Putting the art in artist: Finding and maintaining your artistic voice
Although electronic music still celebrates the idea of the maverick genius toiling away in their studio, focused on nothing but the music, that scenario has increasingly become the exception rather than the rule. Making great music is no longer enough; navigating social media, management, PR, labels, bookers and journalists is all an expected part of the job, and finding success often requires careerist thinking.
Amidst these professional responsibilities, however, where does the actual art come in? Is there still room for artists to experiment, develop their skills and even make the occasional wrong turn? Audiences and the industry expect originality, but what does that really mean and how can artists find it? Moreover, can it be maintained over the long haul without having to hop on all the latest bandwagons?
To address these questions, we've assembled a panel of veteran artists, all of who have not only established themselves as unique voices within the electronic music sphere, but have also remained relevant over long periods of time.

Make Room: Find and protecting space for marginalized communities
Переглядів 493 роки тому
Although it's well documented that dance music culture is rooted in the story of marginalized communities, there's no denying that those same communities have not shared in the benefits of the music's explosion over the past several decades. In 2019, even in the world's largest and most diverse metropolitan centers, the average party or festival is likely going to be overwhelmingly white, strai...
Looking to the future: Building a scene vs. growing an industry
Переглядів 1163 роки тому
Electronic music is no longer a fledgling enterprise - it's a global industry that literally generates billions in revenue each year, and even the genre's more niche corners, which once shunned overt commercialism, are awash in money. Amidst this boom, however, concerns have risen that many of electronic music's foundational values (e.g. community, respect, music) are being shoved aside, partic...
Take the LEAP: An effort to reform drug laws around the globe
Переглядів 553 роки тому
For better or worse, there's no getting around the fact that electronic music and nightlife are connected to drug culture. And while drugs are something that dip into nearly all aspects of modern life, the perception of electronic music as a drug-addled enterprise has made our community an easy target for politicians and law enforcement. That's unlikely to change without a radical shift in poli...
Enjoy Right Now: The importance of no-camera policies
Переглядів 7 тис.3 роки тому
In 2014, veteran DJ, producer and promoter DVS1 published an article via the online platform XLR8R addressing the growing issue of cell phone overuse in club culture and presented a campaign titled "Enjoy Right Now." It's 2019, and we're all still addicted to our phones. They're everywhere: on the street, on the train, in cafes and yes, at the club. We've all seen people taking selfies on the d...
Write it Down: Developing and promoting scene ethics and guidelines

Community. Respect. Diversity. Safety. We've all heard these words being held up as some of the main pillars of dance music culture, but what do they actually mean in the real world? When it comes to putting on an event or even just attending one, how can these values be translated into both creating and participating in an environment that's not only enjoyable, but also safe, welcoming and res...

A year or so I started leaving my phone in the car when I go out. I was inspired by my friend who always did the same. He said the only thing you might want to know is the time. Now I have way more freedom to dance without my phone flopping around. Also on a deeper level when I got tired of dancing and would sit down usually by myself I really came to just appreciate/ sit with the music instead of just going on my phone impulsively. Also, coming from someone with some social anxiety I found its a lot easier to meet people. If you just sit down without being on your phone people will come talk to you.

The issue runs even deeper. When you wanna get a foot in the door as a DJ, promoters, collectives, labels, clubs wanna see your social media portfolio, wanna see videos of you performing in front of big crowds, wanna see reach. If you can't show that they dont give two shits about your quality, skills or capabilities

the problem is everywhere, Kids sporting events, classrooms, driving...etc.etc. Taking videos and pictures is a horrible problem in general now. I can't tell you how many times I've had to sit patiently for 2 to 3 minutes while someone is thumbing through a million pictures and videos to show me one amazing thing. Once I see it, it's something normal that didn't need to be documented AT ALL.

I find myself quite opinionated on this topic because my phone is a medical device. Dexcom G6 if you're curious. It sure would be nice not having to leave the dance floor and go to a special area so I can look at my phone for 6 seconds to see if my blood sugar is stable or not. I could care less if you wanna sticker my camera's, but the security sleeve or flat out denial of phones is a huge headache for me, and anyone with diabetes who's on a CGM. Or anyone with a smartphone paired medical device for that matter, the dexcom isn't the only one.
