Rope is far better than straps . Mechanical straps have a point of weakness that you cannot necessarily see. Whereas rope is not only more traditional and skilfull, it tells you way ahead of when it needs to be replaced.
For a w12 you'd need to poke twice as long to correct? Asking due to being a new steerer
Hey David, I don't think you can prescribe this so simply--it has so much to do with conditions, boat seating, skill and effectiveness of the steer person, etc. V12s are a bit less responsive to steer strokes, but one steer person can still maneuver them in a range of conditions without too much effort. The second seat 6 is usually a steer person as well and can provide backup steering if you need support. I've seen V12s do tight turns on a short course, do 500m sprints, and I've heard of folks surfing them at Moliko! (that story DID turn out to be a worst case scenario tale, so I'm not advocating for it by saying it!!)
