The Nikon D2x wasn’t really a revolutionary camera. It’s image quality was soon superseded by the humble Nikon D200. The Nikon D3 was the revolutionary one.

I have had this mark.1 lens for many years so I probably know its foibles. A couple of years ago I got a mark.2 for its Power-OIS which goes Dual on the G9. To fit the Power-OIS I think they had to change the focus motors, the mark 2 can focus more quickly (but this may be the extra stability), but remember it is the camera that does the focusing, then how fast the lens motors can move; if you ask it to move a long way, it takes longer. The glassware is identical. The glass is uncoated, this is to /reduce/ chroma, if there is any it becomes white, along with three ED elements. No zoom lens is best at its long end but I do not find it needs backing off very far, ~180mm will do the trick. No lens is at its best aperture wide open, it likes being shut down f/8-f/11 The 45-200 does seem to be a bit unloved and forgotten, this is reflected in the used price of both models. OIS cannot be ascribed to yay-many stops as IBIS can because it doesn't work like that, it won't help you use a slow shutter but does stabilise the image you are trying to shoot, very effectively. Power -OIS can be worth 4-5 stops at that lark. And that can aid focusing, it is difficult for a camera to AF if the image is dancing about.

Thank you for the video. Got mine in late 2021 from B&H used department at 1k dollars with a shutter count of 42k. Never had to look back since then. A gem of a camera. I use it for wildlife photography mostly. However, it can nicely handle other genre like landscape, street and indoor photography at ease. For wildlife shots, I pair it with EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II + EF 2x III producing an effective focal length of 780mm. Can also handhold this combo for a while but mostly use it tripod or monopod mounted. Cannot even think of mirrorless cameras due to their EVF lag and poor battery life. A similar mirrorless combo isn't going to be any lighter therefore, weight saving issue is irrelevant here. And I love the form factor. Always feel like having a camera in hand whenever I hold a DSLR, rest are toys. Being purely a hobbyist, don't see anything that mirrorless cameras can do and mine doesn't. Don't care about video option, that's not my cup of tea. However, when I feel like recording a few casual clips, use my smartphone. Thanks again.

Totally agree and I still use mine alongside my 1DX MkII. Whilst there is obviously a major upgrade on the sensor of the 1DX MkII so that for the most challenging lighting conditions, that is what I'll use but otherwise the 1D MkIV is still a very good performer. I picked my copy up for £350 with 40K shutter actuations and in pretty mint condition so brilliant value for money and as I live on the coast and do landscapes and wildlife, the weather sealing is really important, it is the UK afterall :)

I switched from my D750 to a Z5 the first thing I noticed I missed all the physical buttons & controls from the DSLR. For example just to activate the self timer one has to go through the menu to switch it on, same with the metering modes & other little nigglies. 6 months later I purchased a D700 & fell in love with the handling & image quality. I sold the Z5 & on a strong recommendation purchased a D810. I guess the only Zed cameras that resemble the DSLRs are the Z8 & Z9; ouch! Too much overkill I'm afraid...

I have just bought a used Z6 & it’s pretty impressive. One aspect not much discussed is just how good the old screw drive AF-D lenses are on the converter. They don’t autofocus, but the electric AF contacts give the Z6 focus information so you get a really great manual focus assist system with a red box which turns green when you are in focus. All AF-D lenses I’ve tried work really well and the old AFD lenses are well made with a nice smooth focus action (except for the cheap plastic 50mm f1.8D version I tried yesterday: that was awful.)

I got one a few months ago for landscapes, best purchase ever! The image quality and dynamic range is incredible, I don't see any point in buying the latest mirrorless cameras, especially not for my use case. Some people say they are lighter but are they really? Once you factor in carrying many extra batteries the weight becomes becomes negligible and the lenses are of a similar size/weight. You can use the d810 with gloves on too which is a bonus in winter.

Depends on the price & shutter count. I have mine (1st 7 only DSLR) for 7.5 yrs now. I would have to guess my shutter count is up to about 80-90k from shooting wildlife (mostly wildlife/nature/macro photography) with probably a 35-40% keeper rate for wildlife. Plenty of res for everything but the heaviest of crops but still very decent. I'm looking to upgrade to the tilt rear lcd & the in camera focus stack shooting mode. I'll always take more AF options if available. If I get the D850, no need to upgrade any of my software either. As a bonus, the 600mm f4 vr lenses are coming down in price quite nicely also. If the camera does what you need, no need to upgrade.
