I restore lighthouses and work to uncover their history.
SS Alpena Master Salute at the Grassy Island Range Lights; Green Bay, WI
I'm back with the Type B Diaphone!
I finally managed to meet the Alpena at the mouth of the Fox River in Green Bay.
The Grassy Island Range Lights were built in 1872 on a small island approaching the mouth of the Fox River in Green Bay. When the channel was widened in the 1960s, the lighthouses were not needed and slated for demolition.
The Green Bay Yacht Club acquired the two towers in 1966 and in recent years have completely restored them. The lenses are replica 6th Order lenses made by Artworks Florida.
(Special Thanks to Wayne Dunbar for making this happen!)

Alpena in Green Bay - Fire/Fog horn and Steam Horn Exchange
Переглядів 738Рік тому
I took my Type B Diaphone to Green Bay to try and get a steam salute out of the Alpena. I was supposed to go to the Grassy Island Range Lights and get a cool video from there...but we missed them. A friend who was meeting me anyway scouted for a 2nd location and got permission from some cool construction workers to set up on the edge of the new marina by Mason Street. I'm really happy to see th...
SS Badger in Manitowoc (With Salute)
Переглядів 699Рік тому
6-17-23 The SS Badger was returning to Manitowoc after a 2-hour shoreline cruise along the WI shore. When the boat passed the breakwall, she sounded a salute. I was waiting with the Type B Diaphone and responded. After unloading the cruise passengers and loading a small load of cars & trucks, they were on the way back to Ludington about a half hour later. One month after this video, on July 26t...
Steam Locomotive Whistle, "Fire Alarm" Whistle, & Type F Diaphone

We're back out at Harry Barry's place on Lake Erie! I brought my new acquisition out to test it on his air supply - a 5" diameter Lunkenheimer "Fire Alarm" whistle. The chime whistle is the one from the last video - a 6" diameter chime by Schaeffer and Budenberg. It's always a treat to visit Harry! Check out his channels where he shows off his noisemakers! @12inchchime @harrybarry2291
SS Badger Exchanging Salutes with Type B Diaphone Horn
Переглядів 24 тис.2 роки тому
The @SSBadgerFerry 2022 sailing season came to a close on October 16th and I wanted to close out the season by exchanging salutes on her final departure from Manitowoc! The ship's reply to the master salute (3 long, 2 short) features the ship's original steam horn (a Tyfon 300) on the 2 short blasts. The chime horn is a Kahlenberg T4 air horn. Kahlenberg is located in Two Rivers - 10 miles nort...
HEAR a Type F Diaphone and Type B Diaphone Side by Side

Jake Heffernan and his Gamewell Type B Diaphone Harry Barry and his Type F Diaphone Fog Horn (Diaphone Signal Co. Toronto, ON) This Type F was used in the Cleveland, Ohio West Pierhead lighthouse from 1916 - 1965.
How a Type F Diaphone Fog Horn Works
Переглядів 17 тис.2 роки тому
Harry Barry explains how his Type F Diaphone fog horn works. His fog horn is mounted on the shore of Lake Erie and is powered by a 1000 gallon air tank. The Type F and (two-toned) F2T horns were the standard for lighthouse fog horns for much of the 20th century. Harry's horn is the only privately owned Type F that's in working condition that I'm aware of.
Sounding Classic Steam Whistles and a Type F Diaphone Fog Horn
Переглядів 1,6 тис.2 роки тому
Harry Barry invited us out to his place along the shore of Lake Erie to show us his Type F Diaphone fog horn. Before that, he shows us 3 whistles in his impressive steam whistle collection. He explains a bit about each whistle before blowing them on about 100 PSI of air from a 1,000 gallon tank. When the pressure is around 45 PSI in the tank, he sounds the Type F Diaphone fog horn. The Type F (...

Kewaunee Fire Dept (Volunteer) responds to a working fire at a two story residence. An adult and an infant, the only two occupants of the house got out safely. The adult sustained minor injury in the process and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The house was a total loss and was razed later in the summer.
Type B Diaphone Horn Test Sounding

This Type B Diaphone (manufactured by Gamewell) was originally used to signal box alarms for a fire department. This size was used on some Great Lakes light stations (Such as Fourteen Foot Shoal Lighthouse on Lake Huron) where the incredible power of the Type F or Type F2T diaphone was not needed. I acquired this horn in January 2022, sight unseen. The owner knew what it was, but that's it. He ...

