Setting off at 3 am from Edinburgh we parked up, hiked to the bothy, left our kit and packed lightly to climb Suilven at 710 meters. Not all easy going so watch us as we climb into the clouds.

Big thanks again to my brother for the trip and banter along the way.
I would love to do a kit list but sadly i don't feel the urge to promote any brands for no return. Maybe in the future when brands and makers reach out that will change.

Mine weights 2.01 KG with the label, brand new... ETA with 11 pegs though, guess they'd updated the packing list when I bought mine last year.
Always handy stuff👍🏴👍
Cheers Kenny, especially candles, matches and repair stuff haha. its the silly things that just make you feel great and happy a bothy box is there. Steve 👍
I hope you closed that door! 😂😂😂
Stayed there , beautiful spot, bugger to get to 😂
Great bothy but it's going to end up shut soon. Too many people posting it on social media, getting too many visitors. Owners of the bothy not happy.
Now that is sad to hear, there must be some people posting where it is and thats the problem in a way. There is a great bothy further up but you have to book it and has shutters on the windows to prevent people breaking in. Never heard about this owner not being happy but again sad to hear. Thanks for the update and making others aware. Steve 👍
I thought bothys were for everyone?
The mountain bothies association ones are which you can check out on there website but some are private and some are available for hire at a cost. Private ones are hard to find and the owners like to keep the location out of the public so you have to respect that wish. Steve 👍
Most beautiful bothy. Keep it secret.
Nice, I’ve done over 50 nights in my Grampian 2 and it’s been a great buy. Survived 60kph winds up at Fort William when other tents were failing all around. As long as you’re careful about touching the ceiling in the morning with the condensation. I use the “rear” vestibule for storing my food as it keeps it off the ground and covered but if an animal really wants at it then it doesn’t have to destroy the tent to get it.
Grampian 2 is fantastic, way more sturdier than many tents. feel very safe in it. You have tested yours in real proper heavy weather and great to hear that. All good tips and advice for all to read, thanks for sharing. Steve 👍
FFS SO QUIET THEN PLAY YER SHIT MUSIC AGAIN
I would tame the music most people hate it ...but good Job
Nice video. I love listening to wild weather when I'm cozy inside :)
About the bag closing, its like a dry bag, you have to roll it before clipping it shut and it will actually be air tight like a baloon
Thanks for the comment and yeah had a few updating me on this, The way i did it, it wasn't very secure so had to play about with it but got the hang of it now. Thanks again for the comment appreciate it and also to help others. Steve 👍
So If nobody is saying where it is , how did they all find out where it is in the first place ???? found it by chance …naw don’t think so, are you all masons or part of some secret society ?? Believe it or not there is decent people on the hills that not only respect the countryside but donate to it’s up keep . So aye I subscribed not only to your channel but some of your other secretive pals but not any longer pal. I believe (assholes apart ) Everyone deserves the beauty of our wee country so hope you enjoyed it
Thanks for the comments, this bothy in particular is a private one and with the respect and wishes of the owner they prefer that people don't disclose where it is. You will probably find that there are many bothies like that around Scotland and some you have to pay a fee to stay in, thats just the way things are so if people get upset, angry or annoyed about it then hey it doesn't effect me in anyway shape or form. Check out the Mountain Bothies Association website there are many bothies in it that you can stay in and all fantastic in there own way. Steve 👍
Just awesome - loved the whole thing, the footage etc awesome!
Well thank you for finding the channel and thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it. Steve 👍
Hi! Enjoying you Challenge so far, good to see you are too. Just one little note, the tea, coffee and biscuits at Mar Lodge are laid on by the ranger there, Ben Dolphin, (of Benvironment fame, blog, FB, Twitter and columnist) on behalf of the National Trust for Scotland. Tarfside is where the hostel is run by Challenge volunteers during the Challenge 😉 Off to watch the rest of your Challenge now!
Hello Louise, well thank you for watching i appreciate that. Thanks for the correction on the Tea's they done a fab job and was a lovely stop to rest the feet and catch up with fellow TGO Challengers. I did stop at Tarfside to and that was very appreciative of the tea, bacon roll and other goodies available to boost moral in the pouring rain. Hope you manage to catch more of the adventures and hope you get something from them. I wont be doing the TGO in 2025 as i have another long adventure trail in the planning around the same time but all exciting. Thanks again Steve 👍
@Campingonthewildsidescotland it's always a lovely break there! This year we got some respite from the heat just before the storm and downpour 🙈
Totai disagree with your lets make money on utube sponcer, me buy my gear lets face it anyone willing to hike out to remote bothies are not your local neds who want to trash the place. So any keen hiker fisherman who wants to hike its called eagles nest bothie google it and enjoy your hike and forget about selfish people who think they own all these places wild camping is free in Scotland
What is the song at the beginning, please? Love it!
