Reflecting Back on My Journey to Becoming An Ironman
Over the last 10 months, I've dedicated countless hours to training, going from no experience to doing my first Ironman.
The journey's coming to an end and figured it would be a nice opportunity to reflect on the journey and see how far I've come.
We often aren't able to see the progress we make in life when we look at it daily, that's why reflecting can be a good thing.
It's pretty crazy just how far I've come in under 10 months of training, going from barely knowing how to swim, not owning a bike, and improving my run.
It's been a great journey so far, looking forward to how my Ironman goes, and what I plan on doing in the future.
If I had to say anything if you're on the fence to doing an Ironman or really anything, just do it. You'll learn how to do it along the way. You'll never be in that spot where you're completely ready. Giving yourself that deadline forces you to make it happen and learn. That has been a big lesson signing up taught me.
I want to thank everyone who has tuned in on this journey and appreciate all of the support.

1 Week Out From My First Triathlon: Ironman Lake Placid
Переглядів 1803 місяці тому
After approximately 10 months (mainly 4-6 months) of giving my training everything I could, I'm now just a week out from my first triathlon, which is Ironman Lake Placid. I've finalized all my gear, got my new helmet, and race day shoes, and just bought a new wheelset, so I'm all prepped and ready for race day! I would say that I had three stages in my training block. The first 4 months were ju...
I Almost Ruined My Ironman Chances Because of This

I'm going from no experience to completing an Ironman and recently decided to listen to my body. It's terrible timing and I didn't anticipate, nor want to make this video, but over the last week or so I have been dealing with some soreness in my knee. I normally run through the pain but being only a few weeks out from my Ironman, after training nearly every day for the last 8 months, I figured ...
Ironman Race Rehearsal Prep: Bike/Run Workout

Less than a month till my first Ironman, going from no experience to competing in Ironman Lake Placid. This week on the training plan I had a race rehearsal bike ride and a race rehearsal run off-the-bike. This would give me a really good idea of where I currently sit and what I can expect. I was to practice race day nutrition, aim for the same terrain, and decided to wear my race day fit. For ...
Testing Wetsuits to See Which Is Best: Roka Vs. Sumarpo

I recently got a new wetsuit from Sumarpo and decided to put it to the test against my Roka wetsuit. My Ironman is a month away and want to put up the best possible time, and wearing the best possible wetsuit that makes me the fastest is the goal. If I'm able to gain seconds, if not minutes in a different wetsuit, that could be a big difference overall. I decided this would be a good test to se...
First 100 Mile Bike Ride During Ironman Training

My peak training is here and with that, means my first 100-mile ride in my journey from no experience to completing an Ironman! I wasn't guaranteed to hit 100 on this ride as it was time-based, but based on my previous sessions, I had a pretty good idea of where I would be at. Felt good on this ride and the rides I've had since. It's wild to look at how far I've come from when I first started o...
My First Recovery Week In Ironman Prep

On my road going from no experience to doing an Ironman, before I had a training program, and while I was in Tucson, I didn't prioritize recovery days or weeks. Now with my new coach and training program, there are recovery weeks bui...
How Much I Spent Training For An Ironman in Tucson

During the winter, I decided to make an impulse decision and move to Tucson, Arizona to train for my Ironman. The main goal was to train as much as possible outside while I was there and get to experience living somewhere else - which I would say I achieved. Over my time there, I decided it would be interesting if I kept track of all my expenses to see exactly how much this trip cost me. This i...

I’ve never run a marathon but something similar happened to me last year when I ran a half marathon. I wasn’t well rested. After about 7 or 9 miles, my feet started feeling heavy. Like my shoes were made of bricks, my hips were killing me, my lungs were on fire and I just had an overall bad time. Somehow I managed to finish in 2 hours.

One thing that people overlook when it comes to running that I myself overlooked for years (I’m 26 now) is that your posture, form and running technique all play a factor into how far you can run without fatigue or pain. Another thing that people over look is stretching. Stretch your lower back, sides of your back, essentially your whole back. Stretch before AND after you run and workout.

The day I bought my FR965 is the day my Apple Watch retired. AAPL has always been an overpriced product…. I had series3, series5 and series7. The 7 died on me earlier than 5 & 3. Wanted to try ultra. But was hesitant to go back to Apple considering price and value. Thought I might as well try GARMIN. No regrets. I used Apple mainly for fitness tracking, and GARMIN way surpass it. And the long battery life meant it can better monitor the sleep.

@@BassilAlamoodi-y9l Yup, I used it all the way up to Lake Placid. I ended up signing up for Penticton the following month. I wasn't able to make it an "A" race and didn't give me a good build to it, but I contacted support and they changed it for me. I think it's a good training platform, but it's a very cookie cutter training program. A lot of the same workouts for everyone, so it's not personalized that much for you, but if you're just looking for a training platform and not think about your workouts, I highly recommend it. If you want personalized, they have coaches or I would say find a coach.

Interesting how relatively low your HR was during the whole race yet you felt like it was hard. Maybe your watch isn't tracking it properly? Watches aren't as accurate as chest or arm strap, but this seems way off. It seemed you were in easy zone the whole way?

Do NOT run a full marathon in training - that is long-held standard advice. You will be more prone to injury, you will need a long recovery time which will impact your training schedule for the next two weeks, and you will get burnt out. NO respect for you, training wrong and not even smart enough to get the correct day. Thumbs down. I have done 29 marathons and was always smart enough to show up on the correct day.

I'm amazed at how many times I hear this- "the eco-system of Apple products you can't beat". You yourself expressed the problems that you were having with the Apple watch at the beginning of the video. All of my friends with Apple watches have bogus activities on Strava that their watch creates and saves. They put up with so much oddball stuff that I don't have now that I've moved to Garmin and Android. My personal experience with Apple stuff was very far from perfect. I feel your pain with trying to connect external Bluetooth devices with the AW and even iPhone. I've been there... Garmin has LOTS of settings so that you can make things how YOU want them. Customize the data fields and data pages specific to each activity! So your comment about showing the time during an activity- just edit a data page to have a field that shows the current time. It's incredibly easy! Then set the watch to auto-scroll through the data pages during the activity. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you like the Forerunner. Welcome to the Garmin family!

    • @TylerSinden
      @TylerSinden 3 місяці тому

It's seamless having an Apple Watch, iPhone, Mac, etc. You can't beat the connectivity. I was basically only using AW out of the box without the customizations so I wanted to do the same with the Garmin. That's interesting about the auto-scroll feature. I might look into it, but I do like choosing which screen I'm viewing.

I’ve also dealt with pretty bad outside of the knee pain that was most noticeable when going down stairs and was caused by overuse running and cycling. It is almost certainly ITBS. Know you’re a week out from your race and sounds like you might be past the worst of the injury, but just thought I’d note the #1 thing that helped me overcome the injury (other than rest from running and loosening up the glutes with a massage gun or lacrosse ball) was banded side lying clamshells. Your mileage may vary of course, but it took several appointments with a PT and a lot of research to find the solution for me! Best of luck in your race dude!
