As a former Yankees fan for 23 years, I miss watching the Oakland Athletics they're VERY nostalgic I'll never forget the American League Division Series in 2001 that was HELLA wild when Derek Jeter did that flip play.

That opening with Ernie Harwell was wonderful. I wish baseball was still promoted with sentiment instead of trying to be "relevant" with modern audiences.

34:27 First pitch [T1] 48:12 Vin: "He (Dodgers pitcher John Tudor) is the rarest of left-handers that I've seen. He will rarely, if ever, throw a curveball or a breaking ball to a right-hand batter." Joe: "Not one that you can hit anyway." [B1] 51:33 Tudor throws high fastball to Canseco and appears to hurt himself. Walks around the mound before re-engaging. Surprised a Dodger trainer didn't come out. [B1] 52:22 Finally, head trainer Bill Buhler and pitching coach Ron Perranoski visit the mound. Tudor stays in and gets Canseco to fly out to LF. [B1] 56:40 Joe and Vin discuss the quirks of Oakland Coliseum. Keep in mind that when Vin mentions the Raiders, they were actually playing in LA at the time. [T2] 58:03 Vin quotes Dodgers DH Mike Davis, who came over from the A's in the offseason. When asked about his favorite moment in Oakland Coliseum, Davis mentions a catch he had against the Angels' Gary Pettis-himself one of the great fielding CFs of this generation. [T2] 59:20 Joe: "I know one catcher who says he could hit any pitcher he caught. I wish I could've said that." [T2] 1:04:07 Welch strikes out Alfredo Griffin with Scioscia on 2nd (single) and Hamilton on 1B (walk). Crisis averted, inning over. [T2] 1:05:26 The infamous Mike Dukakis tank ad [btwn T2 & B2] 1:08:09 Tudor strikes out McGwire on a check swing then walks off the mound toward the clubhouse like he just got the third out. He stops at the foul line where he fights himself for a bit, but Buhler eventually gets him. Tudor-who we later find out hurt his left elbow-is replaced by Tim Leary. [B2] 1:14:39 Vin: "It's a difference for Scioscia to handle Tudor for four hitters, then suddenly get Leary." Joe: "You could catch Tudor with a Kleenex. With this guy you better have a pretty good glove." [B2] 1:25:11 Hubbard hits a laser beam off the LF wall, but Hatcher plays the carom perfectly and holds him to a single. Nice hit, better defense. [B3] 1:27:07 Hubbard steals 2B, Scioscia double-clutches the throw because no one's covering the bag, then bounces it into CF, Hubbard moves to 3B [B3] 1:29:51 Hassey singles thru the 5.5 hole, Hubbard scores, A's lead 1-0. This is Oakland's first run since Canseco's GS in 2nd inning of Game 1. [B3] 1:31:26 Leary balks, Hassey moves to 2B [B3] 1:32:49 Griffin with an amazing rundown of Weiss' pop foul down 3B line in a crowd of Dodgers. Hassey holds at 2B and Vin quotes The Music Man. [B3]

This is a very underrated World Series. Five out of the six games were one-run affairs. And a ton of great players. Atlanta had 5 HOF’s (Maddux, Glavjne, Smoltz, Chipper, McGriff) and Cleveland nearly played .700 ball in ‘95.

It’s gonna be so weird, amazing awesome and fascinating to see both the athletics and rays c play in minor league stadiums. I don’t know why, but I am fascinated by this. And also, I can’t wait for MLB to show 25. Next year. Something tells me a lot of home runs are gonna happen. I’m so ready for the new stadiums and moves right now let’s do this. Also. I’m gonna call it right now. Don’t boil me if I’m wrong. Athletics dynasty the next three years. And rays athletics World Series. 2025.