Hello sure the song is called April Sky by Ten Towers. You can find them on You Tube but i use Epidemic Sound for my videos so they are also there. I had a listen again and its fantastic to listen to. Hope this helps, thanks for watching the video. Steve 👍
Another fabulous video diary, great to see some winter visitors, Whopper Swans at the start. That Golden Eagle though looks more like a White Tailed Sea Eagle, broader thicker wing and shortish fan like tail. Fabulous to see.
Thats for the comments Jim, swans were a bit of a surprise to see they added a nice touch in the stillness. I did question my thoughts on the Eagle, i did pause and zoom in but wasn't sure so thanks for pointing that out. Never seen a White tailed Eagle before and didn't stay long sadly. but still absolutely fantastic to see. Steve 👍
Outstanding mountain man, views are brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!
Well thank you, gives it a different outlook when the weather turns. Shows how quick the weather closes in but still a great mountain to climb. Steve 👍
Hi Steve. WOW, that brought back some great memories for me mate, thank you so much for taking us along. 3 years ago now me and Dad, walked from the car park at Glencanisp Lodge to the bothy and then to the foot of Suilven. It was such a warm day and my Dad was really struggling in the heat so we just sat down had our sandwiches and then walked back. We may not have got to the top of the mountain, and yes, I think it is defiantly a mountain, just look at her, but what an amazing few hours. I made a promise then to myself and Suilven that I will be back. All the best mate. I'm just packing my rucksack for an adventure this Saturday in the Lake District, and my Camping on the Wild Side mug will be going in as always. 🥾⛰🏴🏴🏕️
Painting some amazing memories there Dave hold on to them. A small world, we did look at coming in from the side but is longer walk in but in the sun would have been fantastic. The bothy is brilliant and well worth a stop over if you get back. Not much shelter mind from the heat during the summer so hope next time its cooler and you get to the top. I would do it again and hope for better weather haha. The tea and coffee are filling that cup well Dave and glad to see. I have booked tickets for the Camping ExPo weekend next year in Birmingham if you didnt know about that. Cheers again Steve 👍
Thank you for bringing us on your adventures! I love foggy weather. Where my family comes from in Nova Scotia there is a lot of fog so it feels a bit like home. Not so great for mountain views but still lovely. Makes the fire in the bothy all the more cozy I'm sure.
Hello Tiana Your welcome, the clouds and mist were just hugging the tops all day which was annoying, I agree the mist can make things very creepy and eery in the right location, would have been nice to get a clear window to video up the top but that the way it is. Way to windy for the drone which was a shame, even windy where i put it up, i kept getting a warning message on the screen for wind but i got something. I think we have similar countries for weather. Steve 👍
what equipment do you use for filming? great vid by the way!
Hello thanks for the comment So my main camera is the Sony Cybershot HD made in 2013 so nothing special, i use this because the batteries last for a long time and a bit scratched. The phone i use is a Samsung Galaxy S10 if i remember correctly and the newest addition is my DJI Drone the Mini 3 Pro still learning the features of this. I would love to get a new camera if a brand was to reach out to donate one haha but for now it does fine. Thank you for watching Steve 👍
Such an amazing and beautiful video, for me much of the beauty of Scotland is the obscured scenery, the fog, mists and clouds all contributing to the splendor of the moment...incredible. I love the system of Bothy's as well, adding their own mark on the landscape, with each having a story to tell. Much respect and appreciation from the USA.
Aww thank you for the kind words, its a magical place and its a real treat when there is no mist or cloud to get a real good view. Bothies are fantastic here well used many lovely people come through the doors spending hours chatting. Big thank you from the Scottish to the USA viewers. Steve 👍
Great video well done 👏
Great video well done and thanks for sharing it with us 👍
Thanks for watching Graham 👍 Steve
Bothy box a fantastic idea
I agree only way to comment is on my replies to others but your bothy box is an amazing idea
@@21shubunkin Thanks you again for the kind comments. A nice gesture to help others which may find that kind of thing useful in a little emergency.
You both certainly left it cleaner than you found it. I wish others would do the same, good on you both.
Totally agree, it doesn't take much to give things a quick tidy up. Time is irrelevant when you are away in the wilds so i dont understand why some ruin it for the many who do help. I dont think that will ever change but as long as we do our bit then other may follow. Thanks for the comment. Steve 👍
HI Steve, wonderfully soothing again. I've re-watched the first two videos, time to re-watch this one later this evening. All the best mate.
