First day of Academy starts tomorrow for me. I plan on coming back to this every few months.
That is awesome, good luck and keep me posted!
Hopefully soon! Be safe.
Chief Lasky spoke to us during our in service a few years ago on a zoom meeting, hope to get to meet him in person one day.
Classic setup here. The Chief softens the recruits up with gentle words of wisdom before the instructors come in and smoke them.
First day of the Academy for me starts tomorrow. I'm almost 40 and this video was so inspiring and affirming.
Thank you and awesome!! Do us all proud!!
Great podcast as it hit on a very great topic. I myself have attended outside training on my own dime for the department that I am on as the Fire Photographer for Public Information Officer. It is coming in handy already.
It’s a shame this video has so little views, this speech should be shown on the first day of every fire academy across the country. Hell, there’s CEOs who need to see this. Thank you Chief for sharing this.
Great podcast
❤ i joined this year last month to be honest i loves this Job you learn everyday, thank you for sharing such words 🙏🏽
Great show guys and we all need to do more to keep the names of our retired brothers and sisters moving around the firehouse.
Thanks buddy. You’re right big time!
Hi Chief, I have been using this video since it came out.. (maybe 15 years ago?) To teach students in our college firefighter 1001 program what it means to be a firefighter and the character you must have - I also conduct firefighter interview coaching and this video is the homework I give to those prepping, so they understand character traits like pride, honor integrity, compassion, empathy, loyalty, and why its so important in the fire service and then they can think of stories where they demonstrated these traits which are all common questions in the firefighter interview. Thanks again Chief!
Thank you Shawn. I’m honored buddy!!
I'm always glad to listen to the Chief's information, but all too often the discussion by the chief is geared toward the larger paid or volunteer fire departments. One suggestion I have is for a class/podcast titled "What to do when there is no officer". In my rural department there is no certainty that when we get a call there will be a officer available. In fact, it is not unusual to send out a truck with a DPO and two firefighters and all too often those firefighters may not have too many fires under their belt. Add to this the fact help from the next truck due or mutual aid may be long time coming. All that said, what's needed is to have an experienced officer available to help that firefighter. A calm voice that can control the situation, lower the emotion, ask the right questions and give the correct answers till help arrives. Maybe my department is the exception, but I don't think so and wonder how many Fire Districts have given a thought to setting up a procedure/protocol that would make such command help available to the new guy riding the right hand seat.
Great idea! I see that often with my own volunteer department especially during the day. Thanks for the suggestion. Be safe!
Chief lasky I enjoy listening to you and John on your I was wondering if I could get your email I have some questions for you
Absolutely. chieflasky@gmail.com
Thank you!!
Another great show brothers 👊🏻
Thanks brother!
I’m so sorry for your loss Chief 😞
Thanks buddy.
“Passion drives success!” Agree with you a 100% Chief. Thank you for your inspiration.
Absolutely!
Chief, great video. Spot on! Every FF should see this whether it’s day 1, year 10 or the day before retirement. Thank you for this
Incredible story! Love the history. Thank you for sharing Chief.
I commented last year when I joined my vollie department. I’m commenting again to let you know I start academy next week for my city’s career department (Athens, GA). I’ve been listening to your podcast a lot and I want to be an “old school” recruit who works hard and pushes himself to be his best always. Thank you for your inspiring content. It has helped motivate me as I move towards making a career out of firefighting/EMT service. You’re motivating as young guys!
That is outstanding buddy!! How exciting! Thank you for your kind words and keep us posted on your progress.
@@chieflasky Absolutely, Chief. The fact you respond personally to these comments says a lot. I will come back here to report when I make it through academy and get on shift!
Great podcast; I would say some of the examples are textbook: Paralysis due to over analysis
Chief Lasky, thank you for posting sir. I just earned a spot in the fire academy and I am thrilled to soon be a part of this brotherhood. Ready to work hard and mold myself into one of the next leaders.
Congratulations!!
Awesome podcast as always!
Thanks buddy!
@@chieflasky Your welcome! I always learn something listening to you and Chief Salka. Stay safe brother!