I know the game's a dud-at least for non-Dodger fans-but this is one of Vin Scully's greatest performances. From the jump, he's engaged, funny, and totally in his bag. And Joe Garagiola is right there with him. 1:10 Kirk Gibson being compared to Roy Hobbs [pregame] 28:59 First pitch 32:06 They cut to the CF camera that Canseco hit in Game 1 and there's a massive dent in it-which Jose signed. Pretty cool [T1] 33:29 McCauley Culkin in a Dr Pepper ad, a year before Uncle Buck, and two years before Home Alone [btwn 1 & 2] 36:41 Vin and Joe give Eckersley his flowers for being standup about Gibby's HR [B1] 39:03 Vin relays a funny quote from Larry Bowa talkin shit about Storm Davis, who worked together in San Diego [B1] 39:50 Hatcher blasts a liner off Carney Lansford's glove at 3B and into LF. He and McGwire share a laugh and then Scully notes Mickey's appeal. "The thing about Hatcher, the crowd identifies with him because he is Everyman. He's awkward, there's nothing beautiful about his game, and everyone relates to him, which is why he's such a crowd favorite." [B1] 43:24 Garagiola with a great line about Mike Marshall. Talking about him being streaky, Joe says, "When he's hot, he's one of those guys when you got two strikes on him, *you're* in the hole." Remember this quote for the 3rd inning. [B1] 47:24 After walking Parker, Hershiser gets McGwire to hit into a DP [T2] 52:45 Camera cuts to Gibby and the graphic says, "Kirk Gibson. 3 home runs in last 5 World Series at bats." In Game 5 of the 84 series against SD, Gibson hit a HR in the 1st inning and of course the dagger 3-run blast in the 8th against Goose Gossage which sealed the deal. [B2] 54:44 Walt Weiss with an amazing throw from deep in the 5.5 hole to get Hamilton [B2] 1:00:00 Vin essentially says Hershiser's scoreless streak is the greatest extended pitching performance he'd ever seen [T3] 1:00:44 Vin follows that up with a great line about Hershiser's upcoming contract. "Orel will have a new contract to negotiate this year and the feeling in Los Angeles is he will probably get all the land west of the Mississippi." [T3] 1:02:19 Joe notes that "when Hershiser went 2-1 to Weiss, that was the first time today he (threw) two consecutive balls." [T3] 1:02:26 Hershiser walks off mound for some reason and Scioscia goes out to talk to him. Possible injury? [T3] 1:06:17 Vin on a roll today. "I was just thinking, they haven't been talking about legs in this town since Brooke Shields arrived." [B3] 1:08:52 Hershiser fakes a bunt and swings away, what Casey Stengel, as Joe notes, used to call "the old butcher boy." Two pitches later, he singles up the middle doing just that. [B3] 1:11:47 After discussing how good Sax is at going to RF, Sax hits it to RF, and Hershiser takes 3B when Canseco falls asleep in the outfield [B3] 1:13:03 Stubbs singles to RF, Hershiser scores, Sax goes to 3B, Dodgers lead 1-0 [B3] 1:15:30 Hatcher hits a chopper up the middle just out of reach of Weiss and Hubbard, Sax scores, Stubbs takes 3B while jumping over Weiss, Hatchers advances to 2B, Dodgers lead 2-0 [B3] 1:17:47 Marshall hits HR to LF on 0-2 count, Stubbs and Hatcher score, Dodgers lead 5-0 [B3] 1:18:59 Joe with another good line: "Marshall is in that category that some guys hit the ball where it's pitched. He hits it *if* it's pitched." Vin then notes that it was in the 90s in LA that day, so the ball is carrying further than it normally would, especially for October [B3] 1:25:57 With Canseco wielding a 36-36 bat, Vin and Joe have a fun exchange about some of the heaviest bats in baseball history. [T4] 1:30:04 Following up the big bat convo, NBC cuts to the A's bat boy shaving Canseco's bat handle in the dugout. Vin quotes 19th century poet George Pope Morris because of course he does. "Woodman, woodman, spare that tree." A couple of the A's are having fun with the bat boy by tossing sunflower seeds and then a black towel at him. Good stuff. [B4] 1:30:33 Hamilton looks like he's gonna get a leadoff single up the middle, but again Weiss makes a sweet play going to his left and throwing to 1B against his body, nailing JH by a step [B4] 1:34:39 After failing to get two sac bunts down, Hershiser pokes a double down the RF line on a hit and run with Alfredo Griffin (infield single) who scores from 1B. Canseco's throw goes over McGwire's head and there's no Jeter to make a flip toss to home plate. Dodgers lead 6-0 [B4] 1:41:12 Vin with a funny stat about new A's pitcher, Gene Nelson. "He was put in as a pinch runner against Toronto and stole a base ... the first pitcher in the American League to steal a base since the designated hitter was introduced (in 73)." [B4] 1:42:00 As an old school, "do it the right way" kinda player-and later hitting coach-it's disappointing to see Hatcher put the ball