Allan Menk - Master of None
United States
Приєднався 10 жов 2014
As the saying goes, a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one. I jump on every opportunity to make each day the best it can be, so my life gets pretty busy sometimes. Watch some of my videos to learn about my random 'trades,' and try to decipher what it really means to be a 'master of none.'
Test driving and troubleshooting the '87 Ranger
Since we have the engine back together for the second time, it is now time to fiddle around with distributor issues and take it for some test drives! The old Ranger even got some off-road testing over at Josh's farm

In the last two Ranger videos, we bought the truck and started tearing into the engine. In part 3, we worked ALL DAY to remove the heads from the engine since the exhaust manifold bolts were so rusty and liked to strip/snap off. Next, we will be starting to reassemble the old Ranger engine and see if our coolant-oil problem is fixed! Music: Amazing Plan - Kevin MacLeod Filmed on Sony A5100 Edit...

In the previous video, we bought a Ranger and started tearing into the engine. In this video, we continue taking the engine apart. We got the valve covers and lower intake off, and next up is the difficult task of removing the heads and replacing the head gaskets. Don't worry, there's a LOT more work to do. I want
I've seen you before, You were in my CSE 1001 class.
@minidonut827 Haha, let's go! Funny that you stumbled across this video. Even funnier that you recognize me from a 1-credit class 2 years ago!
My son is transferring from UMD to U of M this fall. He requested Middlebrook for proximity to his major building. Is there a bus that goes from Middlebrook to the main campus?
Yes; thanks for asking! There are busses that connect the different parts of campus, although I always found that it took about the same time to walk across the bridge and get some exercise. The GopherTrip app shows you the campus bus lines and real-time bus locations. Your son must be majoring in some kind of music or business? Those are the two biggest programs on West Bank.
That guy Alex is really cool
He sure is something
Awesome video! I have another question for ya if you don't mind. How hard is it to get into the ME program and are there a good ammount of scholorships to get?
I don't mind at all! I assume you're still talking about UMN because that's where I go. Well, I just googled "UMN CSE acceptance rate," and it looks like there is about a 10-15% acceptance rate. After you are accepted into CSE, you just say you want to do ME and there's no problem. As far as scholarships go, it's more likely that you'll get some sort of baseline scholarship like the the Iron Range Scholarship (that's what I got, and it looks like that particular one goes mainly to MN residents). Other than that, the University gives scholarships to ME students who apply for it, but I'm not sure how competitive those are. That's basically as far as university scholarships go, and the rest you are basically on your own to apply for the FAFSA or other random scholarships.
@allanmenk-masterofnone What was your high school GPA and standardized testing scores?
@__StarLInk__ GPA was 4.0, but my school was weird in the regard that you could get A+'s to go above a 4.0. Then, I took the ACT once, got 30, and was content with the score. Probably could've raised it with another attempt, but 30 is a pretty good score as it is.
@allanmenk-masterofnone Okay, because I have a 3.3 unweighted. However, I am about to make a 4.0 unweighted my junior year (taking the toughest classes I can). This will give me a 5.0 weighted for the year. I hope they will look at my grade improvement and see my dedication (me being a legacy also helps, even though I currently live in Florida). For my test, I am waiting until the 22nd to see if I get a good SAT score. I also hope taking Calculs 1 and Physics 1 next year will show my improvements.
Update on my SAT score I got a 1290. I am happy because my last one was a 1210, so there was a big improvement.
HI ALEX!!!!
Wow, he really been leaving you hanging so far... Gotta tell him to reply to your comment!
Uno
Ohhhh switching up the languages!
@@allanmenk-masterofnone Gotta add some variety to my otherwise banal reply
Head gaskets in the small ford 6 were always an issue I stripped a bunch down for recycling and most had head gasket issues easy to work on tho so there's that
Yeah, that's what Alex was telling me. Apparently, cracked heads are also a common issue, but we were too optimistic and assumed it was just head gaskets. Won't make that mistake again!
Free where?

