    How can I find a technical writer job for a cybersecurity company when I don't know much about cybersecurity? I have been researching cybersecurity and AI a lot, but my previous positions don't hold that title. I am a strong technical writer with lots of experience, but companies will not hire me unless my resume says "cybersecurity" on it.

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV Місяць тому

      If you have experience writing technical documentation (e.g., user guides, whitepapers, etc) then having "cybersecurity" on your resume shouldn't make any difference. Cybersecurity isn't one thing - it has a ton of areas. And AI has been around for decades. Generative AI is what everyone is excited about these days, but that's also been in use for at least a decade. Are you getting interviews and no job offers? If yes, that's an issue with your job interview skills and not your resume. If you're not getting any job interviews: These days, if you are applying through LinkedIn, Indeed, etc then the more likely issue is the company has over 1,000 people that applied for the same job. Google search specific areas of cybersecurity and look at the company websites to see if they have openings. Look for jobs that don't say technical writer, but where some of your skills could be applied. For example, this is a technical marketing job at Cloud Flare. You could learn the basics of the technical info they are looking for in the JD and show how you would write a single technical marketing document for them and submit that with your application. boards.greenhouse.io/cloudflare/jobs/5976278?gh_jid=5976278 Look at cybersecurity conference website sponsor lists (Black hat USA, RSA, individual vendor conferences like plunk and Pax8, AWS and other cloud provider conferences, etc). Look at the lower level sponsor companies and look at their websites for jobs. If they don't have anything listed as open, see if you can find contact info. Create one sample document for their company and send it to them with a message about how you'd like to help out. That might lead to W2 but also might lead to 1099 work. It's important to think outside of the box. Everyone and their mother is searching for "technical writer jobs" on social media and Google search, so you need to figure out how you can either apply your skills to a different role or find the places they are not searching.

      Search for open jobs, even if they are asking for experience. That will help you identify what specific skills/tools employers in your geographic area are looking for. Then, if you don't have those skills you can find free training for them. You don't need certifications or college degrees. Focus on free stuff first and get the job first, then let companies pay for everything else for you.

      Truth. Most of the “open” jobs you see on job boards and social media are what we call “phantom” or “ghost” jobs. Can you transition from a technical writer to GRC?

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV 3 місяці тому

      Yes. It depends on the company you work for. Many people start as a technical writer just to get a cybersecurity company on their resume and to network within the company to get different jobs. I’ve known people in the past that started as technical writers and then the company created analyst and engineer roles for them. The same can happen with GRC roles. If you currently work in technical writing, then I suggest finding open roles at cybersecurity companies. After you get hired and show them you are a high performing team member, it becomes much easier to transition into the job you want.

      They’re going to train you on what they need you to do. If you already know some of their tech stack then you could train on that. I would probably just work on your AD and Azure AD skills and maybe explore some Sailpoint and Okta free content. It really depends on what they are using though. I don’t think they’ll have you touching AD much as an intern because of the risk but you never know. Good luck with your internship.

      Compensation always depends on the company, location, experience, etc. Overall, much of the cybersecurity jobs are paying about 20% less than they did a few years ago, but here in the U.S. you can usually negotiate for other stuff like tuition assistance or more days off. If you're just looking at cybersecurity careers for the money, then I would recommend just focusing on sales jobs. People with experience in sales that work at larger cybersecurity companies are often making $250k-$400k.

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV 3 місяці тому

      I don't know any companies that hire entry level PM off the top of my head, but look at the company sponsor lists for the larger cybersecurity conferences (like Black Hat USA or RSA). And look specifically at the smaller startups. Some of them will have project management roles open and they are usually more willing to work with more entry level people. Something to keep in mind on project management is that ALL of us have project management skills from life. Focus on transferable skills for your resume and LinkedIn. You can probably find low cost project management training over on Udemy and Google might also have a certificate program for project management. I can't remember if that's one of the ones they offer.

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV 3 місяці тому

      Not sure I fully understand your question, but here’s my suggestion for resume sections from top to bottom. 1) Contact information and maybe a link to your LinkedIn profile 2) summary section - 1-3 sentences about your background related to the job you are applying for 3) skills section (optional) - with 3-5 bulleted skills max so it’s easy to read 4) experience section 5) education/certs section 6) anything else (optional) - could be interesting projects you did related to the job you want, could be volunteer work, etc The only purpose of the resume is to get a job interview. It’s not used to tell your life story. Think of the resume like a sales page for a website. Your job is to make the resume interesting enough so that they “buy” you for an interview.

      I have a video where I review someone's resume. The format of a good resume is pretty standard. The only difference between job roles is focusing on specifics of what they ask for in the job description and how your background makes you the best fit for the job. Here's the link to the video I mentioned. ua-cam.com/video/J2e-tMWdXvI/v-deo.html

    • @CyberLifeTV

      Do you mean just talking about vendors (like an MSSP) and talking about their value for organizations, so someone entry level would understand how the puzzle pieces fit together?

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV 4 місяці тому

      It depends on the company. If it’s a bigger company then they usually can offer offshore work. It also depends on SLAs. Some clients can’t allow non-US citizens to access certain things.

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV 4 місяці тому

      Not sure exactly what you mean. Are you asking how to find projects you can show a potential employer? If yes, then just google search a cybersecurity audit case study or use chatgpt to give you an example scenario and then analyze it so you can talk about it in an interview. If instead you are asking where to find contract work then look at companies in your local area, especially small businesses, to see if they need some cybersecurity related help.

    Is it a good idea to put skills section with bullet points under summary? Does it really make any sense for recruiters?

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV 5 місяців тому

      Yes, the top 1/3 of your resume should be thought of similar to a website page that is trying to sell you something. You want to capture attention and get them to "buy." In this case, the "buy" is them reading more of your resume and contacting you for an interview. Your summary section should only be 1 or 2 sentences. Most people have summaries that are way too long. I recommend having a "main" resume that has everything on it, then create a copy of that resume that you edit for each job application. For the skills section, there should be 3-5 skills listed that are relevant for the job you are applying to. That's why it's important to have a main resume, so you can just cut out what skills don't fit for the job you are applying and you don't have to rebuild your resume every time you apply for a job.

       @CyberLifeTV Thank you for your response. I have one more question regarding my experience. I am trying to transition from development to cybersecurity. For sure, I don't have real experience in the cybersecurity area, but I am spending a lot of time on self-learning, practical tasks, etc. Can I put a "career break" (or something similar) as experience in my resume and list my accomplishments under it? I would be happy to read your suggestions for this situation.

    • @CyberLifeTV
      @CyberLifeTV 5 місяців тому

      @@SamirHajiyev yes. I would suggest listing any gaps in your experience as “Sabbatical” and then you can list what you learned during that time.