in play and never leave the batters box [B4] 1:45:52 Joe quoting Bob Gibson: "I'll give you the middle of the plate, but I want the inside and outside corner." [T5] 1:48:04 Astonishing play by SS Alfredo Griffin, who backhands McGwire's chopper in the 5.5 hole, throws across his body to get Parker at 2B, then Sax relays it to Stubbs for Mac's 2nd DP of the night [T5] 1:52:54 After Vin says that Dodger Stadium opened in 1962, Joe notes that RF umpire Doug Harvey's first day as an MLB umpire was on that day, where he manned 3B. Vin follows up by saying that A's first base coach Rene Lachemann was also there that day as a ball boy. [B5] 1:53:23 Marshall hits a triple to LF just past a diving Parker-again on an 0-2 count. If you saw Cobra play earlier in his career he either catches that ball or throws out Marshall on a laser beam throw to 3B. This throw isn't very good and poorly played by Hubbard, who probably should've cut it off, so Marshall slides under Lansford's late tag at 3B. Dodgers catch a break when the fans try, but fail to get the ball at the LF wall. Had they touched it, it would've been an automatic ground rule double instead of a triple. [B5] 1:55:06 Camera shows Parker in LF and Vin says, "Dave Parker, after that dive, had to go back and replace several divots. The entire fairway, in fact." [B5] 1:56:36 Parker catches Hamilton's flyball at the left-centerfield wall [B5] 1:57:54 Mac Tonight from McDonalds. Lord help us all [btwn 5 & 6] 2:00:41 Vin and Joe have a hilarious exchange about Luis Polonia's short pants, with Scully quoting Ring Lardner. "Shut up!" he explained." [T6] 2:01:55 As Vin is calling Polonia a first ball hitter, Polonia pops out to Griffin on the first pitch. In fact, Hershisher gets out of the 7th on only 5 pitches. A's playing right into his hands. [T6] 2:06:28 Hershiser doubles to LF, his third hit of the night. To this point, the A's only have two hits. [B6] 2:16:05 Hendu grounds to Sax who forces Lansford at 2B (reached E6), but just beats out throw to Woodson at 1B (replaced Stubbs) [T7] 2:17:09 Vin and Joe can't figure out why the A's keep swinging at early pitches instead of making Hershiser work on a warm evening in which he's done a lot of baserunning [T7] 2:18:32 Parker singles to CF and Vin notes, "Going to 2B is Henderson and take a good look at him. He is the first member of the A's to reach second base tonight." Cobra has all 3 A's hits tonight. [T6] 2:23:33 Magic Johnson in the seats [B7] 2:27:47 Vin and Joe discuss the fear pitchers must feel facing Canseco. Vin: "Remember that line drive home run? Supposing that ball had been hit right back at the pitcher?" Joe: "You would've had just a pair of shoes there. Nothing else." [B7] 2:27:58 Vin: "The most terrifying looking hitter I have ever seen ..." Joe: "I know who you're gonna say." Vin: "... is Frank Howard." Joe: "Yeah, no question about it." Vin: "But I tell you what, Canseco will do." [B7] 2:37:30 Weiss grounds to Woodson at 1B, who forces Hubbard at 2B (he walked), and just beats Griffin's throw back to Woodson [T8] 2:39:32 NBC's graphic says, "Don Baylor: First player to appear in 3 straight world series with 3 different teams (Boston 86, Minnesota 87, Oakland 88)," just as Vin notes Baylor's most noteworthy achievement. "Baylor has been hit 267 times in his career." [T8] 2:40:58 NBC's graphic notes, "Orel Hershiser has allowed 3 earned runs in last 91 innings." Insane. Vin says, "I'd almost look for a pitch in the dirt," to which Joe replies, "I would, too. See if he could chase it, or at least to the outside part of the plate." Baylor then chases a perfectly located curveball on the outside part of the plate. Half-swing strikeout, inning over. [T8] 2:57:15 With two outs in the 9th and a 1-0 count on Parker, NBC shows a graphic: "Orel Hershiser: 101 pitches." Joe: "That really tells you a lot about the command that he's had. 100 pitches and he's one out away from a complete game shutout victory." Vin: "And normally you'd see maybe 130 pitches." [T9] 2:57:38 Vin: "He has done what he has done so well all year. Throwing strikes, throwing groundballs, and he's faced only four batters over the minimum tonight." [T9] 2:57:52 After Hershiser gets Parker to swing and look a fool on a nasty curveball, Vin gets off a classic, with "ever" in full-on, OG Brooklynese: "Boy, did he evah break off a deuce on that one!" [T9] 2:58:19 Vin: "And now the chant ... Orel ... Orel ...1-2." [T9] 2:58:46 Vin: "One ball, two strikes ... GOT 'EM!" [T9] 2:59:28 As he walks off the field Hershiser looks up at the Dodger Stadium crowd and cheers them back 2:59:46 Vin: "Orel Hershiser: The first pitcher to throw shutouts in the League Championship Series *and* the World Series on a game that saw his mother and father throw out the first ball."

