A man and a professionally constructed sock puppet build guitar pedals, recording gear and amplifiers together. We show you what it sounds like, how to use it and how you can build your own. The goal is to show you things that actually help you make and produce music instead of collecting the newest consumer trash. Why pay absurd prices for poorly constructed, over hyped junk when you can build the best yourself?

1776 MultiPlex Echo DIY Guitar Pedal
I recently discover that it was the bare cables all the time, I thought that was the potentiometer of my basses. I use Neutrik connectors and I'm good soldering with stain, but always with cheap china-made cables. Thanks for the good explanation and pro tips, is interesting how the interferences go inside cheap cables.
So you're not using an eq pedal at all when you're playing live?
Thanks for an honest review 😊.
LMFAO.. But, you're cool mate
Thanks Catner!
how do i know which revision i should get! 😢
If you’re looking for something that imparts more character and will primarily be used on vocals go with the blue stripe. Otherwise I would go with the all black Rev D!
yo what mic is the one u said sounds like a royer? i cant find it :(
It’s the RM BIV-1! I’m not sure if it’s possible to get them anymore since they ship from Russia. Here is the manufacturer website: www.bashaudio.ru/rmbiv1.eng.html It looks like an ancient geocities website but it’s legit. There’s a link to his eBay store on there as well.
any advice for a kit to build?
If you’re looking for a compressor kit in general, I would go with a complete FET kit from Hairball. Check out my channel for a video on their 1176 Bluestripe!
Amazing, thanks a Lot
Excellent, THANKS!!
Thanks for checking it out!
Was this a kit or a from scratch build?
This one was from a kit from Triode, but I had a lot of trouble getting all the parts in and clarifying issues. If I were to try another kit I would probably look into the one by Weber.
“People in the 60’s are acid by the sheet”. Me too. Subbed. 😂
Thanks for the sub! Don’t look in the mirror too much while you’re tripping balls!
Mad respect. This is WAY more difficult build than a Fuzzface.. or a Fender Champ!!
The fuzz face and champ were my stepping stones to the LA-2A! Stick with it and you’ll be there before you know it!
I appreciate how you present everything, here. It really hits a lot of bells, in how I like to research things. I was able to get some answers to things I wanted to know about building an amp…. including the experience of building it from a beginners perspective. Also, I appreciate the tags for jumping around. Thanks!
Thanks bambam! Hopefully you’ll be building your own soon!
@@shoetiquemusic literally in the final stages of finishing up a Vibrolux 5f11. Just need to wire the circuit board to the controls, jacks, and power… and then testing… and I should be done! Thanks for the tips!
I cut the board in half and built a single channel. I ended up going with carbon comp resistors, RCA tube's, and AMI UTC clones. I love it.
What was your total cost?
@@djentlover somewhere around $1300 - I etched my own faceplate and used premium components
@@JustinHeronMusic Hmm interesting. How is your experience with it, how's the sound? When I have compared a real L2A2 with Slate's plug-in version, I've found that the hardware distorts the consonants of vocals nicely, and just had velvety saturation overall compared to the plugin, which sounds more clean and mid focused. I feel like I have to add some tape saturation afterwards to get a bit closer to the hardware.
@@djentlover The "effortlessness" of the hardware is what makes it worth it to me. The plugin has a "squeeze" to the compression. Thicker, more dimension, and more sheen is how I'd describe the hardware.
That’s awesome! Do you have any pictures of your build? I’d love to see how it turned out!
Hahahaha omg the sock puppet 😂😂😂
I think it’s possessed. It’s been saying really nasty things about Rhett lately.
If you live in russia you can buy these mics almost free (just bought pair of oktava mics for 2$).Going to fit one of them into oktava md-55 case
The MD200 is getting harder to find with all the trade restrictions these days. The MD55 is a very cool looking mic! How does it sound? How does it compare to the 200?
@@shoetiquemusic Mine MD55 is just empty case, but it cost me same 2$(price for working one around 20-30$ in russia, too much for just play around). MD200 that i got unfortunately came with broken negative contact, MD64M is working, but it is too quiet, i think it is because negative contact somewhere connected to the metal case of capsule and i'm connecting it with xlr. Now i waiting NOSEM N-316 capsule from aliexpress to put in that case.
Excellent vid! I'm looking to build an ac30 type amp myself at the moment. This companies kits look great, now i could be looking at a dumble instead. haha!
Oh hell ya! It’s diyrecordingstudio! For those unfamiliar his channel is here: m.youtube.com/@diyrecordingstudio Lots of good diy info there! Trinity has a TC15 that gives you matchless/vox tones. Unfortunately it’s not available at the moment. Nik at Ceriatone would be able to point you in the right direction. Their stuff is high quality and with your experience you’ll be able to get by with just a wiring diagram. Let me know if you want to colab on something sometime!
You gotta build a trainwreck.
