Pulling the Mast with a home made Dolly.
In this short series we pull the mast and set it on a home made dolly system to transport it to our house. We look to change out a vhf wire and add a wind meter as well as new lights. Then give the mast a good polish, then walk it through town to have it lifted and put back on.

    We have a Boston whaler squall we have been using as a dinghy and are looking to replace it for a pudgy. Have you sailed it? With the squall, winds around 17 and it is not a good ride under sail. Maybe it would be fine on the icw but we are usually on the outside. I do sometimes use cleats I put in the back to hold the sail but just a half wrap so it doesn’t pull your arm off and you can still drop it. We have had it 2 years and never thought of needing to reef it. I’m just curious if you have played with it in some wind and chop? It looks like a great boat and the price is pretty good. Cool videos!! I subscribed 😂

      I have sailed it at Cape Lookout bight in 10-15 winds and it was comfortable, but not on the ocean. My only concern in higher winds would be trying to douse the sail quickly would not be easy, as you have to drop the mast and pull out the top mast section to do it. The biggest reason I reef it is so the boom doesn't hit the wife in the head!

    • @HippiePirates
      @HippiePirates Місяць тому

      @@SailingKnotShore 🤣Not hitting the wife sounds like a good enough reason. It looks like a great answer for our issue. The squall would be perfect but it is so light. The fiberglass is real thin and so we constantly have to patch and repair it. Thanks for the great info!

    Erik, Thanks for the thorough look at setting up for sailing! I'm considering buying a Pudgy. Can you tell me how you like sailing it? I would use it primarily for sailing, rather than as a tender or life boat.

    • @SailingKnotShore
      @SailingKnotShore 3 місяці тому

      I would not recommend it as a sailing dingy, there are probably others that have a better hull form for sailing performance. I did modify my pudgy to add a small self tacking jib like in this video: ua-cam.com/video/PE564oYl4Ds/v-deo.html but haven't fully tested it yet. We bought ours as a tender/life boat first, sailing second.

    Very late to the party here, but no charge controller? Your set-up is considered "off grid," which means it's a closed system. Without a charge controller cutting off the charge (be it a wind generator or solar array) after the batteries are brought to full, you will most certainly fry your bank. The only time you don't need a charge controller are in "grid-tied" systems, where the extra energy is bled off to the grid. Hopefully I'm not too late here.

    Thank you for putting this video together. Not many out there discussing outboards on a Pudgy. I am looking at getting an outboard for my Pudgy and wondering what shaft length you purchased for what I assume is Mercury's 5 HP that comes in shaft lengths of 15", 20", and 25"? With the transom height from the bottom of the hull (not keel) measuring 22" I am thinking I should purchase the 25". I am not looking forward to beaching or beach launching with this length of shaft though.

    • @SailingKnotShore
      @SailingKnotShore 5 місяців тому

      Yup, it has to be a long shaft. Beaching is not any different than any other shaft length, done it several times now.

    In today’s world an electric outboard makes a whole lot more sense, especially on a dinghy that won’t plane. Small outboards are a PIA. Gasoline is a PIA. If you leave gas in the motor it will gunk up over time and then it won’t like to run. We switched to electric a couple years ago. Will never go back!

    • @MrJeffDemme
      @MrJeffDemme 4 місяці тому

      You are absolutely correct. I have a Pudgy and have been using a 55lb thrust trolling motor and a 12 volt Lifepo4 battery. It works, slow but adequate and reasonable range. We just upgraded to a Newport 86lb thrust motor ($299) and a Repower Flow 24 volt Lifepo4 100Ahr battery in a nice box with a charger ($540). That is the nicest battery in a waterproof box that I have seen. It is heavy at 50lbs. It pushes my 30lb dog and 195lb me at a solid 4+ knots. It runs about 3 knots on the lowest speed. If anything, I wish the low speed was a bit less aggressive. Maybe a 70lb thrust would be better. It looks like the same speed as the 5hp gas burner so hull speed is the problem. I love not having gasoline onboard and I can charge from the motherships electrical system. Yesterday I ran 4.7nm at various speeds, quite a bit on max and still had 71% battery charge when returning home. This cost less than a gas outboard. Requires no maintenance. And it is easy to store. Way less than half the price of the 3hp electric outboards and better range.

      I have been using a 55lb Minnkota with a Kipawa propeller for years. The propeller gives me maybe 15% more top end speed and really chews through weeds. I don't own a Portland yet, I've been using my Minnkota on a 15" canoe.
