Rawtherapee - L*a*b Adjustments Tool
Переглядів 8 тис.5 років тому
In this tutorial I explain how to use the L*a*b Adjustments tool, which is one of the tools I use the most in rawtherapee. I first quickly explain the different sliders. Starting at around 4:50 I do actually process the image using just the L*a*b Adjustments tool. Done in rawtherapee 5.6, though the L*a*b Adjustments have been around for awhile, so this works also fine in older versions. Furthe...

Processing multiple exposures

I had shot at that location before and had messed up the focus, so it was planned to go there again. This time I had checked the weather and it looked promising. I just left the house 10 minutes too late.I actually had intended to catch some light pinkish clouds, but I arrived at the site too late and instead got a fiery sky. Still a great motive, I thought and took the shot. Now for the proces...

    Great tutorial. I am new to Raw Therapee but I wasn't satisfied with the 'sharpen only edges' option. It certainly did sharpen the edges very nicely. But it also made after areas in the image soft and mushy. Quite a lot of detail was lost.

    Well Done! Clear and concise, thank you so much, this video quickly gave me what I needed to understand how to use the basic tools. After seeing how drab my RAW photos looked initially in Rawtherapee, I was thrilled to be able to use the same tools you demonstrated, and in a few minutes produce a JPG that was much better than even the out-of-camera JPG.

    Hi. Thanks for the video. How much benefit does this have over processing a RAW file with a middle exposure? As a beginner it feels that converting to TIFF would lose too much data to be worthwhile.

    • @sushifries3585
      @sushifries3585 4 роки тому

      Well converting to tiff shouldn't lose too much data as it is actually a higher bit rate than the original raw. About why I use multiple exposures: I quite often only use one exposure if all the interesting parts are not blown out or just black. In some cases the dynamic range of the image is just too big to be captured by just one image and then you will need multiple exposures. A program like hugin, which I used here, or actually any program that fuses multiple exposures will make some local adjustments in order to get a "good looking" fused image. So, in case one exposure alone would contain all the relevant data, the end result will be still be different if you use multiple fused exposures or just one. This effect may be subtle or stronger depending on the image. So in the end all I can say is compare the two and see which ine works for you.

Otherwise I would point you to the pixls.us forum, where rawtherapee, darktable and other image processing software is discussed and many of the developers roam. That's a very informative video, all very well explained. I've used the Lab space for many years now (although recently, I also played around more with RGB space, also both together) and have come to like Lab a lot. Actually, I quite quickly moved to Lab when I started with RawTherapee many years ago because with RGB space you are always also affecting saturation (you mentioned this as well) which did not fit my desired style. So a lot of what you described in the video was not new to me - but thanks a lot for the explanation of the HH control (I actually didn't know that you are simply changing a hue to the left or right neighbor)! And I also got some inspiration on how I could use CC, LC and CL. BTW, what's your opinion on first applying some improvements through the general lightness, contrast and saturation sliders for Lab and then some more fine-tuning with the Lab curves?

    • @sushifries3585
      @sushifries3585 5 років тому

      Hi I often do that: first aplly general improvements using lightness, contrast etc. and then use the durves for more specific adjustments. That is a perfectly fine approach!

    How to compare what we are doing with the original image? How can I toggle between my editing and the original RAW image? No tutorial is saying this.

    • @sushifries3585
      @sushifries3585 5 років тому

      Around 1:51 I show the left panel. There you can find the "history". It contains all the processing steps. There you can go to the beginning (before any prcessing was done) to see the original raw file. The easiest way would be to add a snapshot of the raw file after you open it (also on the left panel at the bottom). Then you could always switch back to the raw and by clicking the last step in the history (or adding another snapshot of you current processing) you could compare them.

    LOL - don't try "correcting" curved lines on your Parthenon shots - there's nary a straight line anywhere on that monumental edifice. The Greeks were so advanced, they understood how we actually don't often see straight lines at all, any more than a fisheye lens does. Every lens including our eyes', will produce a curve from a straight line unless the line intersects precisely in the center of the image/planar tangent to the lens. Such applied "corrections" to images are useful to architectural renderings and such, but presuming this is a necessary procedure for every image is a mistake.

    hey I have a question so when editing my photos and I do auto levels in the exposure tab, it doesn't do a good job if anything it always blows it out, does it have to do with the original settings I used to shoot my photo?

    • @sushifries3585
      @sushifries3585 6 років тому

      It shouldn't, unless your original settings where such that everything is blownout already. I have no good answer. Please go to the rawtherapee forum (discuss.pixls.us/c/software/rawtherapee) and ask there. The developers are there and can surely answer your question.

    • @z1522
      @z1522 5 років тому

      It shouldn't always be off in the same direction; it's making educated guesses based on algorithms expecting certain sorts of average scene distributions. A moody dark cloudy scene needs to remain darker, and bluer than a sunny one, and the system will usually exaggerate brightness; also, auto tends to always shift predominant color hues towards their compliments. As long as the monitor is calibrated, adjusting for mood and overall sense of accuracy, then making aesthetic or artistic tweaks within reason, is a good overall work flow approach. Advanced controls can expand detail within dark shadows, reduce bleached out highlight areas, as well.
