Attempting to Learn the Theremin in Less than a Week- Open Theremin v4.5
It was probably inevitable that I'd eventually get around to trying the Theremin, and there isn't a better month than October to share this special kind of terror. If you've ever been curious about the reality of learning this instrument, I show you the assembly of an Open Theremin kit, and several spooky nights of me going through the stages of new instrument grief.

Wasting Time: Creating a Kontakt Sample Library of Clocks
Переглядів 4094 місяці тому
For funsies I decided to try making my own personal sample library from a collection of alarm clocks, for no other reason than I had the clocks... and it's about time they started to contribute something to the household. My cat sure isn't going to do it. But I also spend a good amount of time lecturing everyone about a tangentially related topic while also belaboring the heck out of a very obv...

I sometimes think that a lot of you didn't quite get that the Humble Grumble wasn't supposed to be anything more than a silly joke, but 2 years later people are still asking about this nonsense I made. So... you win! Well... depending on your definition of "win" I suppose. But there are now keys, and a better operating crank handle, so progress has been made. Tiny, little, small, baby steps of ...
Writing Music that Doesn't Matter - How I Work + Letting Go

Sound Scare: Dark Ambient "Sound Bath" Inspired Music for Halloween

For Halloween this year, I decided to try my hand at a full music improv performance/experiment. It was partially inspired by all the peaceful sound bath videos I've seen; but instead I thought, "Let's make it scary and weird!" I think everyone else might just call it Dark Ambient music, but... just let me think I invented something new, OK? I need this. Things I learned: - Wearing something li...

How Small Can a Soundbox Go? - Testing Tiny Hollow Bodies

Great video. I'm thinking I made a mistake by getting a Stylophone which arrived a couple weeks ago and is ALREADY broken! I remembered this open theremin since I was already disappointed with the stylophone before it's failure. Not sure what to do with the stylophone but I think it's only strong points are moot since I have pedals and other synths to run that cv out to. It's strong points are the delay, modulation and other effects. How is the arduino ending this one? I've read you can edit the settings to suit your needs?

impressive work .. As you are not an electronics technician you are daring but the reward was worthy of the audacity !! Bravo ! :) I have the same problem with certain snap buttons on my k2000 purchased over thirty years ago and which works flawlessly for the rest. And I fear that it would be too risky for me to try to remove this motherboard to clean them even if I assembled PCs in the past... I'm less courageous than you, it's my only master keyboard and I don't want to risk it breaking down for just one day.

Made from high quality tone plastic! For real though that's better than I thought it'd sound, considering you haven't played in ages and it's made out of plastic it actually sounds great. The action (in the off chance that you're not familiar, it's the distance between the strings and the fingerboard) looks way too high though, that's probably making it harder to play, it's almost like the fingerboard needs to be higher up so it butts up closer to the strings better because I don't know if cutting the bridge further down would fix the issue without making the string tension too low. Either way though that thing's cool as hell.

I initially started with the Open Theremin a few months ago. The instrument worked well, but I was discouraged with it needing re-tuning every few minutes (ground, setup etc. were ok). It seems this is a design flaw with this specific model of theremin. Afterwards, I switched to a second-hand Etherwave from Moog, and the tuning is solid. I give it 10 minutes to warm up, and after that the tuning does not drift. Also, between sessions it requires either no or only slight adjustment.

Well done, lovely to see an intelligent approach to learning the theremin and the lovely soundscape at the end shows that as long as you have 'compositional' taste you can certainly get to a point of Sound FX / controller stuff! - I was playing tunes you could listen to within about 3-4 months and now 2.5 years in am getting some decent musicality, dynamics and intonation (as you can possibly see on the 100s of progress vids on my channel) ... in answer to your 'pitch field' issue. Good theremins, like the Moog Claravox, Etherwaves and the entry Theremini do have solid pitch fields after the 20 minute warm-up or so and I make sure the room I am in has no wild temp fluctuations and the electrical side is solid and voila, I can play for hours with zero pitch field change, which is what you need to get thos fine hand positions locked down! Especially pieces with intervals eg ua-cam.com/video/z9hE6WP4U5Q/v-deo.html Good luck if you continue the 'diatonic' journey!!

IIRC some Hurdy Gurdys don´t just have a fixed peg on their keys, but instead kind of a finger you can swivel on that peg which allows for fine adjustment of where it actually touches the string- It lets you tune every single key, so to speak. So the initial placement of each key doesn´t need to be that precise with that method.

I expected the clocks alarm sounds and spring winding to be included also - maybe it would have been too cliche, but would certainly not be identical amongst the clocks. ...Not too mention, 1am serenade of alarms would supply you with additional library of neighbourly expressions of disapproval of your experiments😜 PS.: A large carton box stuffed with a blanket makes an excellent recording dead box.

But... it has occurred to me I should just record random city sounds and make something fun from that.

At the end of your video I realized the reverb effect didn't quite compensate lack of the resonance box. I'm trying to figure out how this problem can be solved using sound effects? Or just print out the entire instrument, and make it sound more traditional? Anyway, that was interesting.

    • @ComposerKristin
      @ComposerKristin 7 місяців тому

I think most people who are looking for a more acoustic sound just mic up an acoustic. I've never heard an electric that doesn't sound at least a little... well, electric. I believe I was using one of the basic reverbs inside Guitar Rig Pro? (I really need to get better about taking notes along the way). So, it's possible that a different effect and/or pedal would do a better job. Also, weirdly enough, my "real" electric is a Zeta Jazz, and... this little 3d print sounds less "electric" to me than that one. I have no idea why, but... the pickup also matters here. Both of these things are something I'd like to experiment with more towards the end of the year, though. Fun experiments! And thanks for tuning in! 🎻

@@ComposerKristin No problem Kristin, I used to compose music since C64 and then Amiga500. Hundred years ago and I totally understand your passion. Thinking about it I recollected if you find the right sample, you can make your violin sound like entire orchestra. Or like you said pedal or rather sound effect where you can mix effects together. It takes time to find the sound you'd want to get, but that's the beauty of experimenting, and fun on its own. If comes to getting rid of electric sound. I wouldn't. In my comment I was referring to the sound of traditional violin which is more 3 dimensional and powerful. And I was thinking how to get the same result on electric one. And then realized, it can sound even more powerful w/ proper samples and effects. Good luck with your experiments.

I experimented with lock washers and didn't think they were particularly effective in this context. I did use Loctite for the end of the crank in version 1, but overall I don't like using the stuff on an active build that needs to be changed/adjusted/etc. My little tubing clamp worked the best out of everything that I tried, but I'm sure there are plenty of other effective solutions. I'll have the stls up shortly, so you're welcome to give building this a try and report back what worked best for you. I don't always show everything I try on camera, because then people will complain that the video is too long and boring. <shrug> Everyone's got an opinion on the internet....

After posting I starting thinking that the Performer v5 disk was kind of a high version number, so I did a little digging. Apparently Digital Performer and Performer did technically exist at the same time by this point, but I don't think the first version or two of Digital Performer were particularly accessible to most people. It wasn't until the late 90s/early 2000s that actually recording to your hard disk like we do today was feasible for the average composer/musician. If anyone remembers/has experience with those early Digital Performer versions during this time... comment!

The lovely wonky sound is the benefit of it being too short. It's impossible to control the peg position on a short string as the pressure also increases the string tension too much. (Chicken & Egg problem) I kind of get that the wonky sound was probably part of the highly desirable feature set, but if you make it longer, you will be able to actually control the pitch to some extent. And of course, the wheel edge shouldn't be 3D printed you can glue a wooden veneer on it, sand it smooth and use rosin.
