How To Keep Your Electronics From Crackling
How To Keep Your Electronics From Crackling
Our guitar electronics work mechanically, with metal touching metal, so by leaving your switch and pots in your preferred positions all the time, corrosion can build up in the other positions that are open and exposed. Once a month, “use” all of your electronics: spin your pots back and forth a dozen times, flip your switches back and forth a dozen times, and plug & unplug a cord into your output jack a dozen times. If you remember to do this each month, your electronics could last forever.
Full disclosure: I did end up replacing all three pots in that vintage Gretsch, even though I was able to clean up the independent volume pots (the one in the upper bout is the master volume). It’s better to replace all the pots at once so that when (if) they start to go bad again, all of them go bad at the same time. Particularly in a hollow body, since accessing the electronics isn’t as easy. It would suck to have to replace one pot at a time each year, for example.

Time lapse: installing electronics in an ES-335

A quick time lapse video of me installing electronics that I wired into a semi hollow body (it’s actually an Epiphone Dot). The actual time it took was about nine minutes. The tools I used are: tweezers, 1/2” nut driver, the ESP spanner tool, the String Swing guitar jack tool, and an adjustable wrench. The best advice I can give anyone though is to use wires that aren’t flimsy but not too stiff...
Parallel Wiring vs Series Wiring: Explained & Demo’d

Parallel Wiring vs Series Wiring: Explained & Demo’d Parallel wiring is the standard way most guitars are wired. The dc resistance output when two pickups are in parallel is: (neck pickup X bridge pickup) divided by (neck pickup bridge pickup). If both pickups are 8k dc resistance, the output in parallel is 4k. In series wiring, the signal goes from one pickup into the other, essentially functi...
Coil Tapping vs Coil Splitting: Explained & Demo’d

Coil Tapping vs Coil Splitting: Explained & Demo’d “Coil tapping” is only something that can be done to single coil pickups that have been built with a tap: when winding, the coil can be tied off at one point (tap) then continued to wind to the full output and then the guitar can be wired to access each output. “Coil splitting” is turning one coil off of a humbucker that’s built with four condu...