I just joined my local volunteer department in NE Georgia. I'm entirely green and learning all I can in preparation for taking Firefighter 1. Understanding the "why" is just as important as understanding the "how". I really appreciate this talk about the values of the fire service and hope I can develop the character and strength of mind required to serve my community. Thank you, Chief Lasky.
Thanks Benjamin!
Great video. I've always wondered where the Halligan tool came from. It's simple, sturdy, and multipurpose. Couldn't ask for much more, really.
What an incredible speech! Hit the nail on the head, dead on. Thanks Chief!
Thanks Travis!
I just had my first day at the fire academy... I can't tell you how thankful I am for you sharing this perspective on the fire service. It's absolutely a calling and I've had to eat a whole lot of humble pie lately. It's not about me, it's about those around me that I am preparing myself to serve in the future. First in. First out. Thank you, Chief.
Thank you my friend! Congratulations on what will be incredible and one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever accomplish! Be safe.
Good talk guys Bill Chadwick Swansea fire department 43 years chauffeur ladder truck engine heavy rescue hydraulic oil water ladders and I'm agree chainsaw man
Thanks Bill!! Be safe!
My Dad Blacksmith Peter Clarke made the original Halligan tool off sketches from Chief Halligan , while employed as a Blacksmith at DSNY.
That is awesome!
Great stuff as always guys!
Another great podcast! Standards and expectations! Thanks brothers!
Thanks buddy!
Hey Chief, I'm glad you turned me onto these back at the end of August! Amy suggestions on how to hold your officer accountable from the backseat? I've brought the lack of preparation and undue conduct to light, only to be reprimanded and threatened by admin. Nothing has changed and I've faced continual backlash.
Sorry to hear you're going through this buddy. I'm thinking this is a conversation for the telephone and not on social media. Maybe one day we can jump on the phone.
Chief Lasky, your bragging about the fire service fans the flames that burn in us that love this job.
Thanks for posting this Chief. One of my favourite FDIC keynotes and I’m sure arguably one of the best!
Thank you my brother!! I truly appreciate it! It’s just me bragging about the fire service.
Two of my heroes
Thank you!
Affirm.
This should be used for all public services!
Jon Lowery Thanks Jon!
Sweet ride chief
Thanks buddy!
Mr. Chief Lasky this is a great video and I’m so glad I found it. Thank you very much for this. This is my calling. I’ve been wanting to become a fireman for a very long time now and I’m finally going through with it. I’m kind of scared but so happy that I’m finally doing it. I will not give up on this dream of mine. Thanks again. Also, if it’s at all possible, I’m trying to raise money for emt and fire academy. Any donations help. If you’re able, if not that’s totally fine. Thank you again for this video. I hope you're well and thank you for the history lesson I often wondered how this came about it's such a great tool
We’re doing great. Hope all is well on your end. Thanks and be safe!
Good stuff. This has been the MO for every company I have ever worked on. 3am, 3rd fire of the day: clean the tools, change out the line, full SCBA tanks on the rig, top off saws....combat ready then we can take a break! On the scene aggressive, but not reckless. Wear all of your PPE! I often tell my guys: "Our job is inherently dangerous and I intend to put you in harms way! But I will be right there with you all the way!" Our mission is to serve the public in a moment that is the worst day of their life and at the end of the tour we all go home in one piece!
Thanks Robert!! We need more who feel exactly like you do!!! Be safe!
I’ve always thought of being a firefighter but never really knew what it truly meant, now I am driven and determined more than ever to put everything into being a firefighter even if it means laying down everything I love because I know it will mean everything to me to serve in the line of duty and up hold the values of honor, integrity, and pride for the greater good.
Mark A Outstanding!!
I’ve always dreamed of being a firefighter. Playing dress up as a kid putting that red helmet on and feeling like a super hero, and now that I’m 17 going into my senior year after watching this video I know what I want to do after graduation. Thanks chief
Thanks for your passion buddy!
Did you do it? I'm planning on becoming a firefighter when I'm 18 this may
We have a saying where I am a volunteer firefighter. "Safety is everyone's responsibility."
Absolutely!!
We now add this one to pre-academy orientation.

Sjsmith530 It was our honor!
As my fire career progresses, the meaning of this video changes. And becomes more and more meaningful. It has helped me through some of the hardest challenges. Thank you Chief.
