Flapper after the exhaust riser in the outdrive can be a problem sometimes. Flapper keeps water from entering system, but when running, the exhaust pushes it open to release exhaust.

  • @nsxmt520

Update!!!! !upon reinvestigating this issue during quarantine, i started from scratch again. I found a small access cover on the back side of the the drive (4 bolts), removed cover, which would allow you to remove a clog should you get one. verified there was no clog, then ran a boroscope downwards, to where water enters the drive. everything was free and clear. with the muffs on, and moderate flow from the hose, no water made it to the access cover, so i figured, my muffs are suspect. different set of muffs, same result. put cover back on, install new water pump impeller and reassemble everything. Retry with full flow to hose. No good, impeller housing gets extremely hot within about 15 seconds. upon looking everything over again, i opted to switch the inlet and outlet hoses, as i had the outlet hose was disconnected during the test and i had filled with water in an effort to help prime the system. when the engine was started, the water in the hose quickly disappeared , which was suspicious. so i swapped the two hoses on the water pump, which actually looks backward when installed, ie the lower hose goes to the top of the engine, and the top hose goes underneath the engine. Voila, everything works the way it should. Boy did i feel stupid. i assumed that when i had winterized it two years prior, i had disconnected all the hoses as they were froze (early cold spell) and the following year, i had assembled everything backwards! Hope this helps.

I have the same issue the out drive seems to be clogged up. I can run the engine by feeding water to the impeller hose and engine runs fine. I tried forcing water down the hose leading direct into the drive and it squirts out like its blocked and not a drop comes out the bottom of the drive. I have had over 12 Mercruisers of all years. This is my first Volvo and I've never had this happen. I am thinking a kinked hose in there. I just bought the boat and previous owner is no longer arround to answer questions. Going to remove the out drive and start there.
