Episode 19 - Tips for Riding Safe
Some tips on riding safe from a new rider. These are just things I think about and try to apply. I'm no expert, so by no means consider these tips absolute. I'm always open to suggestions and welcome adult discussions/comments about how to be a safer rider, so feel free to leave one.

    I’ve two regular motorbikes at 650-1000cc and have had Vespa PX125 and 200 in the past. I just bought a 300 GTS (I’m in Ireland). I decided to run it in around Northern Spain and Southern France on a mini-tour. OMG it’s like a magic carpet compared to a bike, and when you hit a town you can park it up anywhere. Hop on and off. I had around 58 litres of soft luggage on the rear rack, I didn't realise you could get bar end weights, but I didn't notice any wobble at speed. I will keep my eye on this. I have driven in the US, but I’ve just learned from you that freeway and highway aren't the same thing 😁 Thanks for the content.

      Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the videos. That mini-tour sounds like so much fun!! Ireland is definitely on my list of countries to visit (as well as France and Spain). Yeah, we consider freeways multi-lane highways (usually 70mph+ limit), and highways are usually two lanes (55mph limit). Being on anything at max speed is a little frightening in my opinion. GTS 300 on a freeway... that's a no for me. On a highway it's fine. One the flip side I wouldn't even take a Vespa Sprint/Primavera 150cc on a highway because they max out at 60mph. That's the biggest reason I went with the GTS.

    • @riotofmyown
      @riotofmyown 12 днів тому

      @@TheFranticNomad In Ireland we have motorways at 75 mph limit, I will use them sometimes for short distances. In France/Spain I avoided the 80 mph roads but did short bursts on their 75 mph ‘highways’! I like cruising at around 60/65. My bikes are gonna see a lot less action...

    I just bought a 50cc for my family to ride. I must say, I enjoy riding it more than my other faster bikes. I’m very impressed how the 50cc handles to people on the scooter very well. Just to clarify to those who may not know, reason I got a 50cc was because sure where I live all you need is a car driving license, so figured it as great introduction fir the family to riding. I am eyeing a 300cc Vespa in the future.

      @@TheFranticNomad Hi there! Of course, although I'll have to get back to you on that. I live in Switzerland, Geneva - and with similar cost considerations in mind - didn't want to pay the extra customs because we are outside of the EU. So because Geneva is so close to France, I ordered it to a friend just across the border, but as I got my vespa in the meantime, I've just been so distracted enjoying riding that that I haven't managed to pick it up! Also had loads of work going on at the moment. I had planned to pick it up tomorrow though, and will get back to you for sure! Regarding the cost, I used a code by a different youtuber called OZETT, and using that code gave me around 10% off! So in total I payed 260 EURO, with free shipping. I totally get the costs concerns going up, with import duties to the US and such.. Will make sure to share my experiences to help you make a decision! I also recently installed the Cardo Talkpack Edge on my helmet, and seeing the unit stick out on the side have a slight worry my shoei glamster helmet may be too wide. Lot's of things to try out still!

I'd never take off my orange stripes... It's my favorite part esthetically hahaha. Also, bar end mirrors were my favorite addition. Makes the biggest difference in clarity of seeing what is going on behind me. I've have mine on the interstate and agree with your assessment that it's not best for 70+ for long periods of time. Good stuff nomad🍻

    Dear Sir, Many thanks for uploading your video - I've really enjoyed watching it. I too am seriously considering purchasing a Vespa 300 GTS. I'm just wondering, though - you said that you've reached a speed of 70mph, and that the engine had a little more poke left in it (albeit not much). In your honest opinion, do you feel that the 300 GTS would comfortably hold that speed- 70mph - on a motorway/freeway, for an extended period of time, without at all seeming as though it was under great strain? The reason I ask is that IF I go ahead with the purchase, I would very much like to take my new machine over to France, and do some solo touring - and that will entail spending several hours a day on French highways at 70-odd m.p.h. Your insightful opinion, based on ownership experience, would be greatly appreciated. Once again, many thanks for your time and effort. Warmest regards, Neil (England).

    • @TheFranticNomad
      @TheFranticNomad 23 дні тому

      So a couple things… 1. If buying new you’ll have a 620 mile break in period and a first service before you can do any sustained speeds and you shouldn’t go that fast before then. 2. My opinion is that the Vespa could go faster than 80 but I think Piaggio limits that. I personally wouldn’t ride 70 for any sustained periods unless I had to. IMO 70 is interstate speeds and I don’t think it’s really meant for that for long periods of time. If you want to do that I would suggest a 400cc or higher scooter. Being near top speed around other traffic would make me nervous and is less safe imo.

      Sorry to hear that. I guess YMMV. That has not been my experience. Maybe they’ve improved things along the way or I’m just comparing my experience with a helmet that was already pretty noisy. I know my K6 has a noticeable whistle sound depending on wind direction.

  • @Bob-_-Smith
    @Bob-_-Smith 29 днів тому

    I’ve just bought one identical to yours, and I absolutely love it, only been out 4 times and done nearly 600 miles. But I would like to know if that screen on your bike has made a difference with the airflow ? Also every time I fill it with petrol I spill it down the side of the bike so I’m gonna look at buying one of those gadgets.