Can always count on you! Hoping spring break is going well for you!

coolant in the oil isnt good 😬
Yeahhhhhhh but we bought the old truck anyway... Hey, hopefully it was just the head gasket, right? Just have to trust the process...
randomly found these videos. i am not disappointed
I'm starting to think I might need to make this channel a full-blown car channel! I really enjoyed making these videos and working on this truck, so I love to hear you appreciate it, too!
Just wait till the algorithm picks this up!
I think your comment helped with that. Thank you so much; it's cool to see that people actually enjoy watching my videos!

love the vids man y'all gonna blowup just watch
Oops, I meant to post this video tomorrow! Thank you again for the comment; I'm sure it helps with the YT recommendations.
My girlfriends dad was a big minitrucker back in the 90's, had a ranger with the 2.9 V6 as a side project. He spent a whole week replacing the oil pump chasing an oil pressure issue just to find out the pump wasn't the cause. The cam bearing journals in his block weren't machined right and they were spun, making him lose oil pressure. Not sure if that was the case on all blocks, but just something to keep and eye for.
Thanks for the note! I'll have to keep that in mind. For now, we have oil pressure, and the gage seems to be working right. As of yet, it runs really well until it warms up and starts running rough. You wouldn't happen to know what that would be, do you? I've asked some other friends, but it's difficult to pinpoint electrical/computer issues! Seems like the mixture gets leaned out too much
Howdy from Canada! I love the ranger! My mom had a little 2.3 2wd ranger back in the day, crashed it near the bay of Fundy national park back in 99-00, she still tells us she misses it from time to time.
Canada isn't too far off! You know, they actually call Minnesota the mini Canada of the states! Yeah, a lot of people seem to like the Ranger. I just wish ours was a manual - it would be even more fun to drive!
G'day from Australia! Popped up in my feed so here I am. Keep up the good work
Australia?!? No way! The internet works in mysterious ways. Do you have a pet kangaroo? Just kidding. Thanks for the comment; will do!
Currently building a single cab 89 ranger with a 351 Windsor bored to a 393 stroker. Love the old square body rangers
Danggggg!!! Love to hear it! So you actually know what you're doing when it comes to this. I have to admit: the square body does make the truck 10x cooler.

Why, thank you! It may take a few more years, but it'll happen. I just need to master the arts of editing and storytelling, and I get better with each successive video.
For sure man this was genuinely entertaining
its good, maybe with good thumbnail will get more viewer
You are absolutely right! I might have to change it. I think this was one of those videos where I just needed to get it posted and ended up cutting some corners after it was rendered and uploaded. Thanks for the advice!

Couldn't agree more. Learned a lot by fixing this old truck!
Hey, I have a question. I am an HS junior, and I have a 1210 SAT and a 3.5 gpa. What do you think my chances are of getting in for engineering? And if you know anything about financial aid, you think I'm good enough?
That's a good question! It's a difficult one for me to answer because I don't have a great reference point for your situation. For the school like UMNTC, it is pretty competitive. That's not to say you won't get in, but just that it isn't a guarantee. I would definitely have a backup in mind, and I would even recommend getting the general classes out of the way at a much cheaper community college (they're often easier, too). Based on my standing and what I got from the U for financial aid, I'm not sure you would get much from the university with your current test score. I know it's not a definite answer by any standards, but feel free to ask another question if you want me to do some more digging and clarify further.
@allanmenk-masterofnone I am going to take another Sat in June. I am taking all aice classes or ap equivalent. I am also a legacy. I come from a small town in florida, and my family income is less than 60k. I know in-state tuition is a lot, and that's just why I asked about the financial aid. As for the classes, I will be taking calc and physics next year.
Well, that's definitely going to be a bump up when considering your chances for engineering! My best advice is to stay busy with productive activities during your senior year so colleges see that you are motivated and active. Of course, raising your SAT score would help significantly as well. I know they always have stats posted about average GPA/test scores of incoming admitted students, so you'll be best off getting closer to those numbers. Good idea to take calc and physics - those concepts will be HEAVILY used in virtually any engineering class you take. Physics 2 here at the U has been the toughest class for me; it went WAY beyond what I learned in AP Physics 2 in high school. Then again, Physics 2 is electricity and magnetism which isn't as intuitive for my mechanical engineering mind. P.S. Sorry it took me a while to respond; I've been swamped with homework and college stuff.
@allanmenk-masterofnone All good. I am just happy I found someone to talk to. I meet a guy on roblox blood and iron who also does ME at the U. He is also swamped, so I don't get to talk to him a lot. I am thankful that you replied, good luck with classes.