Cheers Dave thanks for that. Will be going away up North with my brother for a climb at the end of the month for 3 days so looking forward to that. Steve
@@Campingonthewildsidescotland Brilliant stuff Steve, you will have a great time for sure, probably be some decent snow about then too. My mate was very jealous of my new Camping on the Wild Side mug when we had our wild camp on Friday! Haha
@@DAoutdoors yeah its getting alot colder up here now so the mountains may have a dusting on them soon. Dig out the thicker sleeping bag now haha. Haha fantastic Dave glad the jealousy has started hope its holding a good hot brew for you. Steve
If you feel you can donate a pound or two to help the channel then feel free here - buymeacoffee.com/campingonthewildside
Being a local I never take Loch Doon for granted. It's on my back door step.
Its a great place down there, although these days with the sunny weather it can be busy. getting a little spot to relax is so nice but over all beautiful scenery. Steve 👍
@@Campingonthewildsidescotland Ten years or so ago. Some days even in good weather you could go the entire length of the Loch up and back. Without passing say 6 cars. Not now.
@@LordBelial1978 i think many places are like that, most of my camping video are all remote and out the way to get some breathing space. Are you a wild camper yourself?
@@Campingonthewildsidescotland No I don't camp. My dad used to. He started in a tent on Loch Doon. Then moved to a caravan. He had used the loch as his only holiday destination for a little over 52 years. Before they put those boulders in. I am a carer. Armchair traveler is the best I can do.
@@LordBelial1978 a few good memories at Loch Doon then. I am sure many more boulders will be put in where car churn up the road side edge. Good to see you as a =n armchair traveler and a good interest Steve
use trekking pole for the rear raised forthe guy line takes the outer from the inner
Not sure if you’ve seen but a few people use a trekking pole behind the tent, to lift the outer away from the inner. It essentially means that the middle guy line tensions upwards, wraps around the pole and then heads back downwards to the ground to secure it. Might be handy if you use a pole and it would mean you wouldn’t have to mod the tent. Good video btw!
Hello thanks for the comment, yeah i have used the trekking pole a few time and works a treat. You worded that way better than i did in my other videos so thanks for bringing that up. With the trekking pole in place it still has a bit of sagging at each side or end, nothing major but i have seen patches you bond to the outer and guy line them to pull they bits out so might do that. The tent still functions well without the ends tied out its just being picky i think since i do use the tent alot and probably worth doing for the long term. Steve 👍
that fire looks less than safe....
I would agree but since its not run or maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association its not seen as a priority. Its more a private bothy, so would be up to that owner to sort that. Cheers for the comment Steve 👍
Bobcat or phox 2 people?
Good question, my daughter has the Phox 2 and its a great tents, i guess the Phox has more room to manoeuvre but not for sitting up and you cant cook in the Phox. Bobcat i find has a great door system that gives you a few options on how to open it. Downside to Bobcat its tight for space and rucksack and kit are in the porch area and takes up most of the space there. On a plus for both tents they are both equally solid and can take a good battering in the wind. My choice is the Bobcat only because i like to be able to cook and sit up in a tent. Steve 👍
The bothy box is a great idea. Very kind and thoughtful. I'm sure the next people will appreciate it very much.