    • @TheFranticNomad
      @TheFranticNomad 29 днів тому

      Awesome. Glad you’re enjoying it. You’re just about to the 1st service after break-in. Just looked today and I’m at about 2000 miles. The windscreen for my height does push some of the wind to my helmet a bit but keeps it off my chest which I prefer. It’s a much smoother ride at higher speeds. My K6 helmet has a lot more wind noise than my new 6D so now I like it even more.

      It definitely does! I do have a chin curtain on my AGV helmet but it’s not quite as tight fitting. Possible this is where the whistling sound is coming from but I’ve not been able to pinpoint it exactly. May take a ride without it and see if that’s the cause, although I’m doubtful. I’m wondering if maybe it’s caused by the visor itself. Air definitely comes in from somewhere. Vents open/closed doesn’t seem to make much of a difference.

Went to check some out and was a little intimidated as they were a little bigger and heavier than i thought they'd be but haven't actually ridden one yet. Everyone including yourself talks about how easy to ride and stable they are. When I see those old Vietnamese dudes flying around on them I think "surely it can't be that hard". Doing a course is a good thing.

    • @TheFranticNomad
      @TheFranticNomad Місяць тому

      I’ve only ever ridden one motorcycle as of late and that was an older Honda Rebel. Although low to the ground the weight distribution still did not feel as low/balanced as a Vespa GTS. I imagine a Primavera is similar just not as heavy. I’m about 5’11”, 240lbs and although it’s in the ~350lb mark it’s pretty easy to move around even when not on it/running. When I first saw one in person I thought it was way bigger than I thought it would be. I was surprised as well. Find a dealership near you and go sit/test ride one is all I can say. If you’re a new rider or a person that’s not ridden in awhile I would definitely recommend a riding course.

    I am not particularly a fan of matte paint, but I had no choice. I have a '23 Super Tech which only comes with matte paint. But I have not had an issue with bugs marring the finish. And we have bugs here in South Texas. I do clean them off after a ride. Maybe that makes a difference?

      I imagine if you clean it right away it’s probably less of a problem, and I do clean my scooter quite often but can’t always do it after every ride. I also skipped the super tech model for the paint selection. I’m quite happy with the orange. Fun color for a fun scooter.

  • @AltitudeRider
    @AltitudeRider Місяць тому

    Can you mix video from the GoPro and the Osmo together? I have a GoPro 10, but am seriously considering the Osmo/DJI setup for my rides. I still want to use the GoPro for a selfie cam setup and use the Osmo for my main helmet cam. Was curious why you didn’t have a camera mounted on your mirror for this ride. Thanks!

    • @TheFranticNomad
      @TheFranticNomad Місяць тому

      I can mix the two together, splicing up the clips as needed. It’s only a limitation of the editing software. On a couple videos I did an overlay when I was able to sync the footage correctly. If you have two Osmo cameras you can import clips in Davinci Resolve by an internal camera timestamp (not the time recorded) so they are in sync (the GoPro doesnt have that option), otherwise you have to use the clap technique or attempt to align clips using the audio signals. Since the Osmo sound comes from the wireless mic and the GoPro sound is coming from the camera (which when mirror mounted is just wind noise), it’s been a pain in the butt to get it all in sync during editing. The headache has not been worth it so I’ve just been leaving it off the bike. It does add a nice change to the flow so I may attempt it again before replacing it or maybe mount it on the side of the bike for a rear view or another type of view.

    You watch the same Vespa channels I do. The Orange Rider scares the hell out of me with his lane splitting. Flatgrind has a great detailed vid on how to do the 600 mile service yourself. Robot on Scooterwest knows everything about all Vespas and they have hundreds of vids and a lot of products. Scooter in the Sticks is very zen for me. There's a channel by a guy called 'Bug.' who I think is in Portland - he's pretty funny. I have a '22 300GTS in 'Arancio Impulsivo', I got it because orange is the most visible color and above all else, I want to be seen. I love it. Here's a hint - riding down the center of the lane is generally ok, (just keep your eyes open) but when you come to a stop light or sign, pull to the right or left cause vehicles' fluid drippings are concentrated in the center there. I've been riding various bikes since '87. Scooterwest has a vid by Robot and product called an aftermarket tone wheel - I got it and it makes the speedometer accurate - I've tested it many ways and times. and you get a true 80 mph from the Wasp with it. Was about $25. Have fun - shiny side up. Y did you pick a cooter instead of a motorcycle? good luck with the job situation. Was a programmer for over 20 years.

    • @TheFranticNomad
      @TheFranticNomad 2 місяці тому

      I've been more cognizant as of late on not staying in the center lane, especially at stop lights so I have an out if someone comes up on me from behind. I pick the side with the most available space. I appreciate the hint. I went with a scooter to start as I've always wanted one and right now I just wanted something that would get me around town and maybe a tiny bit more. I'm still not sure about riding at 70-80 mph on an interstate with a motorcycle, which would really be the only reason for me to get one in addition to a scooter. I never say never though. This summer I would like to test ride a few for fun, especially the Honda SCL500. I really like the look of that bike and imo you can't go wrong with Honda's reliability. 500-650cc would be all I ever need. That being said I would however own one of these electric bikes if money was no object. They look great, the tech on them is nuts and the name also fits :)... damon.com.
