VPA 3 Blade | Review & Range Test
I partnered up with VPA after talking with them on the Generations to Hunt podcast. I really loved what they stand for as a company and can stand behind the products that they make.
VPA makes all sorts of fixed blades: 2 and 3 blade, single and double bevels, from 100-300 grains. All heads are super tough tool steel, built to last, backed by a lifetime warranty, and follows Ashby's 3:1 for superior structural integrity.

Summer Scouting: Spot Prep
Переглядів 482 місяці тому
My 2024 strategy started back in the Spring, finding as many spots as I possibly could. I didn't spend much time after finding one, just marked my Spartan Forge map, and moved onto the next one. Now that summer is here, I'm going back to those spots to prep them for the season. Follow along for three spots!

Very valuable lesson learned recently on the importance of timing your spots on when to hunt. In season scouted a spot last season and just went back in there now to prep the area to monitor with a cam. Now I have a small two week window on when it's hot! barefootdave_

I appreciate the video, I just ran into Mario and Rick from beast gear and they were showing off the stand and didn’t make any mention of this being a new revision either. It seems the spongey feeling at the end has went away aswell. I’m 6’6” 255 and the little flex that was there was acceptable in my opinion.
@@tushers that does seem odd. There will be a little flex but that’s the trade off when it comes to weight savings and portability. I agree that it’s not bad at all.