This video brought me great joy!
Tis the season! It's good to know you're still keeping up with the videos. Tell the Maki's I said hi, and Merry Christmas!
Eyy, one of my favorite travel dudes! That looks like an interesting and long hike! Very beautiful though!
It was! I just enjoy how it seems like we were losing our minds on the never-ending hike.
@@allanmenk-masterofnone that made it funny! And the way you stared at the camera multiple times waiting for her to fall 😂 This is the kind of travel videos I love to see. I don't want to see the eifel tower, I want to see the cool mountains in Norway and the awesome rocky hike at the end and the walk through the town. Nice job Allan!
Tell me more about this trip. Was it a family trip? How long were you there? Thanks for the series, I genuinely enjoyed it!
This was a family trip in June/July. It lasted about 3 weeks, and we went all over. My sister, Melanie, made an itinerary for the trip that was 42 pages long!!! The series isn't even over yet, actually! Next, we headed to England for a 9-day cruise to Norway. I think the next episode (out tomorrow) is my favorite one of the series with the 20-mile hike in Bergan. There are like 7 parts total, I think. I recorded a lot!
@@allanmenk-masterofnone sweet!!! That will be an awesome video!! I've been wanting videos like this for so long. The unorganized "chaotic" travel videos with random shots of anything and everything, rather than the professional ones that only take videos of the "cool" stuff and you're the one that I was looking for!! Hopefully you get to travel again soon and do it again! 😃
@andrewbeiler615 yeah, many of my other videos have a pretty clear purpose, but this whole Europe series was kind of hard to make cohesive with it being such a massive project. Sometimes, I don't record as much as I should, and all these things add up to make it a little bit harder. But I'm pretty content with the way it turned out!
Another comment for the algorithm boost. These videos are so cool!! I'm glad I found your channel. Loved the views of the hike. Makes me so excited for my first trip abroad next year!
You inspire me Allan. At the moment I don't have any videos on UA-cam so I'm not in the slightest a UA-camr. I would like to post some videos when I go to Europe next year but 1) I'm not at all a video making person and 2) I don't want to spend my time recording. But you inspire me because i see that it doesn't take much to make a video. Sure it's not as professional as Mr Beast's videos but who cares!!! It shows the general travel and geography nerds like me love it! Thanks for the video!
Well that just gave me inspiration to keep making videos about whatever is going on. I like to think the video quality goes up with each one I make. Hey, there's no time like the present! I would love for you to record some clips and start doing some basic editing to post to UA-cam! I use DaVinci resolve to edit my videos, and I'd be willing to give you some help if you are serious about wanting to make some videos. I'm going to subscribe to you right now.
@@allanmenk-masterofnone thank you, I appreciate it! I'll definitely keep you in mind when I record videos from my trip next year. Thanks so much!
This is pretty cool! Your videos showed up in my algorithm. I love the chill videos like this, not necessarily a whole big purpose to the video, just having the camera turned on during travel. I've never been outside of the USA or Canada but I've been dreaming of it since I was 10. In just a couple months I go to Europe for 6 weeks!!!!
Thank you so much for the comment! Yes, the videos were not the main purpose of the trip, but it is nice to have them online to share with family and friends and look back on the memories! Enjoy your trip! Where exactly are you going?
@@allanmenk-masterofnoneI'm going to all the German countries and possibly Slovakia.
Awesome race, dude! You were directly behind me at the start -and beat me by 4 min.😊 well done! It was a great time for sure.
No way! You look familiar, but I can't tell if it's because I saw you at the marathon or if you just look like another runner. Just watched your Grandma Marathon video and subscribed to you! How did you even stumble across my video? Comments like these are what keep me motivated to make these videos.

Thank you for these videos about the U of M
Oops, somehow I didn't see this comment until just now. No problem! I hope you somewhat enjoyed the video. Life's been pretty busy! I checked out your channel and it looks like you'll be at the U soon. Do you know where you're staying?
@@allanmenk-masterofnone Frontier Hall, I think. It was my first choice on the housing application that I submitted back in February, so I think I’ll get in. A science and engineering LLC sounds awesome, so that’s why I chose to stay there.
@@alanzehnder Oh, perfect! I will be a CA (community advisor) in Centennial next year. Science and Engineering LLC? You'd have plenty of people to study with! You thinking of majoring in some sort of engineering then?
@@allanmenk-masterofnone That’s really cool! I’m considering computer science, mechanical, or electrical engineering. My primary goal is to work in the field of robotics. It is a bit is a far out dream of mine, but I want to work with humanoids specifically, like Honda’s ASIMO. I am really looking forward to having friends to study with. I was all on my own while I homeschooled for the last five years; that sucked! It would be awesome and kind of surreal to see/meet you there in person. Can’t wait to be at University! :)
