How forte should the top line be? I have one teacher telling me that I'm playing the whole thing too loudly. I think that's because I'm playing the top line too loudly because I meant to bring out the top line. And so because I'm playing the top line loudly I'm therefore playing the rest of it a bit more louder than piano... And so the whole thing sounds too loud. Or so a teacher tells me.. But I'm playing it like that because I have another teacher who's saying the top line should be loud so that it carries and can be heard and not get lost and become homogenous when I perform it in the exam (which is tomorrow lol). I'm very confused....

Question. Bars 17-20: the melody in the right hand is the first of each pair of quavers i.e. E#, F# etc but the melody gets “lost” by the subsequent note of each pair of quavers. I try to make those first notes louder than the second but it still doesn’t sound right. When I practice I sometimes don’t play the second notes and it does sound and flow a lot better. When I listen to recordings on youtube of the piece I can’t hear those second notes! Any tips? :) Thank you SO much!

Beautifully played ....gives me inspiration to complete grade8❤

My piano teacher from my childhood days would be turning in her grave. She really didn't like it when I discovered ragtime, and tried to persuade me away from it. She did let me play Debussy's now non-PC titled cakewalk though. I failed grade 8 under her . I passed it later with another teacher, whivh if I recall was the year said cakewalk came up on the syllabus (though I might have the two switched in my memory). Maple Leaf is still one of my go-to pieces, along with a lot of other ragtime.