I agree Tiana, can be a bit of a life saver in some ways but for just general users having simple candles and lighters in the bothy can change someones mental state so i find doing them makes me feel good that others appreciate them. Steve
Hi Steve. Here I am sat tapping away at my works computer, listening to your adventure imagining in me being there. I love these podcasts. Even though I’ve watched the videos just listening brings a whole new aspect to the experience. 😀🥾⛰🏕️🏴🏴
Well thats fantastic to hear Dave. I do listen to them back to see what they sound like but even better when you get feedback from people, so thank you for your honesty. Steve 👍
Sounds like a wonderful night. We have a wood burning fireplace and use it a lot. Helps get through the long Canadian winter. We've had a lot of rain lately, which I love because it makes the fire that much more cozy. Nothing better than adding some good food and good company to the mix. You are a great story teller and we really enjoy your podcasts 😊❤
@@TianaBaker-ej3fl aww really good to hear that, i can paint that picture of the long harsh winters you have. Charlie is great company and gets stuck into helping out and loves exploring different places. Long dark cold wet night with good food and company to share stories and thought are treasured. Its making memories and when you just let the adventure unfold you never know what happens or things you find to make it memorable. Steve
Hi Steve, loved listening to this, very calming and soothing. I’m going to go back and rewatch the video. Thank you mate. I’m hoping to get a wild camp in myself this Friday evening. The first opportunity to use my new camping on the wild side mug. 😀 All the best mate 😀🥾⛰🏕️🏴🏴
Hello Dave nice to hear from you. Thanks very much on doing that, the podcasts go in to a little bit more like describing things and the smells and feelings which is pretty hard to do on a video for time. Its nice to do them and allows people to listen anywhere without being tied to a video. I hope you manage to make many memorable cups of tea and hot drinks in the Wilds look forward to seeing them. Fantastic to hear from you Dave. Steve 👍
Protection of our Highland Bothy Shelters isn't a bad thing. Bothies are a Blessing and could save lives. Any serious hiker would understand the need for geographic privacy. 👣💙🏴
That the original and historical use for them and long may that continue. I very serious weather its a welcome sight and been in them shoes a couple of times so they are a vital place of shelter and warmth. Steve
Our remote bothies have to be protected mostly and some bothies do need protection, care less bothy visitors leaving trash, graffiti, reckless damage, etc spoil it for other more serious hikers but safety n respect for the blessing of remote bothies matters wherever you go. Could save lives. Great video. 🏴👣💙🙏
Hello Elizabeth thanks for reaching out, I do agree and is a shame people leave a mess its not difficult to take it away so its down to education and behaviour. There are a few private bothies they you need to book or not let on where they are. Damage and rubbish stands out more than the scenery which is such a shame but fingers crossed that can and will change. Thanks again for the comment Steve
Hi Steve! I hope you and your family are well. I have an idea for you - with Halloween coming it would be fun to hear some bothy ghost stories on a podcast or a video. 😊
Hello Tiana nice to hear from you, yeah all the family are well as i hope you all are to. Sounds an interesting thing to do. I am actually away camping with my brother at the end of this month for 3 days but i have thought about some small things to do before that which are not far off what you are saying. I think every bothy is haunted and each have very interesting stories haha. Steve
@@Campingonthewildsidescotland sounds great! I'm sure they are all haunted. If I lived in a place as lovely as a bothy I wouldn't want to leave either if I was a ghost 😊
Just back from a trip in the Galloway Forest. Really enjoyed this post. Thank you.
Thank you for letting me know, glad you liked it and hope you had a fantastic time in the Galloway Forest, so much to explore. Steve 👍

Gosh,what a jem of a spot!
Looks lovely Steve, can't get much better than that...!👍
i have the same tent payed £100 for it a couple of weeks ago and i have been out twice and i luv it buddy and if you want to see that tent in 45 mph to 50 mph winds and in snow check out ant survive the night and you will see it in some bad conditions and happy camping
Hello, absolutely fantastic been out in this a few times now and its as hard as nails haha. Been out in some windy conditions but maybe not 50 mph but that would have been a wild night for sure. I bought some patches to attach to the flysheet corners to pull the tent out a bit. Seen a couple of videos on that to stop the fly touching and give a little breathing space. I will do an up dated video on how that is pitched sometime. Steve 👍
Love beach fires!
Looks like a nice path for a rainy day. Not muddy, narrow or slippery. With good rain gear and a coffee at the end looks like a nice afternoon!
Hello Tiana This the forest track up to the Singing Sands beaches. fantastic woodland to walk through and the rain makes it very interesting. Loads of bird noise which was nice to hear. Steve
Looks like the approach to Laggan beach from the Ardverikie Gate Lodge.🤔
Hi Fraser this is the forest track leading to Singing Sands beaches its about a three mile walk from the little car park but the beaches are fantastic. Steve
Hi Steve - great vid - although there is a rather glaring mistake - The hills actual height is 1036 feet not the 387 as stated on your vid Cheers
Hi Steve, loved that. I did plan on making a brew in my new Camping on the Wildside mug and listening to it. Instead I listened to it in the car on my way to walking in the Lake District yesterday. All the best mate. 😀🥾⛰🏕️🏴🏴
Cheers Dave glad you got to listen to it in the car, maybe makes your journey more interesting or quicker i hope. Fantastic you have the mug Dave hope you get plenty use out of it and take it away on your hiking trips. A fantastic place to get out and about is the Lakes. Steve 👍
I use the over the ear wireless headphones as I always have the same issue with the ear plugs. Then I use an old black COVID face mask over my eyes. You look stupid but sleep well.
Ahh see it the little tricks Paul, might look into that. I think part of it is being warm and cosy in your sleeping bag and then the ear plugs and eye covering. I need to try this. Cheers Steve 👍
