Sow and Tare
United States
Приєднався 13 лис 2021
Welcome to Sow and Tare! "Sow" means to plant--for most people this is to plant seeds to grow-it can also be used to start something in motion. You can sow a seed, sow a thought, or sow an action. "Tare" means to reset from where you are measuring from--for most people this means to put a container on a scale and make it so the container weight reads zero and is not calculated in the weight of whatever you are weighing. This could also mean to take measure only of the stuff you want--the good stuff. I am on nearly 70 acres in USDA Planting Zone 8b in Douglas County, Oregon with a hay field, pasture, garden, and lots of forest. I raise meat rabbits and chickens. I have big plans for the property to be more self-sufficient and look forward to sharing the process with you. I preserve food via dehydrating, canning, freezing, and freeze drying. I am always teaching people wherever I go and whatever I do, so this was a natural progression for me to share information with more people.

Ringo is a very handsome fella
I'm guessing the plants in the cold frame are goners?
SO DANG happy you posted this video!!! I am a seed hoarder especially Baker's Creek. I have been buying their seeds for about 20 years. My 5th order since OCT. from them will arrive Monday. Thank you so much. It was great to actually see the peppers & winter squash I ordered.
Yea! Good luck with your garden!
I had 2 Halls Hardy Almond trees for several years. I also had elderberries. You are starting with a lot of things I did 26 years ago. All 3 of my Heritage Red Raspberries from Stark Bros did not come up. Planted in June and were supposed to come up for fall. I'll be putting in a claim on them. I love seeing you get these!
They should replace them alright.
@@sowandtare I was waiting because I hoped maybe they will come up in the spring? Then go ask for a replacement. My fingers are crossed. If not I will go to my local Rural King and we get what they carry. Heck I think even Walmart gets them or used to.
2nd like. I wish I could plant trees, but hard to find places for them when you are in an apartment. You have found a great varies in this trip. Blessings.
I was pleasantly surprised. I wish you could too!
That is a fine selection of baby bunnies!❤️
Awww...I agree
Sometimes we go off on random topics??? More like all the time lol. But love it
True...always a good conversation!
Learning about local mushrooms is a 2025 goal! I'm in!
Yea! Let me know of any good resources you come along.
Makes me wonder what (if anything) the previous owner did to get rid of excess water.
I don't know.
At least, using this video, you will know exactly what areas you need to address. Blessings.
Exactly! Thank you!
If you ask for chili out here your going to get asked red or green and get something very different. Yum im going to make this expecially on this cold day. Great tips and video, love it! Thanks Katrina ps. We're in our pantry challenge thing and this is perfect
This one isn't a spicy version, although I have made it spicy in the past. That's what makes meals such as chili so great, you can have so much variability and use what you have available to you.
11
We'll find out soon!
I live near Eugene, the native veggies I’m growing are: cattail, miner’s lettuce, checkermallow, early blue violets, Oregon oxalis, and spring bank clover. Mostly I have root veggies, though: yarrow, Columbia lily, tolmi cat ear lily, checked lily, white fawn lily, wapato, and camas.
Awesome! Thanks for the list!
Still listening lol. Sometimes there are county programs where you can get a voucher to spay for free. Check into it...
It still does not allow me to use Apple Pay?
I'm sorry, I don't know how UA-cam does their payment system or if they allow Apple Pay.
Excellent video and info, thanks Katrina :).... turkey smoothy 😅 seal that water, then you have some sterilized water holding the jars place
You're welcome!
Uggg! The sound messed up. Something is going on with my program. Sorry guys!
Eggs at the natural food store here in Nor Cal are only $4/dozen. I don't need to buy eggs and share the abundance too!
Wow! That's cheap!
I think that Percy is a little jealous that the ladies get all the loving. LOL. Perhaps that was why he dumped his fresh water. That one kitty has a raccoon tail.
He gets plenty of loving...he's just not first because Ravioli is a jealous rabbit who needs first and last pets or else she gets mischievous.
A higher AH battery will provide a longer run time but they take longer to charge. They also make 3AH-12AH sizes I beleive. It might be worth trying to siphon, rather than pump the water off the top of the hill. If it works you won't have to tend batteries and it will get rid of the water above the house.
Thanks! That's what I was seeing with the battery sizes, but did not know they went up to 12 AH. Good call on the potential for using a siphon. Once a French drain is installed, I shouldn't have to worry about it.
Too much hose length
Yep, but like I said in the video, I had to use what I had, and it worked. I did have a shorter one, but it broke entirely when I went to uncoil it, and the one it comes with wouldn't straighten out and was not very flexible or long enough, so this is what I was left with. It works, so I'm happy with the result.
@sowandtare sorry Go ryobi!!
@greylynnjr It's ok. It was a good observation if it wasn't working well, a shorter hose would produce a faster suction. In this case, it worked!
Rain, Rain, go away. It's a full time job moving that water with the pump. You might end up the queen of batteries. Figure out how many you need but then you will be running out there every 15 minutes anyway. My back yard was like this. We were lucky to put drains under ground running into the alley ditch. The yard fills up and it drains in about a day. My daughter's house is just like what you are fighting the same kind of step down. I can't remember what we had her do there. The other side of her house on the big hillside she has a 6' tall retaining wall and we dug a drain area along side and sunk some pipes to drain it. We had to make a little crack across her drive way by the garage door to drain water off the hill through and out. Otherwise her basement garage filled up ankle deep. She ended up dry but it was a lot of work and I don't remember what all we did exactly.