Sweet pickups sound way better than peaveys. Once im done building mine im going to order some.
@@GNJ1118 fantastic. Thank you.
@@stonewallinstruments you're welcome
I want a set! These look killer.
@@JeremySheppard -fantastic!! You can order them directly from my website. I make two sets… one that has alnico V rod magnets in both positions, and one that has alnico III rod magnets in the neck position and Jaguar sized P90 construction in the bridge position, for those who want the most versatility. And just email me if you have any questions. www.StonewallPickups.com
Nice luthier's knot!
@@neogeoriffic they are the bane of my existence.
That was one thirsty fretboard
Absolutely!! It was nearly thirty years old, unplayed in the past two decades, and had never been in to see a professional. I’d been waiting to make this video until someone brought in a guitar with seriously old strings.
Fantastic! Just saw your T40 Pup video. Smooth as fuck
How much do these pickups run?
pain in the ass is a hell of a good name for it
Can you show a clean tone?
Good Day. Nice demonstration. Thank You & Best Regards.
Thank you.
Short, concise, and to the point. Nice.
Thank you.
This always bugs me so much on videos where they simply should know better... well done!
Thank you very much.
Excellent thank you. I've used other methods where I cut the string before I wrap, and it's been hit and miss with regards to string slippage. This is quicker and much more effective. Kudos 👏🏻
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I’m really glad this video was helpful for you.
Good video.
Thank you.
what madman decided to wire in a fuzz circuit hoooLY
Specifically on this one?? That would be me. Then I approached my friend, Electric Squid, to make the circuit for my loaded pickguards. But we’re far from the first. I believe people started playing around with that idea in the mid 1960s.
@@stonewallinstruments you will have a new customer in me very soon
unbutton that shirt more
GREAT LESSON THANK YOU.
Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to say that.
At last a simple explanation how to do this correctly. Once I got this correct way I was stringing my guitar very quickly. I can’t thank you enough.
That’s fantastic. I’m very glad I was able to help you.
Any guitar stringing technique that works is the best way. Period.
he doesn't even have a plastic string winder? Skip it.
You take an issue with the drill attachment?? Your comment means nothing to me.
no; you assert what I did not say.
When re-stringing, i noticed you went from the low E down then high E upwards. Is this proper technique? I usually go from low E to High E
That’s a good question. The funny thing is that I was just discussing this exact thing today in the guitar repair class I teach. I wouldn’t say either way is correct or incorrect. I would phase this as “starting with the tuners closest to the nut and working up to the top of the headstock.” The reason is so that the G and B strings aren’t in my way when I’m winding the high E string. My apprentice goes low E to high E; he’s been with me for five years and I can’t talk him out of it. Neither way is correct or incorrect.
You didn't slack off the strings before you cut them. Wouldn't that sudden release of tension be too much of a "shock" to the guitar?
No, that’s a common misconception. One of so many misconceptions about the guitar. That’s why I did it on camera. It seems most people believe that guitars are more fragile than they are. You’re not alone. It’s unfortunate that the people who sell guitars don’t show the buyers how to care for and maintain guitars as well as dispel any misconceptions. It’s been going on for decades so the misinformation is getting almost out of control.
Thanks for clearing up my "mistakes" LOL , Great video - so concise !!!
Каробке бомжааа
great video thanks
Thank you.
Great video.camera shots very clear
Thank you very much.
pull back the string one fret and wind :)
Sorry, but any time I hear someone claim they have THE correct way to restring a guitar, I stop watching. There are at least five perfectly effective methods. I'm sure the method posted in this clip works, but it's complete bull$hit to say it's the only correct way.
Apology accepted. And thank you for commenting on my video… it helps popularize videos so that it shows up in more feeds. Views-per-week have doubled in the past month on this video thanks to comments such as yours. Why do you watch so many restringing videos if you already know five different ways to restring your guitar?? I made this video for people who don’t know how to restring their guitar or feel uncertain about how they’re restringing their guitars. Don’t forget that there are literally hundreds of people learning how to play guitar for the first time every day… and they need help with things like learning how to restring their guitars.
@@stonewallinstruments Fine, just stop claiming to have THE correct way. That is a false assertion. Carry on oh wise one, LOL.
@@mxgr194 I didn’t capitalize the word “the” and I never used the word “only”.
@@stonewallinstruments No, you didn't. I emphasized that to point out the arrogance of claiming to have the correct method. Do carry on though.
Good lord this is so unnecessary.
Honestly this sounds awesome. It would be cool if it was a fuzz auto wah. Seriously considering this for my Jazzmaster build
That would be very cool.
The Business end!!
Tone beyond!!!
Thank you.
Excellent video!!! Best teacher ever! Very helpful for me! Thank you very much for sharing and your support! Best wishes always!
Thank you so much!!
Here's the CORRECT WAY TO RESTRING A GUITAR......AND ALL THESE VIDEOS SHOW..THIS WAY..AND THAT WAY....WELL, I'M HERE TO MAKE IT LESS CONFUSING, LESS COMPLICATED, AND LESS BS.....THE ABSOLUTE...WITHOUT A DOUBT....BEST WAY TO RESTRING A GUITAR.....YOU READY FOR THIS......WHAT EVER WORKS BEST FOR YOUR STYLE OF PLAY......IGNORE ALL THESE HOW TO VIDEOS.....IT'S YOUR GUITAR....IF IT WORKS AND IT STAYS IN TUNE....THERE YOU GO.....
There’s a lot of anger here. Are you okay?? Happy Holidays. Your comment seems to be for people who know how to restring their guitars. The majority of people who watch this video don’t know how to restring their guitars or they feel insecure in the method they restring their guitars. Don’t forget that there are dozens of people beginning to learn how to play guitar every day. And overlapping wraps on the post can cause tuning issues so some people do need help with this. I made this video because people were asking for help and I’ve worked on a lot of guitars that weren’t strung up properly (by any definition).
Ok, these sound phucking awesome. Commendable that you mixed the different magnets, Alnico 3 and 5 for maximum "release". Well played. But what's in the Bridge again? Maybe I'm not picking up what you laid down
Thank you. The bridge pickup is a P90 construction with steel polepiece screws and two ceramic bar magnets. I don’t advertise that the bar magnets are ceramic because of the stigma but if they’re used properly, they can be very beneficial.
@@stonewallinstruments Thanks, much appreciated. And I agree.
Well done. Thank you.
Thank you.
Great vid 👊🏼. I have been using the lock method like this since 1987 😅. However, I learned something in more recent times that took my tuning stability to a whole new level. That is to use both pencil lead and 3 in 1 oil in the nut slots. I guess I missed this lesson somehow in the past. Now I can jam doing crazy bends on my guitars for a week straight and it holds tune. Rock on 🤘, in tune!!!
Thank you. I use 3-in-1 Oil on fingerboards to keep them hydrated.
Just saw this today, one of the best [edit: *the* best] stringing videos I've seen. Is my go-to instruction now. Very helpful, well done.
Thank you very much.
Way better than elbowing it
Hes on secret wheels you cant see
:O I've been playing for 17 years....and this is news to me, thank you so much.
Happy to help.
Just don't uncoil it by passing the end through the loop. Works on hoses too.
Absolutely.

Awesome guitar, indeed. Thank you for sharing. Greetings!
Thank you.

If the ball at the bridge is held in bridge when you wrap over the post you have created a twist in the sting and this will cause the intonation to become an issue. I know this because we tested on a stobe tuner and there was a issue with intonation. I find it just as easy to wrap the string over as apposed to twisting it for the 1st wrap.
This really helped me! Thank you it no longer looks like total shit xD
Love that you show both angles on this. It really helps me understand what to do! This is so much clearer and direct than every other video I watched.
Thank you so much.
There seem to be strong opinions on this issue. Having been restringing guitars for 50+ years now, I would only say "Calm down", many ways work just fine. I've tried them all.
That ain’t gonna happen he’s “ stonewall “ lol
I really dig the story behind the guitar! It's fun to see you breathe new life into something with sentimental value. This type of vid is way more interesting than the disposable 'gear of the day' stuff being churned out on UA-cam. Also, nice jorts.
Thank you. Dude… it was 2001. I was seventeen and it was the last time I ever wore shorts.
Excellent. There are dozens of similar videos on UA-cam, but this is really the only one you need. Clear, concise, well-explained - and the presenter is one of the few to understand that choosing camera angles which avoid shots of hands getting in the way is vitally important.
Thank you so much.
