    How well did the knurling tools hold up and where did you find them? i have 1/4 inch stainless rod I am using to install ball bearings into my model train engines. The factory shaft was knurled to hold the wheels on via press fit. I need to knurl this SS Rod. Would a tool such as you made do the trick. This is a hobby shop not a big company so buying $500 knurling tools or a lath is not in the cards. Thanks Dennis

      Hi, the homemade tool needs a minimum size of 15mm to work, but you could try to build one with a smaller pipe cutter, that could do the trick. I got the knurling wheels from Aliexpress and they are holding up fine, but I use them not very often, once all Handles on my tools were knurled I ran out of pieces to use it on.

    Okay, rule 1 with files - keep them apart!! Files touching file was a sound that made the man who taught me file work instantly materialise at my shoulder and give me the "look". Really, file against file is a bad idea, not just wear but also, depending on the temper of the files, the possibility of breaking or chipping the teeth. For general filing this is not so bad, but with a good single-cut file used for final draw filing to a finish, or the old fashion grain finish off a file, the file must be in perfect shape. All files should be handled separately and stored in a closed space (drawer) none touching (mine sit in slots) with some sort of protection of the metal, I use paraffin oil diluted with a mineral spirit, rust is the enemy. Do not try to sharpen them with acid or vinegar, they will be further damaged. They may feel sharp, but the acid has etched the metal so that feeling of sharpness is just a rough surface. A file is a cutting tool, not an abrasive tool. If they feel dull, clean them, if not carded and cleaned after use, the gullets and just under the cutting edge built up "crap". Initially, I clean a newly acquired used file in a very strong caustic solution, it does wonders.

    • @wefalck
      @wefalck 3 роки тому

      I would recommend to browse mb.nawcc.org/forums/horological-tools.13/ for advice on how to adjust the bearings on a watchmakers lathe. They have to properly tightened with tommy-bars or C-spanners - never ever with a wrench ! This goes through several stages, as the spindle slightly expands when run. So at the beginning it has to be just a tad tight. Bearings cannot normally replaced, unless one has some serious maching capabilities.

    you need to tighten up the gib screws on both cross slides to give you a better finish on your part. check also the bearings on the headstock for play there must be no play at all. you also need to accessorise your lathe for it to more useful, like a set of collets, a face plate, drilling chuck on the tailstock for a start. otherwise good job. need to oil the headstock bearings every time you use the lathe.

    • @friemeldudesworkshop5929
      @friemeldudesworkshop5929 3 роки тому

      Thank you for all the tips! I will try them out, the next time I am working on the lathe. I am constantly looking for more accesories for the lathe. But at first I am limited to the tools that came with the lathe. As I already wrote in another comment, the bearings on the headstock are pretty worn out, so there is not much more tightening possible. To keep the headstock properly oiled all the time, i will install some oilers soon to prevent further damage

Concentrate on a few of the more interesting aspects of the work and show this at normal speed, telling us what you're doing, why you're doing it that way and what products you are using for the work. Of course, choosing which aspects of the work to show is a skill that distinguishes skilled content providers from the rest.

    I've heard some talk about how it is often difficult to restore old watchmaker's lathes back to a point where they can make high precision components. Based on your experience with this, do you think that this lathe is capable of making watch components requiring that kind of precision? Thanks for posting!

    • @friemeldudesworkshop5929
      @friemeldudesworkshop5929 4 роки тому

      I have to admit, that the bearings for the main spindle are quite worn, so to make precision parts with the lathe, they will need to be replaced. For a little playing around and hobby stuff it´s okay, but replacing them is on my to-do list. I just need to find the correct dimensions for the replacements, since measurements on the worn parts are impossible to get. The other parts of the lathe are really accurate and i would guess with the collets blanks for watch gears are doable. Not on the first try, but with a little effort and learning on the operators side definitely. If you have any further questions, let me know. Thank you so much for watching and posting the first comment here!

    • @bobloblaw7879
      @bobloblaw7879 3 роки тому

      Its the spindle bearings that can be issue. A precision plain hydrodynamic bearing, which most 8mm are (boley ww83 would be an exception), could last for ever if properly oiled. If not, you get metal to metal contact, and its the beginning of the end. The biconical shape is about the most difficult thing imaginable to machine. the cones are relatively easy, but getting them to meet at the right diameter that is a real challenge/near impossibility. In addition, the require a lapped finish.....so CNC might address the biconical challenge, you still need a way to lap them. That's only half the battle.....as the shaft and bearing must mate perfectly! The manufacture accomplished this with specialty fixtures and dedication setups/machines. Because of these difficulties, no one can or is making replacement parts.....when they are done, they are done.

      Oh! Interesting! I did not expect that the bearings are so complicated to make, but that explains why no one is offering replacement parts. Do you have any furthr information on how these spindle beaings were made and fitted? I would like to learn more about that.
