskegon Michigan SDA church, Pr. Kirkpatrick walks the congregation through three issues: (1) How do you face the tide of incoming information? How can we be in the world but not of the world? (2) Is it legitimate for the leaders in a congregation (and a conference) to seek to preserve the pulpit for the delivery of God's truth? But what specia...

    Hi am concerned with your position on atonement base on confession and repentance, how does rom 2:4;and 11:29 related to the gospel as being the position of mankind (in Christ ) because ofhim birth, life, death, resurrection, now being our high priest in heaven are u saying that untill one repent and confess he or she isn't benefiting from Christ's salvation??

      @SanctuaryDoorMinistry 19 годин тому

      Everyone that’s ever lived has benefited from Christ’s salvation because He made grace available to all and gave every one of us time, a 2nd chance for humanity. But atonement is about God and man coming back together, so if one party decides not to, because of refusing the pleadings of the Holy Spirit to confess and repent, how can there be reconciliation? Every soul has free will and makes a decision either to avail themselves of the priceless gift or not to. And no one could ever repent if it were not for the grace of God which is broadcast to everyone that’s ever lived, but we still must answer that invitation and follow through with confession and repentance. Grace is the unmerited opportunity for salvation, and He's already decided to save any and all, but every one must make their choice too.

    Thank you for this video. I have a question. I am a orphan abandoned young. My adopter lady caretaker psychologically abused me growing up.(narcissm) In 2019 there was a time where I was doing therapy for this and cried hard because for the oppression. 3 months v later my adopted caretaker lady her only biological child died of suicide..I try not to think of it as my fault for crying. I know god is my mother and father. I've estranged from my adopters. Is my sister non biological in safe place? Was this a lesson for my adopters?

      @@sweetcd47 Do you mean of ask if the person who committed suicide is in a safe place? 1. God knows all the influences on every heart. It is possible that people would have severe depression that would distort their thinking and confuse their decision-making process. God knows all the facts there and He is a merciful Judge. Leave all of that with Him. 2. Your crying was an emotional release you must have needed at that time. There is nothing to blame yourself for there. 3. God would never unjustly throw away the life of one person to teach another person a lesson. 4. The dead are neither suffering nor conscious but await the resurrection. On that morning we will see His wisdom and His glory and that all of His decisions are merciful and right. God is love, and 1 Cor 13 tells us how He deals with all of His human children. Trust Him and in the end expect joyful outcomes. He is for you.

    I like that you promoted the start of each day and the start of this sermon with a focus on Gods Word. All else. All other decisions. Who we hear and how we hear depends upon the heavenly direction we are receiving through Gods Word. Gods Word is what allows us to test and prove all things as we are admonished to do. We need that Holy eyesalve. Yes, we are assailed by issues. We are assured that by their fruits we shall know them. I join with you Larry in exhorting us all to make the Bible our safeguard. It is the only direction finder we can truly trust. I like where this message went. I praise God for His leading in your ministry.

    Don’t forget Gamaliel’s cautions and warnings in Acts 5:34-39. The entire chapter is a good lesson regarding a straight testimony to the church that had killed Christ and didn’t want anyone to mention the blood on their hands. He reminded the council that if the apostles’ work was of man it would come to nothing. “But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.”

      @ that verse has also been running through my head frequently these days! 2 Corinthians 13:8. Just had to look it up. Actually, I think the entire book of Acts is the battle between Suppression and Sunshine which we also call the Great Controversy. I believe the fires of persecution are warming up as God is raising faithful voices to challenge the dominant narratives in the world and in our church. May God help us be faithful unto death… if necessary. I appreciated your sermon.

    This was odd as you appeared to question why someone would offer such huge amounts of money (acknowledging political nature of some of the humanitarian focus). Yet you assured us that SDA are not compromised in being able to sound our Three Angels Messages commission while undertaking this directed spending. I am not so persuaded as you are by the response you received. I believe compromise and mingling has occurred. I question the wisdom of our leadership, just as I have questioned the refusal to address clear and deliberate apostasy in the church. I stopped attending when I was forced to receive from the pulpit directives that the Bible does not mean what it says, that men such as Paul wrote from their personal bias when the Word tells me Holy men of God wrote as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Fundamental Belief 1 having been negated as a prime teaching in our churches. It seems the majority of our Pastors are prepared to turn a blind eye to obvious corruption. Since when did we find it acceptable to mingle with the world’s systems. We are to be in the world and not of it.