Which one?
@shoetiquemusic So far, I've only built 2 Express amps. They're the higher gain el34/6v6 version. They still do an amazing clean sound as well. But the liverpool is the one you might want to look at based on your comments in this video. Pete Thorne demos an original in a video. They're a very simple circuit. They do the clean to mean type thing just beautifully, riding the guitars volume pot. I set out last year to build all the classic amps that I could never afford, and the express truly blew me away. There's a pdf online that's worth looking at. Express build guide 2.0. Definitely a desert island amp for me..
@@soapboxearth2 You've got my interest Soap Box! I've got a compressor and a mic on deck, but I might have to give this one a go after those are done. Here is the pdf build guide for those who are interested: el34world.com/Forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=22434.0;attach=67180
@shoetiquemusic you won't be disappointed! Pacific audio makes the transformer set. They have the original line and the Red Series (less expensive made over seas, identical to the usa model ) you won't believe the harmonics . Pete Thorne demos an original
Good info... you're a saint. I make my ts cables no problem, some thanks to your video. but wanna make some trs for the front patching of my new patchbay. Any recommendations. I'm little confused with making balances TRS cables and what materials to go with for a simple, solid, TRS front patchbay cable?
I’m guessing you want something on the thinner side. Mogami makes nice stereo TT patch cable. For the plug you probably want TT (tiny telephone). Just make sure that’s what your patch bay needs. It should be wired similar to a 1/4” Trs plug. I would call up redco or switchcraft and talk to their sales reps. They’re good at pointing you in the right direction for parts selection. Let me know if there was something more specific you were looking for and I’ll try to help!
@@shoetiquemusic Sorry, forgot to mention... All jacks on my patchbay are 1/4". 🥸
@@artspiritfineartstudiogall9672 Mogami cable and Neutrik 1/4" TRS jacks should do the trick! There's a wiring diagram that shows how to wire 1/4" TRS here: customcableconnection.com/cdn/shop/products/xlr_to_trs_blanced_pinout_1_2000x.png?v=1668827639 In your case you'll have a TRS on each end of the cable. Each end will be wired exactly the same.
Jammin as usual, my friend. 😎🤺 Back with another banger, juicier than watermelon, creamier than crimson, ruder than the original rude-boy Bart Skampson... . .
You a bad mama jama Art Spirit. Glad you know Skampson style when you see it. That’s as real as it gets. No cap fr fr.
Great looking build! Nice rundown of the features and tones as well. This thing sounds damned good - it’s clearly deserving of the coveted big chungus award.
Thanks Mike! The Big Chungus award is a big deal. Always appreciate seeing you in the comments!
Thanks for the feedback . We will be reviewing our documentation as per your comments.
BOTH 6V6 & 6L6 are fixed bias. The bias switch changes the. impedance of the OT to match the power tubes
Good catch! This is the correct info!
7:20 I really tried to like the Gen Loss mk2, but finally after 6 months I sold it and got a Deco v2. So if nothing else the Gen Loss led me to the Deco...which I think counts as useful? lol Awesome amp build, sounds great.
Hey MoR! I'm always happy to see you in the comments. I hope you labeled your Gen Loss mk2 as 'MINT LIKE NEW - HiGH LateNcY, OrigINAL BASS - NO MOD!!!!'. Someone would probably pay 3x for that. 😂
“Stay hostile…” thats hilarious

Universal Audio 2LA2
Seems like a decent unit, but its going to set you back. You'd want to make sure it was well taken care of if you spring for one. Here's a review on the unit by George Shilling: www.recordproduction.com/reviews/universal-audio-2-la-2 Positive reviews from gearspace: gearspace.com/board/high-end/908470-who-tried-discontinued-ua-2-la2a.html A few negative ones: gearspace.com/board/high-end/145539-warning-universal-audio-2la2.html
Anybody know about Universal Audio’s version of this already? Built almost 2 decades ago. It’s called the UNIVERSAL AUDIO 2LA2
Hi Will! I'm not very familiar with the UA unit. I did some searching around and it seems like the units are decent enough. Plenty of complaints over on gearspace, but they're a tough crowd :)
thanks!
Glad you enjoyed Julian!
do you have an estimate of the cost per unit? thanx
Roughly $475 per channel. That number doesn't include shipping which could vary wildly depending on when you live.
The Marshall 18-watt is the stuff of legends-pure tube power at its finest. After all my research, I decided to pick up a Sound City Studio 20 since it’s said to be pretty similar. I’ve got a video up on my channel if you’re interested! The cleans are solid, but it’s the overdrive that really takes it to another level. Let me know what you think!
