    Solution of the swing equation using the fourth order Runge-Kutta Method According to the book of Stevenson (Electrical Power Systems) The swing equation is: (2H/wn) w’=pm-pe In this case w is the relative speed of the rotor of the generator, that is: w=speed of the rotor minus synchronic speed of the generator If the generator is running at synchronic speed, then w=0 rad/sec I solved for w’ and I got: w’=(wn/2H)(pm-pe) In this case wn is the angular frequency of the electrical network, that is wn=2πfe where fe=50 Hertz in Norway. I substituted wn=2πfe in the swing equation and I got: w’=(2πfe /2H)(pm-pe) w’=(πfe/H)(pm-pe) I changed the variables using δ’=w and δ’’=w’ and I got δ’’= (πfe/H)(pm-pe) The electrical power of the generator is pe=ksin δ where k is: k=Eq’Eth/(xd’+xth) Eq’=internal voltage of the generator xd’=transient reactance of the generator Eth=Voltage of Thevenin seen from the terminals of the generator xth=Reactance of Thevenin seen from the terminals of the generator I assumed that R=0 that is lossless impedance. I substituted pe=ksin δ and I got: δ’’=(πfe/H)(pm-ksinδ) The above equation is a non-linear second order differential equation In order to solve the above equation I formed a system of differential equations: δ’=w w’= (πfe/H)(pm- ksinδ) The system of differential equations can be represented like this: δ’=f(t,δ,w) w’=g(t,δ,w) Since the swing equation is non-linear I used a numerical method to solve it. I used the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. This method is used to find the approximate values of the rotor angle δ and rotor speed w for a given value of t (time).
