First run of the Kearney and Trecker 2HL Universal mill
After two evenings of deep cleaning trying to get all of the grunge off of this machine, I had it clean enough to put together and finally put a new power cord on it and now we are putting it under power. I don't know how long it's been since this machine last ran, but it came out of an automotive restoration shop.

First run of the Schaublin 102 lathe
Переглядів 6 тис.5 років тому
At long last, I finally have this 102 running! In my other feeble video, I showed the new motor running off the Invertek VFD. During the installation of the first belt, I destroyed the front spindle bearing. I decided to replace all three bearings since I had to do one of them. I did locate correct super precision bearings and didn't cheat with standard tolerance stuff. I got lucky and found so...
Invertek VFD wired up to the new motor for the Schaublin 102
Переглядів 4665 років тому
Using an Invertek VFD to power the new 2hp 3 phase motor for my Schaublin 102 lathe. This unit is a 230V single phase input with a full 2hp 3 phase output. The pulley is repurposed from the original multiple pulley contraption that also could drive an accessory spindle for grinding. I had to machine a sleeve to go from the 25mm bore to fit the 7/8" motor shaft. This is my second Invertek unit a...
South Bend 7" shaper

Finally found a shaper in excellent condition. At last! Something I don't have to rebuild.
Barnes 4 1/2 lathe

Showing the lathe running with the motor that was added much later. This was a treadle lathe when new.
Takisawa first run with Invertek VFD
Переглядів 4477 років тому
This is the Invertek Inverter 4kW 1 phase 240V in, 3 phase 240V out, ODE-3-320153-104Y. This allows me to power this lathe without using my 10HP RPC (rotary phase converter). The lathe is a Takisawa TSL-800D 14x32, with a two speed motor. With the VFD, I had to wire it for one speed only and I went with the high speed setting, which is 5HP @ a nominal 1730rpm. The low speed is 3HP @ 1155rpm. Wh...
Second run with the PT-50 Hydrofoil

Still not the best camera work, but a better idea of how she runs.
PT-50 hydrofoil, first run with homemade front foil
Переглядів 997 років тому
Crummy one handed video of first run. Powered by Team Orion brushless 540 motor with built-in ESC and stock propeller. Original front foil was missing and made one from scratch out of 6061-T6 aluminum.

Steel hull radio controller model built in 1937 by Howard Bixby. Currently under restoration and modernization. Scale is 1:62, 120 inches long
Sight glass indicate no oil in the headstock?
Just found your channel and Subscribed. Very nice shaper
Did you run this off your rotary phase converter before g doing the vfd? I’m in trying to figure out if a 10hp phase converter is enough. Everywhere keeps wanting to sell me a 20hp unit to run this, which I think is too much.
I never utilized the rotary phase converter, I had that on my previous SAG-14 and I had a a 10HP unit for the 5HP motor. Note my comment from several years ago, if you go with a VFD, you have to have all the work done at the VFD straight to the motor. If you want to reutilize switches, they have to send control signals to the VFD. I eliminated the use of a rotary, because my Bridgeport also has a VFD and my KT had the motor swapped to single phase, so the VFD keeps a crowded space a bit tidier.
Greate! Thanks!
Nice setup on the motor mount! I'd love to see more of it, I'm in the same position. Thanks,
I have the same machine but mine is on the original stand. Complete with keys for the drawers. Mine is also in mint condition.
Just found your post on THM, so I thought I'd say Hi!
Where did you get the bearings? Model #? Thanks.
Mark, I have a running 2HL PLAIN that I got as scrap in 1973 and rebuilt. It is not a universal table but does have the universal - vertical head. It had failed bearings and had been parted out to keep another 2HL running. Had to replace a bearings and make 3 missing gears and a shiftier fork in the column main drive. Make sure the 2 pumped oil systems work, that was the problem that killed this one years ago.
Your rpm would be the motor speed rpm at a 1-1 pulley setup
Congrats on your machine! I just got the same exact model last year and just love it. David Dominessy has a great video in which he runs through all of the controls and lubrication points and oil types, which was very helpful to me. I agree with the other comment here that there is something amiss with your rapid traverse; it should sound smooth and not like it’s grinding. Have fun and good luck!
What did you pay for the girl ???
I can tell you that something sounds amiss with the rapid traverse. The machine I ran was smooth as silk. Good luck Mark
This machine is a real CADILLAC for sure. I am looking for one myself. Keep up the great work fella. Peace
I have one just like it. They are great lathes.
Are you selling it? Have you got more bits for it?
I enjoyed the video as I bought a similar mill recently. Do you have a vertical head for the machine? If not I will buy that drive gear that is in the spindle. If you reply on this comment I should see it. Thanks, Brian
Yes, I have the vertical head, so the gear is a keeper. Good luck with your new aquisition!
Great looking lil machine
Thank you for posting this. This has been very informative for me since I just brought home a 1943 model. Mine was stuck in the rapid mode and after PB blaster and playing with the clutch, it finally broke loose and now works as it should. As you, I am learning this machine and loving it.
Glad my feeble video was appreciated. This past year hasn't been too good for using the machine due to serious health issues with my daughter, but she is on the mend finally and I look forward to making chips with it. Then I can hopefully make a better video of it devouring some steel.😁
Nice machine
In the video, the motor is running backwards. The quick stroke should be on the return. Nice machine! I love mine!
I have a takisawa 460. When i hook it up through panel that is on it, it dosnt run. When i hook it directly to motor, it runs like its supposed to. The only problem is iam not sure if i need to have some breakers in the system for protection against load and whatever else. How did you hook yours? Through the machiness panel?
I eliminated all switches and relays and the VFD controls everything. VFD's don't like switches between it and the motor.
Looks and sounds like it is running backwards. Shouldn’t the slow movement be the cutting phase?
Too cool, now get that bench cleaned up. Nice job Brother.
Are you still running this boat
Rb Crawler it's waiting for a new motor and water cooled speed control.
Mark Shaw I just found a kit in the box never built has everything just has one page that is missing 1/3 of the page in manual everything in original packaging it is on one of my shelves now
Rb Crawler cool! It's a very well behaved model on the water. The trick is to use a 540 equivalent motor for power and Lipo batteries to keep the weight down. I was running two 2S batteries and had quite a bit of runtime. The speed control was integral with the motor and kept going into thermal shutdown after about 10 minutes. I'm refitting it with an outrunner motor, but have been lazy about it.

Have a similar Lathe-what tool post are you using? I'm looking for an upgrade. Much appreciated
Great....I have the same with the original base.....Love the light...I'm looking for one. Mine is a 1958 model. You can see the original factory scaping on the dovetail ways. Enjoy!
