I have been doing how you do it for decades but some are arguing with me(we're friends) say then it goes out of the candle when it burns and if top to bottom it stays with you and not leaving in the smoke and fire. I just read in Pamela Ball's, "book of spells," and she says the same and to go wick to base to attract and vice versa. So I'm just sticking with what I've always done and what you say. But reading these candle magic books it's opposite and I'm not sure why
