    Great Project! I'm building a machine myself but using scooter wheels instead. So far so goo. Did you build a ball feeder for this?

    • @RaisingAwesome
      @RaisingAwesome 5 років тому

      Unfortunately, never did...we ended up moving on to our next project. We had considered simply using rigid or corrugated PVC pipe. For us...it was the view more than the climb on this project. It definitely gave us both more mojo for mechanical design - particularly using joints in Autodesk Fusion 360. I highly recommend using that free software to aid in your design. One last thing...we found that it pitched best if you pinch the ball as it travels through the wheels - so a tighter clearance is preferred. Have fun!

    • @Swenser
      @Swenser 9 місяців тому

      @@RaisingAwesomewhat was your clearance between wheels. I've just tried 35mm but with weak motors I'm inclined to think 40cm might be better. Also I'm working on an automatic ball feeder that doesn't jam with the use of ball sensor ir led and or just strategically laid out levers and pipes. I don't like the idea of the spinning disc. Try and eliminate another motor. Just use an actuator to let balls drop

    • @RaisingAwesome
      @RaisingAwesome 8 місяців тому

      @@Swenser Not sure on the measurement, but we found it definitely did better "pinching" the ball. It got 2x the distance versus just barely passing it through with a just a little grab. It seemed that the compression helped the propulsion.

    Just looking around after watching your video on the EEVBlog, nice work man! Its great that you're taking the time to inspect your vehicle, but its important to read up on your specific vehicle if you're unsure of something. Great points on making sure the old gasket is off and to lubricate the new one. As dave would say, thats a trap for young players. I did see a couple other things in the video I want to point out as a professional in the field. Firstly, the coolant while a little below the full mark was still within acceptable range, keep in mind that fluids expand with heat and coolant is no exception. When the engine is warm the coolant level in the overflow tank can rise by as much as two inches, in your case there was a second line further down than indicated when the coolant is low. Also, check the color and consistency of the fluid in the radiator as well as the overflow, coolant should never have rust particles in it, or be overly brown (some coolants are Orange and it can be difficult to tell). Old coolant is unable to protect the engine from rust and acidic byproducts of combustion and can cause damage to the engine gaskets. Brake fluid should never be topped off without a full brake evaluation. Unlike coolant, brake fluid is in a sealed system and will not evaporate, if the level is low it is either due to wear of braking components or a fluid leak. When the brake shoes/pads wear down, the pistons in the wheel cylinder/caliper must extend further to make contact with the drums/rotor. Fluid level is an indication of shoe/pad life, if its low, you should have your brakes inspected. I would always suggest having a professional check the work afterwards if you decide to do the job yourself (it's not very hard for simple maintenance). If you do decide to do the work yourself, only take apart one side at a time so you can refer to the other if you have questions. Remember, oils are petroleum based, brake fluid is alcohol based, you cannot mix the two, if you do, you must suck out as much fluid as possible, then bleed the system thoroughly to ensure all of the oil is removed, otherwise premature brake failure may occur. Also keep in mind that brake fluid being alcohol based absorbs water, over time brake fluid will rust away at the braking system from the inside out, its a good idea to bleed the system with fresh unopened fluid every 3-5 years depending on the environment. Great work man, keep on learning!

    • @RaisingAwesome
      @RaisingAwesome 6 років тому

      Thanks for all those pointers! It's definitely time for us to do more for the fluids. The brakes, including calipers and rotors, were replaced last year, but the fluid is a mix of old and new. We have a new brake fluid "sucker", so we'll probably do a video on that once it warms up. One unique discovery after this video was the coolant actually being very low in the radiator/engine. It started showing itself by a flushing sound in the first few minutes of driving and turning out of the drive way. Also, the radiator cap had signs of leakage. We think it wasn't overflowing and pulling back in correctly. So, we removed the cap with the engine cold, started it, and slowly added water while squeezing hoses. It took about 20 minutes to get all the air out and a gallon of additional coolant. We blew out the hose between the overflow tank and the radiator with compressed air and replaced the cap with a new one. No more flushing sound! If we were more optimistic, we would have done a video on it. Again, thanks for the tips and comments. We aim to inspire the next generation to "make and do" and your comments I'm sure helped with that.
