    Everytime I come back to this show I appreciate it more and more. This show is really tough to perform. It’s atonal most of the way through and there is even that section where they all play on “different meters” making it feel disjointed on purpose. It’s so cool and I have mad respect for their ambition.

    Funny I come across this video. I saw this show at the championships along with the other 11 finalist. It was my first time going to a drum corps show. After watching the first 11 groups, I could not understand this show. They didn't make any pictures or anything, and at least 2/3 of the time, the marchers were scattered about in random places. How can judges judge the pictures when they aren't making any formations? As someone who played trumpet in band and jazz band back in high school, I have to say that this brass section is incredibly good, maybe that's why they won. And the flag girls were really good too, very in sync. I just had to notice that out of all 12 groups I saw that night, I had to put this group about 7th or 8th as far as entertainment value. Music was just insane good. A lot of it sounded like a bunch of cacophony but they were in tune, and I'm a big jazz fan so I could understand the music. I'm guessing they won because of the music and flag girls. As far as making the formations on the field, I would not put this group in the top 6 that night. I think the mirrors really distracted the audience and made it really hard to understand what was going on on the field. I think the group that did the show with the little kid and the toy soldiers had the best formations. Their music was really good too. I thought maybe they should have won, but I guess that's why I'm not a judge. Anyways, I really enjoyed this music.

      Brandon This show is a work of art. It pushed the limits of drum corps and went outside of the regular "marchy-march to my dot, make pictures on the field, play my music" trend. Looking at the show from a visual perspective, its super progressive and visually stimulating. The members are being asked to do movement that is not in time and must look organic, scatter sets (which are in fact difficult), contrast in forms from grid based forms (boxes, lines), to curvilinear forms that breathe and flow in such a way that matches the music. The mirrors create so many illusions that make you sooooo uncomfortable and you know what? that is exactly what they wanted. Blue Devils never really aim for the typical audience reaction. They always want the "WTF just happened?" reaction! also, judges do not judge off of entertainment value. They judge on excellence. The reason they won that year was because they had a kick ass hornline, a kick ass guard, AND a visually progressive show. You should definitely do some research on the show and its music to get a better understanding. Maybe your opinion will change, maybe it won't. Either way, looking for a deeper appreciation for it will help! :)

      mugo8 What good is this supposedly incredibly sophisticated, ivory white tower "work of art" if the audience didn't like it?

    • @natebnegas
      @natebnegas 9 років тому

      Brandon did people like The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky when it was first premiered? Not at all. In fact, the audience began rioting in the auditorium because they expected to see a traditional ballet, but instead got a very grotesque, raw, and primal ballet (aurally and visually). It was shunned for a very long time because it wasn't traditional. But guess what? now this piece is considered one of the greatest works of art because of how ahead of its time it was. Same applies to this show...its simply ahead of its time and people still don't really get it. (If you haven't heard the Rite of Spring, do it. You will find some similarities. And since you mentioned you are a jazz guy, Stravinsky was influenced by jazz and tried to input some funky chords and rhythms he interpreted as jazz.)

    • @Brandon-jl7cl
      @Brandon-jl7cl 9 років тому

      mugo8 Not everyone rioted. But this is not the same thing. The entire point of DCI is to entertain. If the audience on the whole wasn't entertained, then i'd have to say it wasn't a success, no matter what the judges thought of it. If they were a for-profit group, they'd be bankrupt. 100 years from now, people aren't going to be entertained by the 2010 Blue Devils any more than in the now. And I dare say its highly arrogant to try and compare a drum corps with one of the most influential composers in the 20th century. You can't go around saying that this show was the epitome of drum corps, when most people didn't enjoy it, and those who didn't enjoy it are "less sophisticated".or don't have a "better understanding". It's subjective and opinion based. Your opinion has no more merit than the next fan, but unfortunately for you, you're in the minority on this one. Not to say I wasn't entertained. I thought their music was on an entirely different level than any of the other bands that year, but visually, the show was a complete mess. You can try to rationalize it all you want, but the majority of people agree that visually this show was just not there. I don't care how difficult it was, that doesn't always necessarily translate into "more entertaining". Now I've seen other Blue Devils shows, some of them I really did enjoy, like 2007, 2008 and 2011. And I can appreciate corps trying to push the envelope, trying to innovate and bring Drum Corps to the next level, but I really don't think this kind of a show is doing that. Stravinsky was influential, but I don't think this Blue Devils show was, nor do I think any of their other shows are. I think shows like Cadets early 80's, Cavaliers 2000-2003 were, but then again every corps has their own unique style. I can appreciate that, but it still doesn't take away the fact that the majority of fans thought this 2010 Blue Devils show was visually unappealing. It's not right for you or anyone else to claim my opinion is less evolved or less educated just because I happened to not like it.

    • @natebnegas
      @natebnegas 9 років тому

      Brandon First off, my point is that people rioted and that this piece of music was not accepted in its time. The fact that not everyone rioted is irrelevant. Explain to me how, relatively speaking, this is not the same? Second, I did not say those who didn't enjoy it were "less sophisticated". I am merely saying they don't understand or they are misinformed. Everyone I have talked to who has this opinion often tells me, "I didn't get the theme...there was no story....the visual and music didn't match". Then I implore them to research the source material for the show so they can watch it again with better information. Its amazing when they come back and tell you, "it took me a couple of times to get it, but once I got it, I realized how well organized this show is". Heres a newsflash, the entire point of DCI is not to entertain the audience. That is one of the many reasons. People have to remember that this is also a competition. It is also about making great music with people you love. Entertaining the audience is honestly at the bottom of my agenda. And the majority can think what they want. I'll just let the 16 world championships speak for themselves :)

      +Femi Daniel It happens with every champion. I thought that they had a great show in 2012, but about 3/4 of the audience left. Same thing happened in 13 with crown, i snagged some awesome box level seats because of it. Although i think a lot of people stayed for their 14 encore.

    @ljbee10... Blue Devils design staff creates art. They are artists. With the amazing staff that they have, and talent of performers, they just happen to succeed. People with a mature aspect on art and creativity will find and see the entertainment value very clearly. It's (obviously) not for everyone to understand.

      The way they used the acoustics of the stadium, the added dimension of the mirrors - the mathematics of it is impressive enough. At semis I tried to explain it to the couple sitting next to me and it just wasn't happening.

    I'm not downgrading anybody but BD makes their shows just to win not entertain. I personally like scouts because they have solid marching, great high brass, and they just enjoy what they do whether they win or lose.

    The echo in that stadium creates an interesting effect on the whole thing. I'm intrigued...but I know there are others who thought this show didn't make any sense. Though to be fair, I'm not sure if those people even knew where this idea came from...which was 'City of Glass'. An album recorded between 1947-1953. I've never seen anything else done like this really. I love experimental music.
