Big Boy No. 4014 - College Station Run - October 4, 2024
Переглядів 39112 годин тому
Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were "hinged," or articulated, to allow them to negotiate curves. They had a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, which meant they had four wheels on the leading set of...

    I’m class of 1978 so I was there in the fall of 1974 when the women started. Had their own outfit-W-1. The rest of the corps complained about them right up until they started dating them. But there were no women in the band then. I love A&M more than I love America!!!

      After women were admitted to the Band, I wondered if a Corps underclassman guy who had a date with a Band woman would find himself having to whip out to the entire rest of the Band and then remember their names. That would have been somewhat exhausting.

    When I think of a university marching band, I don’t expect to see what looks like a marching band from a real military unit. It’s rather unsettling. And I say this as someone who enjoys real military unit marching bands.

      Texas A&M was established as a land-grant university in 1876 with a requirement that all students participate in military training. These military traditions strongly influenced many aspects of campus life, including the dress code for football games.

    The game was scheduled to start at 1100 hours Saturday Consider: Midnight Yell Practice Friday night, they likely didn't get back to their dorms before 0200 hours -- and then had to get up at, probably, 0600 hours, to prepare and rehearse again (as we see here... which is why they are in full uniform). Ags victorious, they then had to engage in the post-game victory celebration, involving more marching/playing. By the time all of this got finished, they all must have been totally exhausted.

    Mid 1990s, Corps Trip parade in San Antonio, there was a woman all decked out in maroon following on the street behind the Band -- obviously an Aggie Band Mom. Between tunes, during the drum cadence, she shouted around to everybody, "Aren't they stupendous?! Aren't they just FABULOUS!!!" again and again. She received almost as much sidewalk applause as the Band did -- because she was absolutely correct.

    It's great to hear Corps Staff shout about how much they love Duncan chow. My days there, we always had to self-hypnotize in the same fashion, to convince ourselves how great the Duncan chow was. Salt, fat, grease, cholesterol -- yeah boy, we loved us some Duncan chow!

    The drills are getting more complex as the autumn unfolds -- the marching no longer consists of (mainly the fish) "following the guy ahead of you." The Band's sound quality merits mention. For a long time awhile back, the Band was sort of thrown together each new Fall with kids who'd been in their high school marching bands. With diminishing Corps enrollment across the late 1960s and 1970s, the Band welcomed anyone who wanted to join. A boss of mine Band '63 (all Corps in those days) advised that when he went through registration, there was a question on a card asking if you played a musical instrument -- and if you did, you were automatically assigned to the Band. Boss said that this proved to be really shocking to guys who had come from other states who wanted to be engineers or veterinarians or such, and knew nothing at all about the Corps. Suddenly they found themselves in the Band, with everything (Oh my goodness!) that entails. Now, auditioning is required before admission to the Band. And the musicians are stupendous, the quality of their sound is exemplary -- just back the video up, and listen to it again. We're talking studio excellence, even outside in the open air. (If privilege standards are being maintained, the only folks you see wearing sunglasses are either Juniors or Seniors.)

    Very insightful. We have experienced this reality several times. A person can "handle' all kinds of things as long as they "have to". But when we get to the time that we can see the "end" of that situation on the horizon, all of the emotions of handling those realities become very raw and very real.

    They are parading by the Tarrant County courthouse. My first exposure to the Band/Corps was during their TCU Fort Worth Corps trips early when I was in grade school. They marched south from the courthouse down Main Street, which was all brick in those days, and you really could hear the taps on their heels. (A blind couple, for years in those days, camped on the sidewalk by Leonard's Department Store, peddling pencils and singing. Even as the Aggie Band thundered past on the street, they kept singing.) Childhood imprint: I was astonished, more than a decade later, to understand that "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" did NOT originate with the Aggie War Hymn. P.S. I was in my late 20s before I realized that people were ending prayers with "Amen" -- and not "A&M."

    • @CrabSmokingACigarette
      @CrabSmokingACigarette 10 днів тому

      Yup, Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight was a popular minstrel song back in the day they decided to tack on. Fun fact: The Kansas Jayhawks band plays it when their team scores as well, albeit a much slower rendition.

    It's always GREAT to hear "The Yellow Rose of Texas"! P.S. Earlier here, we heard much of "The Strategic Air Command March." That piece is almost always employed later in the season, during the Band's "most anticipated" performance, the four-way cross-through. The cross-through requires so much concentration on the drill (marching), that the music they play needs to be completely routine, automatic and instinctive. We will see, later -- probably at the t.u. game -- if this observation is true.