That's a lot of water! 3 batteries works for me, plus, it's a temporary situation before the French drain is installed. Once that is installed, storms should be smoother-going.
@@sowandtare That's great. I know we put in drains but they were not named lol. Fingers crossed for your rain to stop for you!
@dawns.2492 Thanks!
Nice testing video. I wonder if it would be worth it to contact Ryobi and see if they would be interested in your review.
I probably should.
Oh Katrina, this was very hard on you. But you will get ahead of it all soon. I know you. Blessings
Thank you! Yes, lots of stress, especially the next day--video will be out about that later. The transfer pump worked great though, and there is no standing water going into this next storm cycle, so that's good.
Is there a book that illustrated and talks about these edible foods?
Thank you for this topic.
There are a lot of books about edible snd medicinal plants of the Pacific Northwest. I have a lot of them, and unfortunately, none of the ones I have have everything in them. I should make a resource book video. Please remind me in a couple months if I haven't done so yet.
You are welcome! There will be more to come!
You seem stressed. Your presentation needs to appear more relaxed. Loved the cat BTW. Almost forgot love the topic.
Thank you
Great video
Thank you!
Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to drink. LOL. Hate that feeling of being watched, it is a branch of fear of the unknown, which is a very strong fear. When you know what is watching you, then it isn't so bad. Even if it was a cougar then you would know how to handle it. It is when you don't know what it is, then you don't know how to protect yourself. Wow, you have some nice "water falls". My goodness, you have lots of water to deal with.
Yep!
Homesteading is my second full time job. Yesterday was up to 50 mph winds. I had to take the tarp off of the chicken run or the frame was going to be torn apart. I had just finished an amazingly stout hutch and ended up putting a silver fox bucks in it, right before his hutch blew over, despite having a ground screw and tie down ratchet strap. I had another Florida white buck whose hutch flipped over completely. He was fine, besides being completely offended. All future hutches will be built to Sherman tank specifications. Building to the needs of the worst weather is hard to remember when you are building in the best weather. My head lamp is my "right hand man" for after dark animal checks or working on projects when the sun is gone too early. So many of us do this. Thanks for your thought processes.
Wow! Sorry your boys had a roller coaster ride! I hope everyone is ok. Building for the worst and hoping for the best is always a good thing!
Merry Christmas!!
To you as well
Merry Christmas!
To you as well!
@@sowandtareyou found beautiful plants for your arrangement. Hope you had a lovely Christmas.😊
@donnamckinley9807 Thank you, I hope you did as well.
9:20 Missing the show Enoch! Two week break is just too long. 😂😂
He deserves a few weekends off, busy guy!
@ oh, I know. In Previous years it’s been a longer break. I’m just being the guy that still complains. Ah hah hah hah 🤣😇 He does a fantastic job with his show! He definitely deserves the break.
Very interesting.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Listening on my lunch break, thanks for mentioning me ❤ roosters are a crowing, lights are on 18 hrs.
Awww, so glad you are getting back into things!
Katrina, I wonder if Santa drinks reindeer milk normally and is tickled by the different types of milk he gets on Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas.
LOL! Merry Christmas to you as well!
Im giggling at the warm environment
LOL...only because you have some "historical knowledge"...
You mentioned the rain coming down. I opened the door to let the dogs out as the live was ending and the rain just started 😅
Nice. It's pouring here.
You can even use the plastic you put on windows, to make one as well. Blessings.
Lots of things can be used...even milk jugs!
If I remember correctly, I think the frame has holes in the corners to anchor it down.
Nice, thanks.
Loved this, yes it was informative. Did she end up feeding the skinny ones more?
They're still smaller, but they will catch up.
@@sowandtare Great!
Very informative and fun. Blessings.
Thank you! Have a great day!
I bet your Mom and Dad loved seeing you! Remi is soo funny and cute. Thank you for sharing your family!
It was good to see them and also to meet Remi.
Tonight will be fun. Looks like a good week. Blessings.
Absolutely!
Do you use a nest box that you know was used by the same rabbit before? Can they smell that another rabbit used it before them?
In the past I have, I did not this time, as it's been so long and all the smells are different. I don't think it makes a difference, although I'm sure they can smell who was there before. If you are concerned about biosecurity between rabbits or between areas, I would use the same one or ones for each rabbit area. I do let them sit in the sun to solarize between litters.
@@sowandtare Wow I didn't think of that. No I just wondered if they were picky if another rabbit used it. I love the solarize in the sun idea. BTW I watched the nest building video too. I'll probably go through your playlist at some point.
@dawns.2492 Yea!
Nice video, but you know the question I have, that I will not post here. LOL. Blessings.
Thanks
They'll pull way more fur she only pull a little she'll pull more if cold out and it look is cold you will see way more fur by morning
Yep! She pulled more, as I suspected. She's a good Mama.
You need to learn your mushrooms. LOL. Great video. Don't worry about what others think, do things in your own time. You know more than they do about what you are facing. Blessings.
LOL, I know! Yeah, lots of things being juggled right now.
You shamed the kitty by stating he was royalty lol
LOL apparently!