    • @LarrytheguyfromMichigan
      @LarrytheguyfromMichigan 4 дні тому

      I appreciated the response such as it was. I shared it as a point of interest. More detail would have been preferred. I am open to the idea that the response is incomplete or even wrong, but I do not start from a position of distrust. No doubt there are both ungodly and godly actors within the church organization. I am not ready to receive an accusation against an elder without requisite credible witnesses (1 Tim 5:19).

      @@LarrytheguyfromMichigan Thank you. I understand where you are at. I wonder sometimes if within leadership and the pastoral ranks and more built up areas there is a bubble which prevents those inside from truly observing and recognising the widespread damage that has been occurring to Gods people. False teaching drives truth seekers away . Even those of us who believed we had tested and found doctrinal truth within the Adventist movement. When our church ditched Gods headship principle it ditched wisdom, not just concerning male and female but the type of men to be selected, heads of households, proven men of character and faith, not educated men programmed in seminaries to degrade the Bible through human reasoning. This is a direct departure from Biblical directive. So much is wrong. So few seem to care. So many have been wounded. So many have fled. So many refuse to meet head on and challenge all these misdeeds. Is it the comfort of the pay roll? Is it the absence of wisdom? Who will be the Nehemiahs who will mend the breaches? I ask this as one who has tested and has seen the corruption and who watches all this feeling extreme grief for the beautiful truth I defied my friends and family to come in to. Jeremiah 23 “Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. 2 Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord. 3 “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. 4 I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord.

    We are to submit to authority when appropriate, but I'm concerned that we don't take a knee-jerk reaction to being labelled as helping illegal immigration and stop doing what God may want us to do. I remember that our church before it was even organized was helping the 'illegal immigration' of the underground railroad in helping slaves escape the US into Canada. EGW even told us to not obey the laws demanding escaped slaves be turned in and we had early pioneers that went to jail as a result. So let's check to make sure we're doing what's right in God's eyes and if we are, then not worry what label society puts on it.

    Sadly, i fell for it as my pastor pleaded i accept. Afterward i continued studying trying to find any instruction for women being elders. None whatsoever exists. I overheard at a campmeeting that pastors were strongly encouraged/told to appoint women as elders and also even very young women. I stepped away. At tge time i had heard no one effectively preaching on this until about a decade ago. Oh was i tearful with joy to finally hear a preacher taking a strong biblical & SOP stand. We are in need of men... "The greatest want of the world is the want of men-men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall. But such a character is not the result of accident; it is not due to special favors or endowments of Providence. A noble character is the result of self-discipline, of the subjection of the lower to the higher nature-the surrender of self for the service of love to God and man."

      The underlying Greek is the same for KJV or NASB; the word in verse seven in KENOW. The literal reading is that Jesus “emptied” Himself. He was in the MORPHN of God (verse 6) but He took the MORPHN of man (verse 7). In the beginning (John 1) He was God-in particular the person Jesus, and never stopped being God. However, in God’s incarnation mystery He chose to limit Himself to the attributes of man. My KJV also days at Hebrews 2:14 that “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.” So while He has been God for the entirety of His existence from eternity until now, He chose to lay aside certain attributes of deity in order to achieve the purposes of the incarnation. 2:14 shows that He also laid aside the attribute of immortality in order to be able to die for us. What an amazing live He has for us!

    A religion that leads men to place a low estimate upon human beings, whom Christ has esteemed of such value as to give Himself for them; a religion that would lead us to be careless of human needs, sufferings, or rights, is a spurious religion. In slighting the claims of the poor, the suffering, and the sinful, we are proving ourselves traitors to Christ. It is because men take upon themselves the name of Christ, while in life they deny His character, that Christianity has so little power in the world. The name of the Lord is blasphemed because of these things. MB 136.4

The SDA church now accepts the Jesuit new age bibles and rejected the Textus Receptus.

