This video goes over a persistent hard start issue when starting this bike for the first time of a day. The rest of the day it starts fine. This maybe a possible fix.

What causes this I have the same issue why does it happen?
The issue is very common on many generations on the R1 and it´s almost always corrosion in the starter relais. Replacing it will most likely fix it and it will start up just fine again. 😉
where is the regulator on this bike
under the main seat, near the rear shock. its bolted by two bolts to the frame
Hi joe did this solve the problem.I have a 04 5pw .with similar issues.have to prime the pump a couple of times .a hold and release the starter button a couple of times(saves cranking the arse off it ) .not one issue when warm
My 03 r1 has no spark nd I just a rebuilt the engine the starter mortor was fucked up nd I jumper the battery while trying to force it to turn over could I have killed the ecu doing that
So u didn’t have spark befor u did that
What's that piece called where the ground and positive is connected next to the battery
Where is that 50A fuse going to on the left side of your battery? I just bought an 02 r1 and that fuse was disconnected and my bike wont start so curious if that may be the issue.
I just got an 2002 r1 and also same issu new pump everything works but nothing just cranks
Same I’m stumped
Mine is 2003 with 6k for mileage it sat for over a year but has brand new battery & turns over but won’t turn in 🤔
Same issue here but it’s an 02 did you end up figure in fit out? I’ve read some things about a speed relay wire burning up but I’m not sure
Same here 2002 r1 have you guys found out why won't start
Hi ,thanx for your video, did you have any issues afterwards ,or did this solve the hard first start issues for good?
I would be interested to know this too. Would also be great to have a video showing how to check the ECU ground to see if you have this issue.
i cant find that ground under the tank, could use some help
is it the same jack with that black cap under the tank
The connnector is behind the frame rail just under the tank, on the inside of the frame. Remove the front tank bolt, rotate the tank up, and you’ll see it. It looks like a square block with a bunch of small black wires terminating into it.

Can you still clip your helmet to the bike
Ware can I get the back bracelet
The bag support bracket to keep it out of the rear tire is a v star 650 custom bracket. The J bracket is a Harley exhaust bracket. It might be linked in one of the other comments.
Where can get the bags at and brackets.....
I have been looking to get some luggage on my 2015 VStar 250 and your videos have been beyond helpful, thank you.
I'm having a hard time with mine too. I can't find the bracket that you reference in the instruction?
Which bracket you after?
@@usernameandpasswrd The Harley one- but I just found them on Ebay of all places- thank you again for the tutorial- I have been banging my head trying to figure out how to put bags on this bike
Awesome! Probably the best solution I've found so far. Thanks!
One Amazon review suggested bending the 650 support bracket instead of using the exhaust hardware. Any thoughts? Also, is it possible to adjust the saddlebags so they don't hang so low? I plan on relocating the turn signals back.
I used the 650 bag prop rod and did have to bend it out to get the bags to sit straight. The bar doesn’t stick out as far as the shock when mounted. The bag will rest against the shock at the front. You can draw the bags up tighter if you like. You’ll have to use a different set of holes in the bag straps than I did to get them to sit higher. You’ll have to watch about getting the bags too high. They tend to pull away from the bottom of the support and start getting this weird angle tipping away from the bottom. You can likely tie them down to the bar with the furshished Velcro straps with the bags so they don’t do that. Relocating the blinkers is a good mod for the bags and gets them out the the way so the lid opens better. Try taking a look at moving them back around the taillight. You may want to throw the bags on when the turn signals are off, then eyeball the best spot for them before drilling holes.
Great video, Thank you.
This is very helpful, THX. Just bought a 2012 V Star 250 and appreciate your input.
where did you get the chrome (J) mounts? You called them muffler clamps. I am trying to mount bags on my wife's 250 and my issue is the distance between the shock mount and turn light. It looks like you fixed it with the chrome clamps. are they EMGO products? Cheers!!
+Scott Tominski The J bracket was a harley exhaust mounting bracket. I dont remember what site I ordered it from. It wasn't an emgo part. I'll look through my other PC and see if I can find a link for it. I did look around for it on the net but didn't see it. The bracket below probably will fit the bill though. It has about the same dimensions of offset, hole spread, and hole size.. The 650 hanger for the bags can be sprung around to match up. You will have to open the hole a shade for the stalk as it's a shade bigger than 3/8". The J bracket had to have the hole opened up as well. www.jpcycles.com/product/4400285
+Richard Litten I did find the offset Exhaust strap and I might go that way. The (J) mount looks so much better :) I will give my Harley dealer a call see if they can help out. Cheers!!
Actually it's wv. My wife is in front.

