Circular Economy Centre for Construction Minerals
Приєднався 25 тра 2021
The ICEC-MCM is funded by UKRI and EPSRC as part of the £30 million NICER Programme which supports new initiatives to increase sustainability, improve resource efficiency and reduce waste in sectors such as materials, textiles, chemicals and metals. The ICEC-MCM brings together 7 academic institutions (25 academics, 15 post-docs, 15 PhD students) and more than 40 industry partners across the UK Construction sector. The centre will explore how better design and manufacturing of products and structures made from mineral materials (such as aggregates, cement and brick) can help the UK’s construction industry to do more with less, reduce waste and lower costs and negative impacts. The objective is to reduce UK construction minerals extraction (presently more than half a million tonnes per day), and reduce the generation of 154 million tonnes of mineral waste each year, which would bring the UK at the forefront of the green industrial revolution, paving the way for other nations to follow.
Connecting finance with the real economy: Asset-level data for the construction minerals sectors
On 21st January 2025, ICEC-MCM hosted their last Lunchtime Webinar. Our guest speakers from the UK Centre for Greening Finance and Investment (CGFI), Christophe Christiaen and Amani Maalouf, delivered a presentation on “Connecting Finance with the real economy: Asset-level data for the construction minerals sectors.”
If financial institutions are to support a transition to a more sustainable economy, they need to understand the real world footprint, risks and impacts of their investments. Asset-level data that connects the location and characteristics of physical production assets with ownership is a key building block to do so. The team at CGFI presented their work on developing open asset databases for the cement, steel and other industries and how these are being used to support green finance applications and decision-making.
More about CGFI: The UK Centre for Greening Finance and Investment is a NERC funded, multi-university research programme to bridge the gap between environmental science and green finance practice. Within the Centre, researchers at the Spatial Finance Initiative create open asset databases for high impact industries and promote spatial analysis of a various sustainability risks, opportunities and impacts.