35:41 First pitch 40:07 Belcher hits Canseco, moving Lansford (who walked) over to 2B [T1] 48:24 Steinbach flies out to CF, leaving the bases loaded [T1] 51:24 Stewart plonks Sax with his first pitch and umpire Doug Harvey gives Dave a warning [B1] 56:58 Mickey Hatcher hits HR to left-center, Sax scores, Dodgers lead 2-0 [B1] 1:01:09 McDonalds' weird Mac Tonight homage to Mack the Knife. Nightmare fuel [btwn 1 & 2] 1:12:18 Belcher throws behind Lansford's head (!) and receives warning from Harvey [T2] 1:17:20 Canseco jacks 3-run laser beam HR off the camera in CF. Impressive. Glenn Hubbard (singled), Stewart (walked), and Lansford (walked) score, but Lasorda leaves in Belcher. A's lead 4-2 [T2] 1:37:26 With Steinbach on 2B and Hubbard on 1B (both singled), Weiss has a chance to at least move the runners over. He flies out to short LF, runners hold [T3] 1:39:47 Instead of having Stewart immediately bunt over the runners, LaRussa lets him swing through strike 1, bunt foul for strike 2, and then it's a check swing strikeout. Another missed opportunity. [T3] 1:44:17 Vin Scully discusses Gibson missing the game, noting that he was officially listed as "day to day." Vin waits a beat then says, "Problem with the World Series, there ain't many days." Joe agrees then utters a statement that would end up being prophetic, though not for the reasons he intended, "You talk about a short series, it can get short in a hurry." [B3] 1:49:29 Camera cuts to Gibson and Vin quotes John Milton, “They also serve who only stand and wait,” a line from Milton's poem, "When I Consider How My Light Is Spent." Classic Scully. [B3] 1:55:34 After leading off with a ground rule double into the RF corner, Hendu gets himself thrown out on Canseco's hit in the 5.5 hole. Nice play by Griffin and Sax, but another A's misfire. [T4] 1:57:14 Parker hits a swinging bunt towards 1B, Leary reaches the ball and throws it into RF, runners on 2B and 3B. EXCEPT, Harvey calls Parker out for running inside the basepath-which proved correct on replay. A's killing themselves [T4] 2:01:33 Canseco steals 2B, but in doing so, takes the bat out of McGwire's hands. Mac is intentionally walked to get to Steinbach, and he strikes out. Just a bunch of missed opportunities for Oakland. [T4] 2:11:00 Fernando (who was injured for the series) and Lasorda joke in the dugout over a foul ball. Fun to see. [B4] 2:31:03 Scully talks about Canseco and steroids and Garagiola says how unfair the talk is. Oh Joe. [T6] 2:37:38 Mike Scioscia singles to LF, scoring Marshall and sending Shelby to 2B (both of whom singled). A's still lead 4-3 [B6] 2:41:09 Hamilton has chance to tie the game, but instead hits into DP [B6] 3:04:22 Scully discusses Alejandro Peña's nickname, "Slow," when Garagiola says, "I love (Dodger pitching coach Ron) Perranoski's line. He says, 'He even stands slow.'" 3:10:37 The infamous moment when Scully brings up Gibson, positing that if a fan with binoculars were in the ballpark and scanned the Dodger dugout to see if Kirk Gibson was there, “the answer would appear to be no.” Of course, Gibby was in the training room getting worked on. When he heard Vin's spiel he spat out the glass he'd been chewing on to dull the pain, and screamed, "This is bullshit! Get me my uniform and cape!" 3:14:02 Canseco misjudges Shelby's liner to RF, but makes a shoestring catch to end inning [B8] 3:18:30 Canseco refuting Thomas Boswell's Washington Post report that he's taking steroids [T9] 3:20:25 Massive Canseco swing (and miss) causes Scully and especially Garagiola to swoon like they just saw Sinatra [T9] 3:28:51 First shot of Gibby in the dugout [B9] 3:31:57 After getting ahead 0-1, Eckersley throws 4 straight balls and walks Mike Davis, pinch-hitting for Alfredo Griffin. This is followed by Gibby walking out of the dugout to a rousting ovation from the Dodger Stadium crowd. [B9] 3:33:12 Broadcast shows graphic: "Dennis Eckersley has not allowed a home run since August 24th." [B9] 3:35:57 Catcher Ron Hassey *almost* backpicks Davis at 1B. Underrated play. [B9] 3:37:36 Davis steals 2B as Eck misses low and outside to send the count to 3-2. In fact, his jump was so good that Gibby's interference at home plate is waved off. [B9] 3:38:45 Gibby hits "high fly ball into right field ... she is GONE!" Davis scores from first, Dodgers win 5-4. For over a minute, Scully doesn't say anything. He simply lets the roar of the Dodger Stadium crowd tell the story. That's why he's the GOAT. [B9] 3:39:59 Vin: "In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!"