Actually, you can get soft bags that fit perfectly without all the hassle of ripping the bike apart and moving hardware. ua-cam.com/video/4ZXyUPqT-8M/v-deo.html
I've seen your video and while the bags are tied on well, the strap over the seat and the strings take away from the install. I wanted them to appear just as they should on the bigger bikes, with the rear seat usable. Your video did have me thinking. There's not too many installations on VStar 250s. Of course, the wife wanted more storage so it now has a bag on the seat as well. It is quite the luggage hauler. :) We remove it on occasion to haul the grandchildren, they like to ride. :) How's that back seat to sit on and leg position for a rear passenger? Ours rides fine with no interference from the bags.
Richard Litten I get it. I did consider mounting my bags under the passenger seat, but decided I liked them higher up. I also considered getting the sissy bar so I could bungie a bag off that, but couldn't cost justify it since I really had no need or desire for lugging much more around than what you can put in a fanny pack. But on to bigger and shinier things now, mine just got put up for sale today. Hope I don't cry when it sells....
lynnetto You're going to miss it when it's gone. :) As cheap as these are to insure and drive, I'd keep it. They are fun little bikes. We have 6 bikes and I'm adding a new one to the fold this year. Nothing wrong with having more than one. ;)
Does they effect the passenger and does it work with a sissy bar
I've ridden on the back with the bags in place. Your legs go right around them without any problems. The sissy bar fits just fine with the bags on it. You can see the sissy bar on the bike in this video. ua-cam.com/video/67T_H4amXKo/v-deo.html
You know you can move the rear turn signals further back on the rear fender? So that the saddlebags can fit in the center of the side of the rear fender.
He says in the video that his wife specifically asked him not to move the turn signals.
Thanks Rick for a good video. Just wonder how did you get the rear Harley brackets in. Did you dismantle the whole rear signals in pieces on both sides or just pulled all the wires out and inserted them again through the bracket. However, your installation looks damn good.
Sorry if I missed your message. I pulled the whole turn signal off. Theres a wire that comes out the turn signal and plugs into the bike harness a little forward of the shock and there is also a small metal tab bent over to keep the wires out of the tire. Unplug the wires, remove the nut, bent the tab just enough, and extract the turn signal stalk. Thread the wire through the harley bracket hole, throw your rubber shim in if you want, and bolt everything back up. The stank is long enough to take the bracket.
Great video!
If your tank bag is a cortech, it may be a shade in your way if it's a big 1.8 like mine. I got her a smaller one but the way it sits slanted on the tank, may look a little odd. She won't use it. Says it gets in the way of the handlebars (hers are pull back bars)
f you have to slide it forward. it may hit you in the butt while driving and become annoying. You can get the straps to the very edge in the rear of the seat and still clear ok, but the first strap must be able to pass under 1.5" back or further back to clear the front seat mount and lay straight. Let me know if you have any more questions. :)
The seat pad measures 7"w by 8" deep. Due to the position of the bracket under the seat, there's only a 6" area under the seat to place the straps. Try sitting the bag on top the seat where the front edge of the bag it at the front edge of the seat. See if the straps are in the right spot to go under it. If it is, you can shim the seat as I did to get the straps in.
I have looked all for brackets and saddle bags for my 250. Husband is tired of carrying everything. I do have a question. I was told at the Yamaha shop there was 2 different versions of the 650 mounts. One is the classic and one is the custom. Which did you use?.
Very low res!! booo!
Thank you
Yep just a standard round bag from the dealer.
I really like the bags your wife has, wonder if I can get em too. There's a cycle giant near my work. The glasses bag, was that from the dealer?
See my other video showing the completed install :)
If you look closely at the signal stalk, youll see a grommet between the bracket and the fender. I may not have mentioned that in the video but that is another 'straight off the shelf' grommet from lowes big enough to fit the stalk bolt. Its there so the bracket isnt bolted directly the fender so it wont tear up the paint I did also have to notch the J bracket on the back with a dremel. Once you take the turn signal off, youll see a dimple on the fender used to keep the stalk from spinning aroun
Bags were bought at the local motorcycle shop. Id stay away from teh slanted ones. they look cool, but the storage sucks cause the slants eat up room for big tall items. The wife loves them. I even got her a little round bag that straps on the front shock legs under the headlight and she carries our night glasses and keys in it. :)
1. The only issue I see come up was whether the brace was pulled far enough away at the bottom to keep the inside of the bag from grazing the lower shock bolt head. A simple pull on it gave it more clearance. :) 2. I wouldve liked to move the turn signals back by the tailight but I was under strict orders not to move them. Other than that, no. 3. 12"lx9"hx7"w. I can call the dealer tomorrow and see if they know what I bought if it helps. They weren't anything special, just 'off the shelf' bags.
thx so much for your informative video. i have a vstar250 and want to know: (1) have you had any issues since install? (2) would you do anything different? (3) what are the measurements/specs of the saddlebags you installed (4) where'd you get them, they look perfect. Thanks for everything!!
Hi-Thanks for your informative video. I have a vstar250 and want saddlebags too. Have u had issues since install? Would you do anything different? Very grateful for your help.