    As a kid, I heard Ellen White from the pulpit and school (went to actual grade school at the same church I attended). Some things I heard from her were clear to me that there would be a "remnant of the remnant." To me, it was a fact, still IS a fact, and made/makes perfect sense. Not every SDA will be saved because SOOOO many are in apostasy. I hear and see a lot of people in the conference teaching there will be no remnant of the remnant, hold on to this "ship," it's the one that will take us safely into harbor. This information, that you 3 have presented, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that there WILL BE a remnant of the remnant and that this ship, as it stands, will sink and NOT go into harbor. That is why, when I tell people I'm SDA, I make sure they understand that I am a true SDA based in the original beliefs, not the current apostate one. Sad that I have to specify that.😢

I don’t get what ppl think when EGW says it will be worse than the persecutions of the past and the doors of our churches will still be open??? 🤣. That’s the number one teaching of Roman Catholicism. That there is no salvation outside of the structure and church infallibly 🤷‍♂️. EGW said Many Times over the years that the GC did not represent the will of God and hadn’t for many years. She always used a small “C” when she said the church goes through never a capital “C” I’m just now learning about the trinity controversy but have believed Mrs White’s comment on the Statutes in 1BC for many years. “They were Not shadowy types to pass away…” The statutes and Moedim of Dan 7:25 are obviously the 4th Angel to me.

    That’s quite an accusation you are all making, that people who work for ADRA, or any NGO are inherently political and are of dubious character. And further that they’re are not doing the work they do out of the goodness (the word used here though was sweetness) of their own hearts. So in one foul swoop, you’ve evicerated any person who works for ADRA. You’ve used some great quotes here but how about this one. James 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this, that you visit the orphan and widow in their distress, and to keep yourself unspotted from the world. So, the HS in speaking through James says, to relieve the wants of the poor BEFORE you look after yourself. Further to this, the HS through Matthew in chapter 25 says that God separates the sheep from the goats on his return according to who they say they are and their works. From the pontificating here the suggestion is, I can only help those if I lead them to Christ. Given that we are in the time of Laodicea and most people struggle to think of correcting their own characters let alone helping out the poor, what am I to do? This panel says that I can’t help others if it’s linked to the government. Further to this, this panel says that anybody who works for an NGO is of dodgy/sketchy intent. Which is in fact bearing false witness against those who work for ADRA who believe that they are being the hands and feet of Christ. You would be better served preaching the three angels message, or rather, being the three angels messages , rather than sitting here and misaligning those who are out there on the frontline helping others. I work for ADRA. What you’ve done here is called into question everything I am about to do today, despite the fact that I’ve started my day with prayer, SoP and the Bible.

      I haven’t watched this video yet, but will do so later. It popped up in my feed and as it began with the introductory, I scrolled the comment section and saw your response. My wife and I have been long term supporters of ADRA. But after I seen this pop up in the news this past weekend, I’m now concerned in the direction it is headed. I don’t think the issue is about helping others, but rather supporting illegal activity. I would expect this from the Catholic Church, but to find that we are somewhat doing the same thing is very concerning. SOP makes a statement about Christ and the Roman authority. I can’t recall where it’s found right off, but just paraphrasing here. She said that even though Christ knew of the corruption, he in no way interfered with the authority. There was absolutely nothing that he could be found guilty of. Not even law breaking of the government authority. So to see us tied to this doesn’t look good for our church. You can always help the poor without getting involved with criminal activity. You can also find in her writings that many will bring a time of trouble upon themselves before the actual time comes. Look at now how many are going to see us as this has now become public awareness. But of course we were pretty much lock and step with the Catholic Church on the vaccine mandates as well. Ezekiel chapter 8 and chapter 9 is becoming more clearer as I see these things happening in our church. SOP says that the Old Testament prophecies are more for our days than it was for theirs.

      Troubling indeed, we must give assistance to the oppressed, but through private personal donations, we soiled ourselves with govt $$ during Covid now this with ADRA, to be part of the UN is unseemly for SDAs who know what the earthly power breakers have on their agendas, when the Sunday law is issued and enforced , how will we explain ourselves after the history of going along to get along? Tithe funds can certainly be used to ease suffering AND give the biblical message of hope that evil WILL be ended. My heart breaks for the immigrants who have been here as productive honest folk and are now targeted, that same vitriol will be heaped upon faithful 7th day worshippers