3:08 Chuck Mangione does national anthem and then waits for King of the Hill to call 11:15 First pitch 11:26 Lopes grounds out to Nettles, the 3B's first appearance of the series [T1] 39:46 Garvey with a nice dig at 1B on long bounce throw by Cey [B2] 41:23 Camera shows Dorothy Hamill and then after a few beats Cosell asks Palmer, "You still seeing her?" Awkward silence. Epic live TV moment. [B2] 44:35 Game delayed due to power failure [T3] 49:32 Power restored, first pitch of inning [T3] 50:35 Nettles with a nice dig at 3B, throws out Lopes [T3] 51:59 Russell gets thrown out at 2B on failed hit and run w/Garvey. Nice play by Randolph. [T3] 1:00:46 Randolph hits HR to LF [B3] 1:15:36 Yeager scores Dusty on single through 5.5 hole [T4] 1:21:48 Nettles doubles to RF [B4] 1:35:14 Randolph boots Cey grounder, Lopes scores from 2B, Dodgers lead 2-1 [T5] 1:36:01 Palmer notes that "most of the bad things that happen to the Yankees happen when George Frazier's on the mound," which is promptly followed by a Dusty Baker bloop single into CF just past Willie Randolph and which moves Cey to 3B [T5] 1:37:23 Guerrero triples into deep left-center just past Jerry Mumphrey, Cey and Baker score, Dodgers lead 4-1 [T5] 1:43:56 Randolph doubles off wall in LF [B5] 2:02:49 Russell pokes single through 5.5 hole, scoring Hooton (who walked), terrible throw from Winfield, Dodgers lead 5-1 [T6] 2:10:57 Thomas hits grounder to Nettles, who steps on third, and *almost* throws him out at 1B. Helluva play by GN, but Lopes scores, Dodgers lead 6-1 [T6] 2:12:13 Dusty hits grounder that eats up Nettles, who can't throw him out at 1B, Garvey to 3B, Thomas to 2B [T6] 2:14:12 Guerrero doubles to left-center, scoring Garvey and Thomas and sending Dusty to 3B, Dodgers lead 8-1 [T6] 2:21:56 Nettles singles to center-right and then is taken out of the game [B6] 2:34:52 Steve Howe replaces Burt Hooton (who walked the bases loaded) and Piniella hits single up the middle, scoring Rodríguez (who replaced Nettles). However, Cerone doesn't come home despite big turn at 3B and CF Landreaux conceding the run. Bases remain loaded, Dodgers lead 8-2 [B6] 2:36:58 Randolph lines out to RF, but Cerone doesn't dare run on Guerrero, who throws a one-bounce strike to Yeager [B6] 2:37:28 Camera cuts to Piniella at 1B, who audibly says, "Worst fucking baserunning I've ever seen in my fucking life!" Priceless. 2:38:50 Mumphrey also lines out to Guerrero, Yanks leave the bases loaded [B6] 2:52:01 Howe strikes out Reggie and gets booed [B7] 2:56:57 As Keith Jackson, Cosell, and Palmer discuss series MVP-Cey is their consensus-Guerrero hits a HR to LF. Jackson immediately quips, "Will there be some call for a second ballot here?" Dodgers lead 9-2 [T8] 3:01:58 Rodriguez hits a deep shot to right-center and Guerrero makes a nice backhanded catch on the run with Landreaux bearing down on him from CF. Helluva play by Pedro, to which Cosell says, "I CHANGE MY VOTE!" [B8] 3:06:17 Dave LaRoche throws an eephus pitch so high to Yeager, it disappears from view. It also bounces two feet in front of home plate. [T9] 3:10:30 LaRoche throws another eephus, this time to Lopes, who swings through it to end the inning [T9] 3:15:57 Winfield pops out to Guerrero, mercifully ending his series at 1 for 22 [B9] 3:20:40 Reggie hits a grounder to Lopes, who boots it, and Reggie outruns the throw to 1B. Lopes briefly heads to locker room to wash out his eye, saying dirt flew in it. [B9] 3:23:58 Watson flies out to Landreaux in left-center, Dodgers win game 9-2 and World Series 4 games to 2 [B9]

God, Tim McCarver was horrible from the very beginning of his toxic career, but at the time I was just so happy that Howard Cosell was gone from baseball. HC single-handily nearly ruined the 1979 World Series for me, and caused me to hate the name Eddie Stanky, a man who never did me harm.
