how to switch beats on drums/switching between styles on drum set/jazz grooves on drums Changing jazz gears on drum set can be tricky. World beats on drums take focus. Rock and jazz grooves on drums take focus. But changing gears on drum set between these genres takes some musical concentration. This is a great exercise for shifting jazz gears on drum set. This is a great video. I’ve been playing 20 years and I know some of the rudiments very well. However, I’ve always struggled with this idea of playing a continuous odd number roll. People explain the rudiments and how to play them in videos just fine. But sometimes it’s really hard to grasp how to play it continuously. This is where many videos lack. You’re one does not. My old drum teacher, a real master of rudiments frequently says ‘of course you can play these continuously!’ Only, I’ve always struggled to see whether I should look at every stroke played evenly spaced. Or whether to have a pause at the end of each group. Your video has been helpful.
@@JCh.41 thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback and I’m so glad to hear that it was helpful!
Nice! Fun stuff there! Sounds good too!
@@Avariche fun stuff indeed! Thanks for watching!
@@drumhighway What's your thoughts on ekits vs acoustic kits for jazz playing?
@@Avariche I think they are fine for practice if that’s what you have or you need to be careful of volume. For actual jazz gigs, not ideal.
@@drumhighway Kind of thought that. There are just some things with acoustics kits that are just special in how it sounds.
I find these simple ideas useful and goods practice? Are you a rudiment on the kit kind of person? Let me know in the comments! Cheers!
Learning to moreso be. I did more back in the quad tom marching days but getting back to it after hiatus from playing. Rust is real with practicing them. Do a Zack Grooves course on Drumeo after doing the 66Samus Double Bass.Trying now to take base rudiments and orchestrate different applications around the kit. Really trying to nail out the rudiment on snare/bass first then moving it around.
@@Avariche I know that one. But we just keep plugging away and it does get better. I just came through a whole thing in the last month with my double bass playing that had gone away. As it turns out practicing every day helps! 🤣
@@drumhighway It does! Seems double bass fades way faster than other skills for some reason. Not sure why that is but really noticed when I took the course to try and get it back and realized the goal is to suck less today than yesterday. lol
all fingers wrap around the stick or can the index remain free? Thank you
@@joecaruso1960 either way really. This video kind of talked about keeping the index finger on the stick but feel free to open it and use more of the middle finger. There are many approaches. The main thing is being relaxed and allowing the stick to move.
@@joecaruso1960 and yes, I prefer to keep all the fingers in contact with the stick.
@@drumhighway well, many great drummers leave the index finger free, gadd, weckl smith.......is there a reason?
Great Video!
Thank you! Shuffle on!
Killer
Wow wow wow amazing
Lovely grooves with of course a lovely set of drums and cymbals! Great video, thank you very much!
@@elfurrohetero3518 Thank you! And yes, I love my Gretsch!
@@drumhighway Gretsch! My Dream Drum set is a Gretsch!
Thank you! Another great example of high quality videos does not equal high number of views on YT! Very succintly explained with practical examples. Unlike so many other videos where the guys talk forever but nothing to show for.
@@svisves I really appreciate that. It has been a challenge to get this info out to people in hopes that it might be helpful. Cheers!
You could show this to any drummer and they would probably fall into the same trance I'm in.
@@Oreomilkhead I hope that’s a good thing! 🤣
last three rhythms were kinds of swung tresillos 1) standard but swung 2) same as first if u start on the 3rd beat of the bar 3) same but displaced an 8th later - the AND of beat 1. random but funny enough the first 2 ones are used in footwork (chicago style of dance music) its good to do these in all 8 positions of the bar - starting in different 8ths cinquillos are the next step, though its more a coordination exercise not for the gig itself lol ⪧⸜❪⸄⏑⸅❫⸝⪦
Great explanation and you’re very charming and funny.
@@jackbrinskelle9640 thanks so much! Feel free to like and subscribe so you’ll know about new stuff. Cheers!
Cool man. Nice pocket
@@gregHames-u6n thank you! 🙏

man this is some good stuff. this is what music needs right now. not boring brake downs and screaming. we need some good rhythmic drumming.
Thank you. Not very clean for sure but it’s about the idea.
Excellent intro to big band drumming!
@@nickmues437 thank you! Hope it might help some folks.
Why??
Good teacher! Thank you!
@@peter-ek3uh thank you so much! 🙏

Didn't ginger baker play the 1 and 3 or just the 3 on "sunshine of your love"? I'm trying to remember in my feeble brain if that was the case.
@@luigisavoia2401 bingo! He sure did. I think your memory is just fine!
I often lay off the cymbals when it's called for. That's just intuitive.
What is the Zildjian on your right side? Sounds great!
@@BeatKasterG hi-bell Constantinople. It is dry, but with enough wash to still offer a little spread.
sounds great! nice explanations too! earned a sub
Thanks and hope you got something out of it! I really enjoy this kind of playing, obviously:) Drum on!
From here on in this way of playing shall be known as “The Dink Donk Method”.
Fair enough! 😂
HI! I signed up, drummer friend! do you want to do it too? thank you very much

아메리칸 그립에 대한 설명은 잘 찾아볼 수가 없는데 드럼 초보인데 감사합니다.
도움이 되었다니 기뻐요! 시청 해주셔서 감사합니다!
Sounds like 4 sets of 4 16th notes - four beats.
@@PolyThumper it’s just a double stroke roll accenting the left hand on the upbeat.
Um… but it is not reversed, you would start with hihat, Snare and hihat on 1 and, hihat on 2, hihat and Bass on 2 and… and so on. You reversed just the wuarter-Gruppe, not the groove itself
Sounds like a good idea as well. Why don’t you make a video of yourself doing that and post it so we can check it out! Thanks!
great 🔥
That’s an interesting thought!🤔
@@GolddenWaffles something to consider! And these are ideas I use often!
Stewart Copeland counted backwards a lot. Cheers from Australia.
@@Warpedsmac he was fantastic at incorporating reggae feel in pop music. No one better. Cheers!
@@drumhighway Fo r sure. There's a video on yt that shows him playing and counting along and actually REMOVES the "1" from the count in Spirits in a Material World tune.
Looks like fun! Definitely intriguing to switch the right-hand part (as in rudiment exercises) to the right foot. Looking forward to working on this. And getting more accustomed to L hand on snare on the downbeat, etc.
I think you’ll get a lot out of it!