Behind the Scenes on the S.S. Badger
So just imagine back over 100 years ago in some major manufacturing city the cheapest rents in town were next to the fog horn factory. Here’s another thought, back then the workers may have been called to work by steam horns, then work all day building steam horns, then end a work shift by yet another horn.
I bet your neighbors. Love you 😁. Thanks, great video.
Brighton Marina, West arm, circa 1983. There were no public loos so you had to shimmy onto a ledge surrounding a white round building at the end of the arm. So, 12 yr old me shimmy around, mid pee and unknown to me .....BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.. .the damn fog horn came on. I must have jumped about 30 feet in the air and how I didnt fall into the sea is still a mystery to me. I came off that thing, shaking like a leaf, covered in pee!!! Fun times.
Cool stuff!
Never knew the technicals on the source of that sound but I've heard it many times from light houses around here as a kid and love it.
The Diaphone fog horn is an adaption of the Diaphone used in the pipe organ which produces the 64ft sounds a famous example being in the worlds largest pipe organ in Boardwalk hall which has a 64ft Diaphone.
I came here hoping to hear it sound! Thank you for posting!
Fairly superficial explanation of how it works
Holy Grunt! this sounds Awesome!
I find it fitting that there was a train horn going off in the background for part of the video.
Sounds awesome
DINNER TIMMEEEEE!!!!!!!
Very interesting
😂😂 Nice
On old lighthouses, were these sounded 24x7, or only when there was fog?
Only when there was fog or other obscured visibility
Whats the decible rating from 100 feet away on the type F?
Around 125-128 dB.
@@supertyfon1736 nice
I dunno, maybe it sounds better from a long distance over water? We had one a few miles away in Lake Superior back in the '50s/'60s that had such a deep mournful sound. I loved going to sleep with it.
Looks nice and vintage.
Ford F-150 vs some random freightliner
Good stuff
0:45 Here is the master salute btw
Very much enjoyed this! Thanks for sharing!

This is fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
Is the horn at the lighthouse and how were you to blow the horn
No this lighthouse never had a fog signal. This horn is the little brother of the big diaphone fog horn many are familiar with. I have a gas air compressor and tank in the bed of a pickup truck
I've loved the sound of tha badger horn sins I heard it in person it's on my top 5 with the lake guardian, James r barker, Roger blough and if it ever sailes again Edward l Ryerson
HUGE respect to the guy who replied with the same tone.👌
Awesome!!! Glad to see a video of a Master with those beautiful 300s!
SS Badger Vs Leslie A200 be like...
A very loud and very fascinating hobby. Well done. 👍
This reminds me of the sharks hockey goal horn gor some reason, I don’t know if it’s like the same
The Sharks horn is not quite like this, but I can hear the similarity. The Sharks horn is a Kahlenberg Triton S-120. Manufactured by a small company in Two Rivers, WI. ua-cam.com/video/DpvOXwEwS9A/v-deo.html
How cool it must feel to have a ship answer your call!
Especially a ship as classic as the Alpena. She’s the oldest operating ship on the great lakes, often called the “grand old lady of the lakes” as she’s 80 years old. She was originally the Leon Fraiser when she was launched in February 1942
Where's the taco stand?
Thanks for this. I had the privelege to have a walk through of the machinery spaces when she was laid up in Lake Calumet. The engineer and I had a chat and he invited me aboard while the deck crew of my boat was lashing together our southbound barges for Lemont. Hate to see the old war horse turned into a barge.
kahlenberg t4
Yes that's it that's the sound. When I was about 6-10 years old and it was run by the coast guard. Just fantastic excellent job. I thought I would never hear that sound ever again. Thanks.
That was awesome

A Master & a Captains Salute! It doesn't get any better!
I love working on the Badger.
That is just awesome.
Wow
So if the locks weren’t there you would basically have to go downhill in water and uphill in water? I’m confused as to what would it be like if they weren’t there? Just a steep ramp like river of water?
A steep ramp of water is rapids. Between the American locks and the Canadian locks are a series of rapids that mimic what the untamed river might look like. Commercial navigation at that point would be impossible.
@@LighthouseJake ah rapids!! Thanks that makes complete sense now. The rapids would be too rough/fast and Flow would be too much in one direction for ships and such to use and navigate through. Appreciate you.
Hope your ears were okay, on the last blast you were hearing close to 150 dB.
Please lower the music so we can hear your voice better. Thank you.
I was here 2 weeks ago so this brings memory's.
It sounds like New Hyde Park's Diaphone
Thanks very cool!
Nice video. Suggest you turn down the music!