That Sound City sounds pretty great! You've got some nice riffs going over there. Here is a link to the Sound City vid for those who are curioius: ua-cam.com/video/poI7u_zQMnw/v-deo.html
@@shoetiquemusic aw thanks, I didn't expect such nice feedback
Great video, very practical like that a lot. For me it's quite simple, for live use my EQ pedal is my solo boost and in the studio a tool for sculpting tone or any other use mentioned in this video. No need for presets that way
Hey Paco! That sounds like a sensible approach. I think the clean boost aspect of this pedal is the most useful one.
is there just one i can buy that is good like this
Gotham sells custom cables on their website but they’re crazy expensive! If you’re not into the DIY aspect try searching for Gotham guitar cables. There are a few different options out there.
What do you think about the skulptor ts500?
I like them! They impart a really nice vibe on drums or mix buses. That said I do wish the unit was as a stereo one. I very rarely use a single mono unit. You have to mess around with the drive and output controls a bit to get them synced up.
Hi mate, is the Starfinder speaker punchy and bright ? Thanks man, cool build.
I’d say it’s punchy but not too bright. Overall it’s a well rounded speaker with a ton of oomph!
I dislike graphic EQs but love parametric EQs. They come in handy when playing in different rooms to work out any sonic issues by pinpointing the exact frequency that needs adjusting. I just ordered this pedal to see if it beats my current parametric eq pedal.
Let me know what you think Man Cave! Thanks for checking out the vid!
sales marketing gone wrong can i sell you some streaming revenue
Only if it’s free programmer!
there always seems to be A holes on youtbe... why bother mentioning them... just forget them... they want your attention... losers... just do your thing... build the amp... now build a black face deluxe reverb... !
I own a fender black face reverb reissue but I’ve been tempted to gut it and put my own circuit in there! This might be the encouragement I needed!
Tight as Truck with a leather fender. Bold as big old bells screamin straight from heaven.
Strong praise Art Spirt! I appreciate it!
This is the second video of yours I've seen! Thanks for the no-nonsense approach.
Hell ya Flip! I’ve got plenty more on my channel. Check ‘em out!
Excellent video, no waste, no fuss. The distorted rhythm chords sound excellent, but are not THAT distorted, and WHERE is the GUITAR SOLOING tone(s), the LEAD tone??
Thanks Flip! I’m a rhythm guy through and through. I’ll have to practice my lead work and make a follow up!
Can I just purchase yours 😊
Sorry Ernie, no can do! Too much blood and sweat into this one!

Keep Jammin' dude. You do it right. I had the hardest time finding a mic that dips around 3.2k range. My voice likes a good dip there. Looks like this one does. So I ordered a couple. Thanks for the tip friend!
That's what I like to hear Art Spirit! Let me know what you think about them!
@@shoetiquemusic Will do....when I get em in a month or so. Would you have any recommendations on a good solid dynamic mic that would have a similar frequency response? WTF?...Greatest opening line ever...I'm in!
Hands where I can see 'em soakedp90s!
Nice piece of gear you got there and nice 'write up' on the details.
Thanks Leg3ndary!
Great video. Not my particular preference to doing a DIY though. I'm much more into the idea of an actual, complete kit, rather than a circuit board and BOM; where you need to go on a scavenger hunt and chase down all the other components yourself - pretty much every build I've tried that way turned out to be an old maid - so I just won't do them anymore. Aside from CAPI, AML and Hairball there just aren't that many people offering kits like that anymore. Seems to me that Group DIY was a much more interesting place about 10 to 15 years ago; things there really atrophied about 10 years ago in the mid-teens. I really miss the Analog Allstars 500 series Pultec clone: one of my favorite all time builds ever; it's a wonderful walk through Wima's product line! Unfortunately there just isn't much of interest on the White Market page anymore (it used to be multiple pages). Most of the people there selling kits over the years either went on to sell assembled gear only like Serpent Audio, or quit the business altogether. It's a real shame - I think most of the best analog gear I own was built from kits, not purchased retail.
Hey Jimmy! Thanks for checking out the video. I agree that the options for fully assembled kits can be limiting - especially for full size rack gear. In addition to what you mentioned above, kits are also offered by Sound Skulptor, DIY Recording Equipment and Yann Lu Audio. You should check those out! Don Classics offers kits that are 'near complete' - they provide a link to a Mouser cart which contains the necessary parts. I think kit making is super time consuming and I imagine that the profit margin is razor thin. Having put together several non kit builds I can see how much of a pain it is to gather all the parts in one place!
Great video man
Glad you like it Antonio! I hope you build your own!!
Oktava always great!
This is my first and only Oktava! What’s your favorite?
Thumb up! That is my modified diagram you shared in your video, thanks for the shoutout. I made one of these (with tubeswells guidance a long time ago)
Hell ya Jonathan! I appreciate you taking the time to put the diagram out there. Glad you stumbled upon the video! What have you been building lately?
@@shoetiquemusic I haven't built anything in a while. But I have a pile of stuff that keeps breaking, so that keeps me busy with the soldering iron.
