      It's a gated community technically if you can find your way to the beach. Then I don't think they can kick you out at that point. But you'd have to paddleboard, swim, or crawl over some rocks to do so. .

    First off, this is a dangerous setup. Second, your conduit should have been extended all the way down into the cinder block. As one commented already, fence top rail 17 gauge, not 18 gauge is a cheap and safer way to have a short mast. You would need to secure top railings where they join with a bolt.

    I have a setup similar oy urs (a solarcon A-99), and a backhouse alo like yours... I have a 10' opole I want to fasten the antenna too, but, was considering fastening the base of metal pole to the shack, of it 5' from the ground up the wall of my shed (would probably make the top of the pole bout 15', and I'll attck the antenna about 1' from the top of that. I live in the mounains, but, in a madow clearing area for about 1/2 mile radius - curious what your surroundings are? ...you mention that the reception, even at the height in thi video, is good?

    • @elliothuh669
      @elliothuh669 8 місяців тому

      Yeah reception is good, or at least it seems very good.. However, it is skip. So height is not as imperative. Like is the case with VHF and UHF. Now if you go higher it obviously isn't going to hurt. But I have my Solarcon A-99 relatively very low. Only ten feet off the ground. BUT it still works. I make lots of contacts all over. Since, the antenna it self is pretty tall. 17 feet I think it kind of off sets that. My personal opinion, not scientific. By the way I am in the middle of a suburban neighborhood.

    • @greggould4275

      @@elliothuh669 thanks for that! Yeah I may follow your advice with that - I AM in the mountains but in a clearing, and so mine may work similar. Not to mention, in time I will add HAM, and if I set things up about 6' off the roof of the back house (which will be where the 17' antenna 'starts'), it will be easy to get onto he roof t adjust the tuning rings for HAM when he time comes that I add HAM. I am pretty new to all of this, though - you mentioned 'it is skip' - I remembr heaaring what skip is (not unline shortwave transmission into the upper atosphere), but, trying to remember - skip is a certain mode you'd put the CB in in order to broadcast that way, right?

      For what it's worth I have never had any "tipping issues" at all. With my masts. I live in So Cal @ sea level so no hurricanes ,or anything like that. I put guy wires. Basically only to prevent the mast from shaking violently in high winds. Rather than preventing it from tipping over.

    Not sure if it was asked but what did you use for lightning protection if at all and is that a serious concern? I have acces to that material you used as an electrician for free as scrap from my job and i never thought about using it. Seems like a good cheap alternative to me.

    • @elliothuh669
      @elliothuh669 Рік тому

      As far as saving your equipment from a lightning strike I don't think any amount of grounding would prevent that. From what I have heard and that does make sense to me considering the voltage of a lightning strike. Best bet would be to unplug the coax get it away from the radios. Some people stick them out their window.

      It all depends mainly on how tightly you pack the hotdog buns in. It's best to use hot dog buns, or a similar wadding. And use a wooden dowel to compress the hot dog bun . The tighter the pack the louder it is. It can be very loud. The answer is yes probably . Make sure to use a wooden dowel and not metal. Since, metal like steel may spark.