@@BarefootDave_ you won’t be disappointed
One nice thing about a longer platform (like a Tethrd Predator or longer) is that you can be at the same leaning angle but be slightly further from the tree and so you can run a bit longer of a tether at the same angle and tether height. That is if you typically put your feet towards the back of the platform. This can allow a bit more freedom of movement and clearance for the bow. Of course, there are no solutions, only tradeoffs when it comes to most things in life.
Great tips!
A platform realy needs steps...steps dont realy need a platform
Agreed! They do work great together
What of kinda of strap was that it seemed pretty loud.
Bullman Outdoors HD ratchet. Yes it was loud but like I said, Bullman has a video on how to make it quiet. I would never ratchet it like that in the woods. I’ll take an extra 60 seconds to do it quiet and slow.
It sucks .... But you put all the dots together and figured out a Michigan public land buck.... That's saying something bud.... We hunt a really really hard state I've been chasing deer in Michigan for 30 years and I've had my fair share of blown hunts. Good job and keep at it. 👍👍
Thank you, that means a lot! It is tough and that’s why I love it. It would be awesome to hear what you have learned over the years and how it’s changed with the increased pressure. One last weekend left 🤞
HANDS DOWN BEST MOBILE SET UP ON MARKET BULLMAN OUTDOORS PLATFORM ROS & PLATFORM CLIMBING STEPS EQUAL MOST EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT METHOD WHILE MINIMIZING YOUR GEAR AND MAXIMIZE YOUR HUNT AND SAFETY !
LOVE THE PASSION! Haha. I haven’t used their climbing steps yet, but am very interested in trying it
You need atleast 6 platform steps, I run 8 so I have plenty of footing all way around tree ...
Just a question. Why did you wrap your platform edge with paracord?
To quiet it down and prevent any metal on metal contact. Any clanks will ruin your hunt before it starts.
I will be heading out this weekend after the snow, maybe tomorrow depending on the wind that's coming
That’s a very good idea! I’ll be doing the same. I had a missed opportunity on a buck from last weekend, so going back to the same spot to chase him again. It’ll be easy to find their trails. Good luck!
@@BarefootDave_ right on... Same to you, if the wind is ripping I planned on tackling/ still hunting.
@@normankaster917 man it was a cold weekend! No luck for me
Have you noticed a lot of other hunters/hunter sign? I’ve been wanting to try those parks but I figured they are as blown out as my other spots in the SE.
I tend to not run into that many people, only happened twice this year out of 20 or so times I’ve been out. Here’s what I think: If I’m by other people, then I’m not scouting hard enough to get away from the pressure. Mature deer are going to avoid those areas. If I notice a super blown out spot, I usually film it, but don’t on the random ones here and there. This video and the No Deer November one, I point out 2 spots that were ridiculously crowded.
Thanks for the feedback, would you mind if sent you a dm I’m a new hunter and I’m full of questions.
@@akins2262 yes absolutely! I started this channel to help wherever possible. Hit me up on IG @barefootdave_
Oops forgot to delete a title page break. The video took 5 hours to process and upload, so apologies in advance for not fixing that 😂
I personally never totally disconnect from the tree unless I’m 3’ off the ground.
For sure! It’s definitely very dangerous and safety is something that I do not skip out on!!
Nice vid but I feel like you can hug the tree closer then you showed on film with a platform. I also use a ring of steps and like them but have issues with slipping sometimes and they aren’t as comfy as a normal saddle platform. I may try both at the same time but again setting up a ring of steps is kinda loud and tedious compared to a platform.
You sure can, definitely agree with that and that’s what I try to do as well. But the marketing material from the saddle companies show people shooting from the 9 o’clock position all the time and that’s what I wanted to show. In my opinion, it’s easier to take that 11 o’clock shot from the ROS. Comfort wise, how low are you siting? That could be why it’s not comfy. Knee pads are a requirement too. Also agree on the setup. I feel it’s still worth it though. Having both is the way to go!
OCB buckle for ROS then set the platform over the belt. 👍
I’m trying to avoid having two straps
I have the same steps and if I don’t ratchet them down very hard they slide down the tree each time I try to set them. Any tips?
@baseballslamer24 you definitely have to ratchet them down hard, no way around it. Bullamn Outdoors has a video on how to do it quietly. I just go slow and do one click at a time. Really get it tight around the tree just like you would a platform when you cam lock it.
Dave, Thanks for the video. I currently have a Bullman ring-of-steps and I'm considering getting a platform. I noticed in the video that the shots on the right of the frame allowed you to use the tree for cover while the shot from the left of the frame had you skylighted and in the open. which side was the platform, and which was the ring-of-steps?
Left was platform, shooting at the 9 o’clock position. Right was ROS, shooting at the 11 o’clock position. The benefit of a saddle and ROS is exactly what you said, using the tree as cover!
So my followup question was going to be... have you ever hunted using both ROS and the platform? Well, I found your other video on that very subject. Thanks for the information and excellent videos. Good hunting! @@BarefootDave_
@@gasanchez84 thank you for the sub! I appreciate it. Can’t figure out how to message on here, but if you ever want to see something specific, hit me up on instagram and I’ll get a video around for you! If it’s a big tree, I’ll use both for sure. Especially when the deer might come from anywhere. If it’s a small tree and I know where they’ll be traveling, I’ll just use my platform and still shoot at the 11 o’clock position. I’m one sticking this year so I find it much easier to use just the platform. When I was using sticks plus a separate platform, it wasn’t much more work to use both.
Tuned in from the Beast forum. Man that's a great buck for MI public land. Cool story to go along with it.
Wow thank you so much! That means a lot, appreciate it!
Comment on my hunting journal so I know who you are. Always down to chat with like minded beasts!
Always position the bottom of the plateform to run level with your steps…you’ll have to run two straps but it will allow you to move around the tree much easier👍
With the platform below and steps on top (with one strap), you can go from standing to sitting without adjusting your tether. I typically hunt from the steps but will setup and tear down while standing on the platform. Not needing to adjust my tether makes it all a lot easier.
@@BarefootDave_ it’s really the two eyes from your strap that give your plateform real stability…it’s cutting a corner or step for convince rather than guaranteeing plateform stability from not being able to move out of anchored position…safety first
@@perryrusso3764 hmm I never thought of it that way. The ratchet strap over the platforms post makes it wayyy more secure than just the cam buckle. With the cam buckle, there is still some play until you really can lock it in. The ratchet straps is locked in and barely if any sets when you step on it. To me, it’s actually better than the cam buckle.
I just used a sharpie to add black arrows showing the top and inside. Great idea. Thanks
Glad you found it useful! Good luck this season
Marking the inside and top of the strap is a great idea.
